After the not-so-shocking revelations made in the Battletech thread, I've decided I should give such gameplay a go.

But, where to begin?

Well, I just recently discovered The Elder Scrolls Legends.

It's no secret how much I adore Tamriel, so I've decided I'm going to try the game, as I'm very familiar with the lore. It's free so trying it out is harmless. :)

Does anyone here play the game? I'm going to install within the coming days.

What does Battletech have in common with TES Legends? I thought it was a card game.

My distaste for turn-based gameplay is literally in the turns. I don't particularly enjoy chess either.

EDIT: I hope to familiarise myself with turn-based gameplay by "starting" with a setting I enjoy. The important part is I try playing a game that isn't based on live actions.

Chess: Best game ever made in my view.

As to turn based games, you can look at the Baldurs Gate series and the Icewind Dale series. Great games.

I have no doubt in the quality of chess.

Alas I grew up without ever really playing board/table/card games. It's stunted my ability to enjoy them as an adult.

A bit of application can still change that though.

Honestly if that's your goal, I'd start with XCOM Enemy Unknown.
It's an awesome game on its own and can ease you in into tactical turn based combat really well. It's dirty cheap and even highly moddable, if you want (as most of us, TES fans do)

I don't know. I kinda feel this whole TES: Legends thing is just a cheap spin-off. I'd pass.
I agree with statement above, XCOM rebooted series have been quite good. While EU was great, I much prefer XCOM2 due to greatly ramped up difficulty. But if the genre isn't your thing I understand why it would be a rough start.
Also, you can get a taste of both RTS and TBS in certain games. Total War series has turn based global map gameplay, and real-time tactical battles using massive armies...I myself loving Rome 2 right now.
And if you just prefer RPGs I couldn't recommend anything better than Divinity Original Sin 1/2. Those games are known for having exceptionally fun combat with lots of depth. And it's way more dynamic than most other turn based games I've played. With multitude of possible synergies between different characters, environmental interactions, etc.

Divinity is another thing I'm isolated from. All the games I've played were 1st/3rd person.

With exception of Tales of Vesperia.

The Kings Bounty series on steam was a pretty great turn based game in a high fantasy setting. Might be a good place to cut your teeth.

Ah, completely forgot about that one. Yea, it's great. Really really gave me those HoMM3 vibes. Nostalgia...
Darn it. Now I want to play HoMM3 :D

I encountered kings bounty on the sega genesis when I was little, renting it at one of those mom and pop movie rental stores. I could never find the game in a normal store to buy. Probably rented it 100's of times over the course of years. I loved it. But I digress.

Turn based games are fantastic as they give you a space to think on your own time without being rushed, very relaxing and meditative. I think the trick is just finding one in a setting that interests you and pulls you in.

I'm not a big fan of mobile games but I recently downloaded Guild of Dungeneering for the phone. Its fantastic and I've been playing many hours relaxing in bed before sleep enjoying it. A good half way point me thinks.

I remember the original King's Bounty. Played it on some very old DOS machine in school nobody wanted to use. Because it was so old :) One man's garbage is another man's treasure indeed.
