10 for the Creator

Apparently David runs a Q&A live chat / forum thingy every other month or so, and thus it was an error assuming fdevs weren't posting on the forum. One just has to dig deep enough.

Also the video Q&A was not something people wanted, so the "open letter" was both in error and unpopular with the die-hards.

Original post:

Frontier and / or David Braben,
would you kindly consider some form of communication with the community?

I have noticed you do not seem to fancy using the frontier forums as a way to communicate with the ED backers, so would you instead feel more comfortable posting video recordings akin to the old dev diaries?

Every now and then we get a newsletter and possible a notice about a new forum moderator having been assigned. But that's the extent of communication I see from you guys.

Members on the forum have claimed [speculated] that some of your employees read the forums, but since you've obviously decided not to respond to questions using that channel, my hope is that it's just the medium you're having issues with and not the notion of communicating with your sponsors.

Would you consider posting a video say once a week, every two weeks or even once a month, just so we know you are alive and to make us feel there is some sort of bidirectional channel for conveying questions and getting a chance at having them answered by the only people who really have them?

Your friend Chris over at CI (RSI "or whatever") has this thing he's doing called "10 for the chairman". It's basically him replying to ten questions his team has picked out during the week from the community forum they're using. It's a great way for people to get all sorts of answers, while minimizing the time Chris needs to spend on community work. I really hope David or someone else at Frontier would consider something like that.

If money is seen as a constraint for this, just let us know how many "custom paint jobs" would be required for you to offer this service, and I'm sure we can find a way to compensate you for your time on this matter.

Forum does not have "dev tracker" kind of thing, but for example good place for tracking Devs posts is this topic http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=12048&highlight=tracker (some info is old) Some are quite active in forums, and provide good info.

DB has made several Q&A sessions here recently, and i would not be surprised if they would schedule another some time soon. Look at the Updates forum for them (i think).

Honestly i don't want Frontier to make features like "10 for Chairman". For SC, while it is sometimes good source for info, 95% time it is IMO pointless questions.

Lol.... Wow.

Am I mistaken in this observation Crispy?
If so, mind pointing out where I can find FDev and Braben posts and that discussion is taking place?

Edit: Kris, thanks a bunch for that.
Didn't know they had no way to flag employees on this board.
I'll take a look at great source you listed, to see what if any recent discussions have been had with the team developing this product.

I got trust in DB when he has actually spoken and trust he is intending to release a playable game within a year and that is what really matters.

To OP

you are of course entitled to your opinion, but I do not think it is entirely fair.
This has nothing to do with fanboiism, but pure observation:

The are numerous ocasions in various threads that involves a reply or a clarification from the FD development team, please search the forums , and you shall find.
W recieve a weekly letter that summeraizes pretty fair what is going on in terms og game developments and in terms of for ann example ingame economy. Often these also carry some video message.

I would judgestimate that this is what there is time for now, with Gammas and Betas approaching, we do know about a planned release in rather short timespan of 4 months.
Having more than 110 000 players playing Beta I do think FD know what is expected of them.
I would also delve in any "news " I could find, but I find it unreasonable to expect more.
In all respect.

Cheers Cmdr's

Frontier employees do read the forum. That's not speculation.

Edit: Ninjaed by Kris. :)

Yeah the questions on that 10 for the chairman can be very left of field sometimes. Often they are ones which allow a vague answer about the possibilities of doing a certain thing in the unspecified future I've noticed.

here you go, proof that FD staff read the forums regularly:

http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=40123

as for update frequency i'd rather FD staff got on with making the game rather than spending all their time on the forums, sure they could answer every little question and keep us updated every step of the way but then when would they find time to work on the game?

You don't really want an answer to that do you?

Don't understand what you mean.

They have their own forum image (Frontier logo), and position (Designer, Programmer etc etc) on profiles. There are exceptions. Very easy to spot.

Indeed...it's clearly obvious for anyone stalking their user profiles on a daily basis...

...ehhhh...not that I'm doing that or anything...really, I promise...

There was an amazing Q&A at Lavecon that was broadcast by the Lave Radio guys, between community members and part of the dev team.

Team members have interacted with the community for the entire time I've been following the game, on the forums and in the 'meet the team' posts.

Michael Brookes pops onto threads to answer points and clarify stuff all the time, brilliant stuff for a lead designer.

David Braben has done a ton of interviews and Q&As with the community and game websites.

Maybe they don't need to do cheesy videos every week because they don't need to keep everyone hyped for the next 3 years in lieu of an actual game.

Or maybe the Elite audience, like me, are completely turned off by the kind of incessant, inane drivel that OP is suggesting.

Or just maybe there are more important things to do in the last phase of development than dragging your team members in front of a green screen to answer questions from disillusioned Chris Roberts fans.

wut. I'd take the info we get each week and the patch notes we get with the updates over everything the SC devs communicate every week. Infact the information I have seen communicated from them has only made me believe even more that they are wasting the money on, and this is just a small example, making the adverts, and dont even get me started on the problems that two or three departments have to go over again and again because it wasn't worked out properly during design... I.. got a bit offtopic. sorry.

tldr I'm happy with the way it is :)

Alright guys, I see that once again I had failed to find the buried nugget of info. I had just never run across a post with the FDev logos, so I concede in believe the rest of you guys are happy with the way dialog with fdevs is being made.

Ignore this thread, as I realize I'm clearly in a minority here in not having read every post in each category and thread.

I'll cull the initial post, hoping that makes you all happy and that it will allow you to find other noobies to vent on ;)

PS. To Kris, thanks again for providing great references.

Dear Frontier,
You only ever communicate with me through a weekly email containing the written word, screenshots and video.

Please will you consider doing a monthly update using the medium of interpretative dance.

Yours sincerely
