Hardware & Technical RAM prices- unbelievable

What is with RAM prices? I haven't bought in a few years, but holy hell the prices have what more than doubled, even for DDR3!

2x 8gb DDR4 price makes me want to grab the manufacturers by their throats.

I have to build a new rig, and I'm getting sticker shock from RAM, (what used to be one of the reasonably priced components).

I have money, but that doesn't mean I want to throw it away.

Memory prices have actually fallen quite a bit from their peaks in this last six months, but are still well above their lows.

All the big memory manufacturers were hit with a anti-collusion lawsuits recently because they had been artificially limiting supply and fixing prices to not compete with each other and raise profits.

Most of you kids don't realize how very cheap RAM has become in the last several years. 25 years ago RAM cost around $1000.00 USD per megabyte.

I bought 4x 256MB SIPPs in c.1992 and I don't remember them being anywhere near that expensive.

I do remember being offered a 1GB HDD for c.£300 in the very early 90s.

Not quite that bad in my case, but on my first computer (a Mac LC) I upgraded the memory from 4MB -> 6MB for £220 (Irish), so about €280 euros maybe. It's freakishly cheaper now.

Tried to find a long term price chart of RAM, still looking, but found some examples of price increases:

[h=3]Price History[/h]The simplest way for us to start comparing prices was to look at our own Newegg purchase history. GN staff members have bought multiple memory kits over the past few years, and almost all of them have increased in price since.

That happens every two or three years, hasn't stopped them so far. The Chinese are getting wise though, that may lead to some more unfortunate repercussions the next time 'round.

Yup. Bought 16GB of RAM when I built my Skylake system for $130 CAD. Few years later, I really needed some more for VM stuff, and shelled out a whopping $250 for the exact same RAM.

Ever heard of Moore's Law?

Tbh, ram prices have come down a lot in the last 6 months. They're still nowhere near reasonable but when you consider I forked out £550 for 32gb this time last year, the same kit can now be had for £344, prices are at least heading in the right direction.

Ah yes, that would explain it nicely. Luckily i built my current system yonks ago, but i noticed when i added an extra 8GB (of same type) a few years back it seemed to have doubled in price.
