Should I take ax weapons/fsd booster with me when unlocking Palin?

About to head down to the pleiadis and round up sensor fragments for Palin and finally unlock g5 thrusters. I've never seen a goid myself ingame but seen plenty of videos of people fighting em. They are almost all using guardian tech and so far the fsd booster is all that I have unlocked no weapons yet. Money isn't a issue these days so I outfitted my conda with 2 large ax multis, 1 medium ax multi, 1 medium flak cannon and a large ax missle turret. Threw a field neutralizer and decon limpet controller on it too and its huge beam and 2 small pulses could take down their shields I imagine. From what I understand I'd use the missles on the hull, multis against the hearts, flak for the swarm and lasers against their shields.

Not looking to aggro any goids but figured I might as well have some weapons in case they attack me while gathering sensor fragments. Will they attack me just for having sensor fragments? Will the mere prescence of ax weapons and/or my guardian fsd booster cause them to immediately become hostile after scanning me? If so I'll ditch em and I'm guessing without more experience my best bet is to run from them for now anyways.

.... my best bet is to run...

I haven't unlocked any Guardian tech or gone bug hunting - but I find that last sentiment to be true IF you are doing engineering and unlocking an engineer its best not to get sidetracked. IF you want to go bug hunting go watch some clips and hard engineer a monster exterminator for fun - but don't mix and match in Elite (without the necessary experience and rebuy) - it can get messy.

They haven't attacked me for having sensor fragments in my materials inventory so I guess the same would apply to you.

I have the GFSDB on a few of my ships, but I don't recall ever being interdicted by the Thargoids while in one of those ships so I can't give you a straight answer on that. The same pretty much applies to the weapons you asked about as well.

Good point I'm not looking to go bug hunting just wasn't sure I'd need weapons to defend against them while gathering fragments. Palin and Lori Jameson are the last 2 I need besides the colonia engineers that im in no hurry to get. I'll be glad when I get him unlocked later he was the last useful engineer I still needed. I've seen a lot of videos and it seems pretty brutal but I got a understanding at least somewhat of how to fight the bugs. Just never seen people fighting with ax weapons in the videos I saw.

If having sensor fragments doesn't aggravate them then that's pretty much the key info I needed appreciate it. I'm still at shinrarta haven't left yet so I'm gonna sell back those ax weapons and go back to a standard loadout. My combat/explorer conda still gets close to 30ly jump range without the booster and my jumponium tanks are topped off so I'll leave the GFSDB at home just in case.

Just going to avoid them for now and run like hell if they do come after me but after reading these responses I'm not so worried now. I'll wait to fight any of em till I have a dedicated anti bug ship like lngjohnsilver1 said and some gauss cannons or something. Thanks for the advice guys

Try some of the tips here:

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/421608-Sensor-Fragments-for-Professor-Palin

I wouldn't bother with FSD booster or Thargoid stuff yet. You can get all the sensors from crashed sites or killing scavengers.

Thanks stormyuk I was just about google that to look around and see if there are any sites close to Palin so that link saves me some time. I got the fsd booster a long time ago just was wary about bringing it as I've read that having any guardian tech at all really ticks the bugs off. Palin was the last engineer I needed I'll get lori at some point if I want my fsd interdictors tricked out.

I have every other engineer in and around the bubble at g5 status, a vette, a conda and half a dozen other ships so bug extermination will be the next area I venture into. I'll be sure to get all the guardian tech and slfs before I try it though.

Edit: got people mixed up I need lori to get g3 scbs at some point I have tiana if I need my interdictors upgraded. I think bris dekker is the one that I meant to be thinking of as there seems almost no point to unlocking him.

Speed is your friend! The fastest Tharg interceptor (Basillisk) goes roughly 530ms, all the rest are roughly 450ms.
So if you can go faster whilst boosting, you should be fine.
If you get hyperdicted, immediatly boost away, then turn FA off, even if they shutdown field you, with FA off you will continue floating away even with no systems running.
Hope this helps, obviously if you don’t have enough beast under the bonnet this advice is next to useless, sorry!

Good luck CMDR o7

Good advice there thanks a lot I was gonna take my conda down there but now think I'll bring the krait mk2 instead. My krait, conda and vette have full g5 engineering on just about everything but the thrusters so they got plenty under the bonnet and I can smite any npc out there. Just don't have the guardian weapons yet so I'll take yalls advice and run like hell for now. Will bring a field neutralizer just in case to try to keep my systems up if one tries to fry me and I've gotten pretty good at fa off even in big ships.

Thanks for the help everyone I'm sitting at the Palin research center now with my shiny new g5 dirty drives :) . Went ahead and reloaded the instance a few times and got 100 fragments in case I need the extra for flak ammo or something later on.

No thargoid encounters at the site and wasn't interdicted on the way to Palin so everything went smoothly. Glad I read that link stormyuk posted I figured these were a commodity item or something and would've picked up the canisters on accident. Probably would've taken em to my ship and melted it and the srv.

All is good now last major engineer unlocked to g5 status time to start grinding for guardian blueprints. The guardian sites aren't too tough though as long as you get a ship with point defense close by. Lol I actually managed to land a conda in 2 different places at that one site high on a mountain that gives you module bps. Reading the guides people say you can't take anything bigger than a dbx to land there but I got my condas fat derriere planted and with its nose basically inside the site. Best spot was at the end of the site where it slopes up into the mountainside towards the top of the mountain. There's a T shaped structure and I just lined up parallel with the top of the T and sat down right next to it. o7 everyone

G5 DD’s utterly utterly ROCK!!

Kudos for coming back and saying thanks as well.

Happy hunting CMDR o7

If you have the credits available I suggest:
1) do the 5000 LY trip and get the invite first, before going and collecting the sensor fragments.
2) use a DBX, a much less expensive ship to blow up in if that happens, comparable jump range to the Anaconda and much more maneuverable.
3) you do not need to go all the way to the Pleiades for sensor fragments. Go to any barnacle forest that has scavengers, shoot down the scavengers from your SRV, they will often drop sensor fragments. In the past, on the ground they scanned as "unknown" fragments but changed into "sensor" fragments when transferred to ship's cargo inventory.
4) you should not need AX weapons just to travel the 5000 LY and unlock Palin. Just do not carry any Tharg-related materials (sensor fragments, carapace pieces, meta-alloys, etc.) in your inventory while on the trip. THAT is what causes flower-ships to become hostile.
5) If you have access to the GFSDB, definitely fit one and fit an AFMU, too. Make sure you have the materials on board that "fuel" the AFMU. Leave it turned off when not in use.
6) Use the neutron superhighway, the plotter is available here: https://www.spansh.co.uk/plotter. Using the neutron superhighway I was able to complete the entire 10,000 LY round-trip in a single evening. You must go 5000 LY from your point of in-game origin. You can check your distance from that point in Panel #3 in your ship's statistics but just keep going until the invite appears in your COMMS panel.

That's a very good concise guide to unlocking Palin hopefully somebody who still needs to reads this. I made my 5k LY trip by flying out to omega mining and used premium fsd injections almost the whole time to speed things up. Had my conda fitted to jump 45LY at the time and with injections I was jumping 90LY at a time and got there and back in a single night think I used 144 injections in total. That station inside a asteroid belt over at omega was pretty cool.

Make sure to pin the blueprint you'll use the most (usually Dirty Drives) while you're docked at Palin's base, so you can use Remote Engineering to apply the modification to your drives even when you're not at Palin's.

Using a GFSDB and neutron star boosting I was getting well over 200 LY per neutron boosted jump. No jumponium needed. o7

Great point I ended up taking the conda after all and got its clean drives to g5 then bought a cheap pair of 6d thrusters and used them to pin DDs. Then I can get DDs for any of my ships and just fly to farseer for the experimental effect if I don't feel like going down to maia. Went back to shinrarta and got a new set of 7A thrusters and got them to g5 DD just need to go see farseer later for the drag drives.
