General / Off-Topic I don't get smart watches, do you?

As the thread title says, I don't get it.

It's not that difficult to get your phone out of your pocket or your bag, is it? So why need a watch to do the same thing, but in a cut down version?

It looks like the manufacturers are thinking up ways to increase turnover by inventing new gadgets.

Is anyone else interested in them? If so, would you mind sharing your reasons?

The new apple watch looks really quite nice! I'd love to have one!

Unfortunately - it requires having a newer iphone too, which means there is basically nothing in the watch apart from a battery, a screen, a Bluetooth transceiver and a touch digitiser.

Not really worth it for the money.

However, if you didn't need an iphone to use the thing - it'd be really quite neat. I remember the days of calculator/radio watches - and having to stuff three feet of aerial wire up your shirt sleeve :D

Haven't worn a normal watch for years because my phone replaced the one thing it did... now they want me to wear a watch and carry a phone?! :p

I hate Apple (not the hardware itself, but the playpen OS and the reverence shown by a large portion of the public) but in this case I don't really get all the other smart watches either, as long as they require you to carry a phone... perhaps I'm just too old! :D

That is the entire point of commerce. Look up Planned Obsolescence sometime. The economy only works because it keeps grinding, we've hit an artificial level of grinding that has to keep grinding or the wheels fall off. It's not going to change until people make up and stop consuming mindlessly.

Until they come up with the Tracy watch where you can actually make calls on them I can't see the benefit of them.

Personally I think you can't beat a real watch and I must confess to being a bit of a tart when it comes to watches.

Do you know I thought the same thing when the iPad came out. However, this is written on an iPad.

From what I've seen, the iWatch just looks too fiddly. I can't see a use for it, but maybe others can. No skin off my nose.

I can see it could be useful, what it's going to come down to in the end is probably cost. Right now it does seem a little bit indulgent - after all you do have your iPhone for looking at Messages and Calendar, but having said that I can see it being quite handy just being able to glance at my watch instead of take my iPhone out my pocket or bag. I'm sure that in time they could become one of those things we take for granted in much the same way that I was a bit sceptical about iPhones when they were first released. But only if it's a sensible price.

As tech progresses I can see them becoming useful.

But until the become a self contained unit and not tied to your phone i personally won't be clamouring for one.

And as I said there's nothing quite like a real watch ticking gently on your wrist. (listens to the tick and sighs in muted satisfaction.)

I don't wear watches because I find them uncomfortable. Would love to have one, but I just do not get on with them.

I ditched a watch for a phone in the pocket, and at the moment I cannot see a reason to change that.

Tracy phones would be cool, but in reality I think you would look a bit of a twit talking to your wrist! :p

Yes. Despite what my post post above, I too was quick to ditch my watch due to comfort as soon as I had a mobile phone. Maybe what we need is an iPocket-watch instead?

Okay, it would defeat the point wouldn't it.

The iTick app will take care of that ;)

Sadly that will probably happen.

But my main watch is something very special to me, I have to wind it every couple of days as it's a manual wind and even though I occasional forget I still enjoy winding it. knowing all those little cogs and wheels are spinning around in perfect harmony.

I can see the attraction of TJ's mechanical watch, and that of a watch that gets rid of the need to be carrying a phone... this thing in the middle just seems to be a toy.

Haven't seen anyone with any yet (yes, they've been around a wee while, Apple did not invent them although they'll probably claim so in the future) and expect it to largely stay that way. I do suppose I'll see some Apple addicts, who must have every piece of mana-infused Appleness that comes from Cupertino, sitting in my local Starbucks with their iPhone and iPad/macbook checking their wrist conspicuously to show off their new toy though. ;)

I quite often leave the house without my phone, and only owned a watch briefly in my teens, which I rarely ever wore. Smart watches are definitely not for me. Plus, I'd feel very consciously like Penny Gadget if ever I tried to use one...

I feel naked without my watch, but like T.j's it's a nice mechanical one (mine self-winds, but still mechanical).

I don't really see a point to a smart watch, and as Patrick pointed out this one isn't very attractive, on odd oversight for Apple where most of their design decisions are very good indeed.

A solution looking for a problem?
