Next Update = 2020

Those of us stating the game was in maintenance mode have been ultimately proven right. FDev have provided close to nothing on the pretence of a year of "free updates". Updates that were already thin but became even thinner after failing to deliver on the promise of fleet carriers and improved planet terrain. The only reason 2018 was free was because FDev knew it was so minor they couldn't sell it.

They now admit that they took a sabbatical they knew they could get away with, propped up by fan boys with multiple accounts going over paint jobs and ship kits, while they diverted the majority of workers onto Jurassic Evolution.

The fact that they have nothing waiting in the wings for 2019 is a huge admission. Remember the line "over 100 people working on Elite", what a joke and a talking point...

I eagerly await what FDev decide to be enough of a buggy minimum viable product to stick a price tag on for 2020.

I think that's maybe a little harsh. I believe it's been more about Braben's desperate desire for rapid business growth. They want more franchises as opposed to focussing on deepening one product. I don't think it's unreasonable to suggest there's a real risk there'll be hardly anyone left playing the game by the time the next update is released. 5 years between content additions is a lot for any game to retain players, never mind one fraught with instability and bugs like ED. I'm not convinced they've called this right for some time. People won't wait forever.

In fairness we're not waiting for a competent loot shooter here,we're expecting a fully realized simulation of the milky way.
If i'm going to back a horse in this race it's going to be FD.
Late 2020 would coincide with the rumored release of the PS5.

The procedural generation of the milky way is done mate. It's just an algorithm that reiterates. They aren't hand-crafting planets.

But feel free to back FDev. Different strokes for different folks.

<spoiler>The "New Era" won't be space legs OR atmospheric landing. Everyone hang on to your butts!</spoiler>

Um? Gas giants,water worlds,earth likes,lava worlds?!
There's an awfull lot missing and it's the most challenging technically. That's without considering the possibility of leaving our ships.
It's a huge challenge and if FD are actually aiming this high i applaud their ambition.

Just how much do you expect fleet carriers to do?! They're landing platforms that can be parked different places. Doesn't seem terribly major to me.

What makes you think they are aiming high at any of that? They didn't say they were doing anything at all, as far as I can tell. Just, you know, wait 18 months for the next announcement about what might be coming next.

ED = 2014 > Horizons = 2015 > Beyond = 2018 > Nxt = 2020. Why is anyone surprised at the logical progression of an established pattern?

Oh, wait... what?

They've had FIVE YEARS to make these mechanics. Years. And we got RNG grind and a 2D mobile game scanner.

Do you really think they plan to start these mechanics now? Really?

It's over. I'm sorry. Really. I wanted to be wrong.

But I'm not. Its over.

They've hinted that they've understood that CGs are getting a bit stale. So with fleet carriers, we'll all get our own personal community goals.

Grind Blaze your squadron's trail through the stars by purchasing a carrier license for 10 billion credits, then delivering 100,000 tonnes of hydrogen fuel and 25,000 space gromits picked one at a time from the tangerine space cucumber farms of Gallumbits IX, just to jump a maximum of 100 light years.

I mean, imagine how expensive impressive the bobble head for a fleet carrier will be.

Wow, that is a bit of a delay.

My only issue is they called the FSS ‘ambitious’. That brought a chuckle.

Also space legs confirmed (what else would need that long). Yes!!!

In the mean time looking forward to the other new franchises frontier will be releasing :) Putting in a disclaimer that all the updates for the next year and a half will be tiny feels just a little bit like ‘no longer a priority’ :(
