In practice nothing seems to have changed and I find the "suck it up or play in SOLO" response unacceptable. Why should the majority of players be scattered to isolated private groups for the benefit of a handful of anti-social griefers?

Factually incorrect.
A minority of Cmdrs play in Solo. This sub-culture includes people who want/ed a single player game and are not interested in playing with others (cooperative or otherwise), people who do not have a viable Internet connection, people who don't have a subscription (console), and of course, people put off from open by the actions of gun-totting lunatics.
A minority of Cmdrs play in PGs. This sub-culture includes people who want/ed a coop PvE game, want to play with friends, and of course, people put off from open by the actions of gun-totting lunatics.
The majority of Cmdrs play in Open. According to FDev, but you may know better.

The "git gud" response is also absurd, since no amount of skill can make a trade ship capable of surviving an highly engineered alpha-strike from one or more specialised combat ships. The idea is ridiculous. You die in seconds. You don't even have time to turn your ship, much less deploy hard-points. So that is not in any way a valid solution.

I disagree, I survive well enough in a python mashed together out of spare parts: https://s.orbis.zone/2iqa. Submit, FA-off boost & turn, boost again, hi-wake... it's not rocket science. Ok, we are flying spaceships, so it's kind of rocket science.

PS yes, the C&P needs tweaking to include more long-term conseqyences, but also needs some long-term opportunities for balance.

@OP... if you think the DG2 kill propaganda is biased, you're right, but it goes further than you realise. The senior commanders working for DG2 outright refused to include the number of DG2 ships I destroyed with my exploraminer at Omega & Sag A* in their press releases! It was in the dozens, perhaps hundreds, but nooo... that would make them look weak, so all my work went completely ignored and will no doubt be met with blanket denial.

I may or may not have received the following private message from Null:

"Commander Wargfoot,

I woke up this morning from the St. Patrick's Day celebrations with a bit of a hangover. I rolled over in bed, looked out the thick glass window of my rented room and into the inky blackness of space just in time to notice my pants floating by along with my wallet, a cat comb, and a couple of coupons for 10% off at the Bayou. My iPhone 310 beeped that I had a message over at central so I tended to that and found your amusing post.

First, let me say that I found your numbers to be more convincing than my own men's accounting of their activities. Most of these guys snort when they laugh, have bad personal hygiene, and probably wouldn't have graduated from school were it not for doting parents willing to throw down serious credits to 'supplement' their grades. Schooling isn't important, though, when it comes to murder - in fact, total self-serving thuggery is an easy sell among the ignorant. Ignore that, because even though I find most of my crew to be repulsive, I hire them for their work ethic which is crazy strong.

I can say in all honesty that I have no regrets.

I write all that to say that I'm deeply concerned about this force you're putting together.
Perhaps, like my 10th grade chemistry instructor, I can get you to change my grade with an offer of credits?
Those student loans are a bummer.

Anyways, off to retrieve my knickers,

Null"

Hey my new lord, it's only a first draft, and it's just a beginning, but what do you think? Could I pass the audition?

Of honor and infamy, of the galaxy’s heart and the tyrant’s joy
As he sent forth his base captains to pursue and destroy
The fair children of the light; Of broken dreams and perilous hope
Lost in the spaces between the stars, but gathered again
By the coming of one greater than all, the son of the wolf
Whose name flies on swift feet across the wine-dark sea of space,
Sing celestial muse! Thou alone dost know the darkness that dwells
In the hearts of men and how only wolf song can bring relief
And free us from the burden of sorrow. I thus invoke thy aid to my
Adventurous song, that with no middle flight intends to soar,
Casting aside the shadows of evil and bringing mirth and joy
Once more to the children of the Frontier!

I want to call it 'Wolf Song'.

IIRC, there are more CMDRs in Open than PG. There are also more CMDRs in Open than Solo. But if you combine Solo and PG, they have the larger percentage. So it is more accurate to say that the majority of players do not play in Open. But hey, it's statistics - make them say whatever you want :p

It has been posted before, and the deaths came from a range of reasons, including PvP, accidents, station deaths, suicides, etc. Mostly the result of carelessness.

The last I checked it was in the range of 20-30 deaths, could be a bit more, but I haven't looked recently. Like I said, I died three times in my DBX (one prior to Palleini, two after).

Welcome to ED Commander Wargfoot. Open is full pvp, no level or ship restrictions. If you are in anarchy there are no consequences at all.

FDEV came up with a fantastic Crime and Punishment system to hold players accountable that commit murder in systems with "security". It works really well.

If by works really well you mean there is seriously no meaningful consequences at all. In fact, the supercop ATR are actually used by players as a trolling tool.

I seriously doubt anyone at FDEV player an mmo ever.

As I've said in other discussions. E:D's biggest fault is its outright refusal to impose itself upon the player.

Don't worry OP, Fdev are taking Crime and Punishment VERY seriously and are looking into ways to punishing griefers.

No promises on time scale but it could be soon(TM)

As with all things they will put it into the beta and then ignore feedback from qualified players but listen to the larger upset masses, when the testing ends.

Look forward to changes in 2021.

It's going to be very exciting

And then griefers and gankers will learn to circumvent/live with it, and the players who were relying on it to save them will whine and cry because it has negatively affected them.

Its very naive to think that C&P have anything with how likely people are going to fly in open, they dont, not because they got killed without reason, but because game is no longer easy for them, if in game reason to kill somebody would have any effect on solo/PG proportions then we would not see huge allergy for open only power play and not see abuse of PG/solo in MEANINGFUL PP objectives like we have right now. Bad C&P is just an excuse.

Same goes for the explorer/trader arguments against proper outfitting and engineering.

It's not that they can't build ships for survival, it's that if they do then it gives them no excuse for just being lazy and bad at the game.

Okay, at this point in the discussion I've two major disappointments:

1: I've only gotten one poem out of the deal. A good poem, but only one of them so far.
2: The thread is devolving into another PvE vs. PvP thread. That is probably good, since we've never covered that before.
3: So far I'm the only person who has tagged this thread. That hurts the most.

Anyways, never mind me.

lol - you made a thread about punishing murder-hobos. Of course there will be discussions about PvE/PvP.

This doesn't help.
At this point I assume you're an agent, working for Null, sent to destroy our efforts to organize!
