Yeah its true. Also with banks people get to take their money back out again. No such luck with gaming im afraid!

Buying stuff and banks are very different things. One of the reasons I find it funny when people call a video game an "investment".

I quit playing more than a year and a half ago, once 2020 expansion is out i'll start playing again (in hope for atmo landings or a bit less for legs).

I kinda understand that. But the announcements that are made are just so full of nothing except, we're announcing an announcement and it's going to be super exciting and the best thing ever and omg we can't wait ti share it with you.

For the big stuff, I understand the need for OpSec. But for the little stuff, like the 3-4 month updates between now and then, I really wish we had a lot more transparency there. It would be nice to have some concrete features and fixes to look forward to.

(And yes, people, I saw the update from Will)

Griefing npc's? Today I took a mission to murder unarmed Lakon cargo haulers, designated as infected and banned entry to any station to seek help. They shouted at comms to be carrying innocent people. Local jurisdiction had given them wanted status instead of attempting to deliver medical aid. So, there they were, outcasts in deep space, having set a distress signal as their last attempt of salvation, before obliteration by railgunfire.

Oh the topic? Happens with all games, people change. About the communication from FDev, it could have been better. Its an online game, people want to know if Frontier is serious about it, every day, and see pictures. And like all internet-people, have short fuses and this gnawing sense of doom about them. I am in no way any better in this regard.

Well, if Frontier won't provide hype, the community will make its own up - look at all the rumours that 2020 is going to be atmospheric space leg ice planet fleet carrier powerplay fixes - and then be disappointed when it turns out to be an Elite Dangerous patch instead.

Anyway, in 3.3 Frontier handily provided a "doomed?" in-game ... if you have a big enough friends list.
Mine is:
- 1/6 in the last day
- 2/5 in the last week (including the 1/6, of course)
- 1/2 in the last month
- 2/3 in the last two months
- 5/6 in the last six months
(and any older than that you start to get into questions of when I added them to the list)
That seems reasonably healthy to me, even if I do miss some of the people in the last 1/6 of the list who have probably moved on for good.

Shruglife indeed. I think thats the point. "we got your money now, adapt or leave" It would be poetic justice if the response to the paid expansion and the hype around it was shruglife.

Nah, plenty of people will get it. Even if I'm on a gaming break I'll get any ED expansion in the same way I get books by my favorite authors.

The problem is that some people just don't like the game. The other problem is that they feel the need to repeatedly tell us, despite knowing it will not change.

Yes, I've seen this in other game forums and I always find it seriously weird. There's been a lot of it in this thread and the ganking one. If I decided to stop playing ED in favour of some other game, I'd be gone from this forum. I wouldn't be hanging around saying "ED is such a rubbish game; please agree with me, you know you want to; hate it with me pleeese..."

Some deep psychology is going on. Is there such a thing as an anti-addiction, I wonder?

I think there is some gulf between this game and the talent required to write a good book. Its a personal thing of course.

Edit: and for a book analogy, how many times do you keep buying from that writer when the last book was mediocre and the one before that etc.

Misery loves company, moving on and having fun doesn't scratch that itch everyone else has to be made to dislike it as well and if that doesn't work they must be called names like "fanboi".

Mediocre books happen even to good writers, their stuff is still far better than mediocre writers best efforts. ED's way better than mediocre its the BDSSE and I'm a huge genre fan so no wonder I like it.

I still watch the Walking dead even though some of the episodes in season 8 have been total pants, as I like the series as a whole.

That is generally how video game announcements work.

And that is fine in the context of who is giving the announcements.

If Sqeenix announce a new Platinum/Yoko Taro game at E3 this year, but say we'll have more details later in the year, then that's fine because Yoko Taro makes beautiful, haunting narratively genius games combined with Platinum's tight and fluid controls. CDPR can announce announcements all they want because their games are lovingly hand-crafted to the finest details, they're well-balanced RPG's with depth of mechanics and well-written stories and characters. Capcom are knocking it out of the park recently with RE2 and DMCV. They can announce announcements all day long because you're pretty much guaranteed to get quality.

Contrast that to FD.

I think a better analogy is that the book is half-written, riddled with spelling mistakes and forces you to read the same paragraph over and over before you can proceed....

*nod* It's almost as though they want to persuade other people not to like it as well. Never understood that attitude.

Debatable. If you took away the Elite name i bet alot less people would even care. About fanbois. Even the complainers are fanbois in their way. Unwelcome ones no doubt but only the hope of change makes people complain and as FD have repeatedly stated, they are listening. They read everything...

Edit: just be careful with the word sim. :D Before somebody starts ranting about how it isnt!

Well, i was defending or as some people like to call it "white knighting" Elite and FDEV a lot over the years, i really liked exploration changes... But somehow, as much as I love the one and only true space game, i don't feel like logging in anymore. Will have a longer pause, maybe until the big expansion 2020. I will definitely be back then, until the big one happens i don't think elite can keep me entertained. I'm not angry though, i paid for the game and horizons and had a blast over the years. Will definitely pay for the big update if it looks interesting, but for now i think i sucked Elite pretty dry... Cya when i cya

Let's agree to disagree regarding the meaning of "quality update" then. As you said, it really boils down to the fact that some people think that Elite is the best game ever, and others actually don't find particularly good.

I don't think Elite is the best game ever, but it's the game I enjoy the most. The Witcher 3 is actually a better game. Deus Ex as well. Jagged Alliance 2 was awesome. Mount & Blade is one of my all time favourites. Still, I love flying space ships and there is simply no game that manages it better than Elite in my opinion.
