I'm An Idiot: Ruined My Exploration

I'm currently in Colonia and i've just made a really stupid mistake. Without doing enough research i thought i could make my DBX jump further by taking a massive detor on DW II and grab a better FSD. I had a 5B, EDSM suggested i could get 5A but when i eventually got there late last night i found that not to be true. Disheartened, i thought i'd swap my entire ship for a Krait Phantom and kit that out instead; except in my slight daze I hit sell instead of store...

I then found out that not only could i not get the Krait even close to the 30LY jump range my DBX had, the best FSD available for the DBX is actually only 5C here and so i'm worse off than i started.

I now don't know what to do. I can't see how i can make the rest of the trip with that sort of range, i was struggling to put in the time as it was to keep on track

Worse off than you started can happen, it's definitely happened to me before now.
Might not be total catastrophy though, you can still explore even with a small cut in range?

Engineer the DBX 5C FSD? There are Engineers based in Colonia I believe.

edit: even 'travel', honk without scanning which should help you keep up with other wagons if time limited.

An 5A FSD is indeed not available near Colonia, but you should be able to buy a 5B in Dervish Platform and Whirling Station in Ogmar, and The Brig in Luchtaine. Then remote engineer it - which you of course made ready before you left the Bubble - and take it to Mel Brandon to add Mass Manager experimental effect. Alternatively do the complete engineering with Mel Brandon, but as far as I can see his FSD is only at level 2 (soon 3).

Is it still an option to jump in a sidey and self destruct and take the freebie sidey in your starting system in the bubble?
If you have the funds and mats, you can engineer up a longer jump range ship like a phantom, without too much ado.

It isn't *that* far yet in the grand scheme of things. I only just left conflux myself due to being AFK and will probably mostly catch up tomorrow

Except i haven't unlocked any engineers...

Oh.... Forget my suggestion then. I know the asp could do 34ly pre engineers, not sure where the phantom would be. Either way, you're better off not losing the distance and getting the 5B from ogmar instead.

This would be the best option. Sell data in Colonia and self destruct a Sidey and re-spawn in the bubble.

You should have enough credits from stage 1 of your trip to kit out a DBX now. As far as I can remember you don't need to unlock Farseer?, and even a level 3 roll with her will give you a nice jump range increase on a DBX. After that head straight for the galactic core, we'll be there in a couple of weeks, so you'll be able to meet back up with the expedition then. There's no need for you to redo Stage 1 again.

Well, that’s unfortunate - and no Guardian FSD Booster either I can see from your previous jump range.
The best you can do is probably the DBX with a stock 5B FSD and then D-rate everything else except the Power Plant which should be A-rated - and you can buy a 3A Power Plant in Ogmar.

Either that or self destruct to the Bubble.

Don't self-destruct to the Bubble because you'll quit the journey for sure after losing all that progress. DBX with the best FSD drive you can get is the best option.

yep; i've managed to get close to the previous jump range by visting various other stations which have the odd one or 2 bits better than i could get at Colonia. Its probably close enough, might just need to get some help with jumpionium when the time comes, thanks all :)

If you have made a genuine mistake (the old sell/store mistake) then could be worth contacting FD to see if they would restore the ship.

That sell/store thing really bugs me how easy it is to do. Worse when you have engineered a ship to death.

Good luck CMDR

I don't suppose you have a suitable A-rated FSD in your module storage that you can transfer over, or a ship with a similar A-rated FSD (more expensive to transfer)?

Wow.

Snaps to you not only going to Colonia without an A grade FSD, but also not engineered?

My DBX does 60ly a jump, but I had to learn which modules to ditch, which to keep in the sweetspot 5D, and go to Synuefe NL-N C23-4 B3 to get the Guardian module for Guardian FSD.

You're actually quite awesome, if that helps at all.....

As far as I can remember you don't need to unlock Farseer?
Iirc,Farseer requires 1T meta-alloy ,which itself requires a side trip to the only station in the universe that sells them.I can't imagine how hard engineers must be for those who don't access 3rd party sites such as this to gain that information, but at least Martuk points you in the right direction.
Edit: Glad to hear youv'e figured out a way to carry on,O.P.,and good luck with the rest of your journey.

Only heard about DW II a few days before it started. Didn't have much funds and DBX with a 5B was the best i could afford anyway. Never knew about engineering until this trip, nor had i ever looked into mining. It's been a real eye opener as to how much there is in ED, learnt so much in the last few weeks

It's a lot better in 3.3, since you can find all you need to know about meta-alloys in game (without excessive persistence or luck)

1) Military and High-Tech economies import meta-alloys, so you can read that they're found at Barnacles there. Alternatively, the Codex Knowledge Base entry Thargoids->Structures will give the same information.
2) The Codex then has 3 Discovery entries for Barnacles, which confirms that they create meta-alloys, and gives three systems they can be found in.
3) A bit of work with the DSS to find an appropriate surface site, and an SRV, and you've got yourself a meta-alloy.

Martuuk is still the better FSD engineer to unlock, since they give access to better subsequent engineers (Farseer is the only "starter" engineer not to give access to a Colonia engineer)

@ Hepatic -

I am assuming you have been exploring on your way out to Colonia? If you haven't already - sell off a bunch at Universal Cartographics the next time in station - that will fatten your account...But at the very least - if you decide to take the 'Sidewinder Express' back to the bubble - make sure you sell every bit of exploration data - else it's gone forever...(If you unlock an Engineer near Colonia - you might be able to sell exploration data to them to unlock higher grade engineering too)

I have to say that I have spent quite some time grinding through the basic / mid level Engineers - and it's really worth it for exploring to get the long-range FSD unlocked - as well as the Guardian FSD booster...Also unlocking lightweight Sensors and Life Support will get you a significant boost...I've got my well equipped Anaconda doing nearly 70 ly hops standard - and @ 270 with Neutron star boosts...you can move around very nicely...I am a DW2 latecomer - but already left WP4 - going to swing by Colonia myself - and get some base ships transferred from my base station - then I'll be able to use Colonia as an exploration base mostly...

See you in the Dark o7

Dan

Engineers-wise, it might be wise to unlock Mel Brandon before heading back to the bubble, so you have an engineer unlocked out in Colonia who can upgrade your modules and stick experimentals on them if needed.
You should have high enough rank with the Colonia council if you've been selling your exploration data at their ports along the DW2 route. They should have a data delivery mission at Jaques to get an invitation to him, and then he only requires 100k in bounty vouchers, which I got at the nav beacon in his system from only two kills, after sticking a few class 2 multi cannons on my fully exploration-engineered T9 (Truly the most extreme combat anti-optimisation you can imagine), so it should be doable in something cheap and easy to pick up.
