Burst vs Beam vs Pulse

Whats for What?

Whats better than What?

Well my purely anecdotal findings are that, burst is marginally better than pulse, and that beam is the same as pulse provided you can track your target with 100% accuracy and dont mind the extra heat generation (i.e. beam is completely pointless).

So the best ones, at the end, are the burst lasers?

adding to that...

can we upgrade the class of hardpoints (C2 C3 C4..not the actual guns...but their holders) on a ship.. or are they static

Burst laser deal more damage to the shield than Pulse laser.

Burst laser and pulse laser deal equal damage to the Hull.

Pulse laser consume energy lower than Burst laser so you can shoot longer.

Burst Laser will deal more damage if you have a short time shooting your target. Pulse laser is good if you could keep your target in range for a longer time.

These are from my view point and experience.

Beam laser, wait for Beta 2.0

While I don't disagree, I thought it might be worth changing to say: "Pulse laser consumes less energy than Burst laser so you have to spend longer shooting."

Seems a bit pointless unless there really is another benefit (which I suspect is really just initial purchase price)

You have more chances to get a hit on target with pulse laser :p

Beam does have a point or two:

  • It's a great way to kill steal when multiple people are trying to snag a juicy, high bounty target that is hovering at 2%.
  • Gimballed Beams are a great way to essentially disable a shield with very little need to aim.

That said, I haven't tried burst lasers yet and I haven't used pulse laser enough to love or hate them. Maybe gimballed versions of those are even better than what I'm rocking now.

I do know that Beam LOOKS the best out of all of them. I just imagine I'm playing Quake with a Lightning Gun.

Pulse lasers take lower amount of energy and deliver a nice if not slightly sub par punch.

Burst lasers take more energy to fire, pack alot more punch if you manage to get the whole burst on target.

Beam is ridiculously power hungry generates alot of heat stacks nice. And as all lasers, it's damage fade is most noticeable as a linear function of distance.

But has the longest range and can be sustained for long bursts provided you have a buttload of heatsinks and a steady arm.

It's basically a surgical laser. Lol

Pulse are still the better choice imo. Burst lasers overheat too quickly and the TTK between Pulse and Burst assuming you dont have to wait on a cooldown is marginal.

Pulse = pew, pew, pew, pew, pew (mind you pew not pop)
Burst = ratatat, ratatat, ratatat

Pulse lasers are a (near) endless stream of pew pew, weak but they can be kept on target a long time. Bursts are just that, 3 shots burst fire laser hits so one shot = 3 pulse shots. When on target that hurts more but they do get hot far faster than pulse.

My playstyle works better with Burst than Pulse shots because let's be honest at anything over 1K lasers get inaccurate so I get close burst fire until I can finish off with cannons.

Beam lasers honstly I don't like as they get hot super fast and if you miss you have to wait for a fairly long cooldown. Only useful on big targets to shave off their shields and that's it.

YMMV, but power management gives burst lasers the edge, I think, as long as you remember to switch. I usually have 4 pips to engines when chasing, then 4 pips to weapons for more cooling when I'm on target. That gives a noticeably longer firing time before burst lasers shut down. The advantage of pulse lasers is you don't need to baby them so much with power (cooling), so you can keep more power to engines or shields as needed.

I'm enough of a weapons hipster that I go with beam lasers mainly for reasons of style (and boy do they look good). I also like the way they are used, and the long range (for a laser) punch.

I'm not very good, but I actually seem to do better with beams than the other lasers. You need to be careful not to burn when you aren't dead on target. I dumped them all for 2 C4 and 2 C2 cannons. (Viper)
