Password protect "Clear Save" function?

Not only that, there are voice attack scripts which click automatically. A confirmation would be nice. Or a checkbox. Or something. Anything. FDev pls.

This right here....I see no reason that what could be game ending click not be fully protected from that. It should be a real hassle to delete your CMDR. There should be no way to accidentally do that by any means. As a comparison, would a dev allow a single click to be able to wipe out all their hard work? Not a chance they would allow that to happen. And while we are talking about such things, You should have an in game way to backup our keybinds as well. Ya, I copy them manually elsewhere but that should be an in game thing.

The password could be displayed in the bottom (where you could change it), so you would not run the risk to forget it, it's just so that you would need to deliberately punch it in the required field to deliberately open the "clear save" option.

Now that's an epic security fail. First - if you forget it, you can recover it via e-mail. Second: if you're forgetful, get a password manager. Third - get a password manager anyway, because breaches happen often...

It doesn't matter how many layers, tick boxes, confirmations or passwords they put in front of it, someone will still manage to "accidentally" clear their save.

Then complain that it was too easy to do so...

But there is difference,

If they made it more cumbersome to clear your save, to make it harder to do it accetally, and you still managed to do it by "mistake", fewer people would agree that it was a bad design tat caused this and more be that this is a user error, as there where several steps that had to be completed to clear the save.

Compared to clear save option that does not offer any are you sure options, or allow deletion by pressing the same button over and over, then more would support the bad design stance and be supportive towards the user.

This is such an old repeated request and so simple to set up, the fact we don't have anything different still means it won't ever happen. And I laugh at the idea that adding a password prompt would be too much, this is pretty standard throughout the industry...and how often does one use this function on purpose to have that become tedious? Hats off if you start from scratch every week, Ironman mode to the fullest.

This feature is especially important for those of us that sometimes on occasion like to drink a ton while playing and sometimes have no clue what we're doing [big grin]...

Well at the moment, you have to:

Click on options

Then go right to the bottom of that menu to highlight the option to clear your save

It gives you a warning message where "No" is highlighted as default. You have to physically move the highlighted option to "Yes".

And only then does it actually delete your save.

Even now you have to make a conscious effort to get that far...

yes, and I do still think that there have been shown that accidental scripting can wipe your save. and also jerk friends can do it for you, just for giggles.

So replacing that prompt with enter your password prompt would improve on this.

So neither of these scenarios have you shown any resolution for. So there is no perfect solution, but there solutions that are better or worse at this. and the currently system is better than no confirmation at all, but this system can still be triggered by accidental activation of scripts... and it can any number of factors that triggered the script, like a pet, something got knocked over etc.

Yep'. Do what ESO does for character deletion. Require you to type "DELETE" before enabling the enter key to complete the transaction.

Maybe even the button click causes an email to be sent that needs to be activated within ten minutes.

That smells of at least two different systems involved, perhaps even three... In other words, expensive idea. A text input like Un1k0rn wrote, or password input. Is that simple.

While I understand some CMDR's out there want this deletion functionality, it's something that I'm sure a lot of us playing Elite Dangerous have a tough time sitting with. Many of us put a large amount of time and effort into our profiles and would never dream of deleting that progress.

Would it be possible to have a more secure deletion process to ensure players don't accidentally delete their profile/progress?
(Not asking to get rid of it, just asking for a more intentional step rather than a confirmation message and a button which can easily be overlooked or clicked through accidentally...[noob])

Possible Solutions:
• Confirm deletion by repeating a term or phrase such as "DELETE PROFILE" in all caps.
• Confirm deletion with password.
• At very least provide a toggle to hide that functionality. (Would advise to do the above rather than this so users don't forget that they shut it off.)
• Take option out of the menus and have the deletion process through website. (Add short statement in game about how to delete profile on the site.)

Totally open to other options, just listing a few off the top of my head.

Thank you!

Great idea, +1 rep!
