Steam Removing "Off Topic" Review Scores

Steam "reviews" are utterly worthless as a way of finding out if a game is any good or not anyway, so it's no great loss.

I don't know about you, the general review scores did help me staying away from bad MMOs at least.

I'd rather sift through the dross to find the reviews where people have put in some effort and try and discern how much of what is written is perference and how much is objective and through that determine if i will like a game.

In general if the game has Very Negative score it does ring a bell for me to do some more reaserch on it but lately Steam reviews are getting more and more trollish than ever.
Especially with lots of people that doesn't know a thing how to maintain their PC properly and than blame the game for technical issues aka "Game does not work, period".
I use to pay more attention to Steam reviews, not that much anymore now.

It's probably helped you to stay away from some decent ones too...

I do tend to ignore most of the reviews (especially the ones on the Min / max end of the scale). I mean you look at some that gave literally thousands of hours in game then go on to say "this game is dog egg..." Nobody spends thousands of hours torturing themselves in a game that they do not like. I also pay no heed to those that have played very little, these tend to be the people whom haven't actually read the games description, or requirements, then they are bitter because they have cocked up (and it's obviously the games fault).

I have found enjoyment in games that have had bad reviews, I've found less in some that have decent reviews. It's all a matter of opinion and when it comes to enjoying a game only my opinion matters to me. Other people's reviews are always to be taken with a handful of salt and for research only.

Not really, it's just that the poorly written reviews outnumber the good ones so it's a hassle finding a well written review amongst all the garbage.

Yeah, mixed or lower gives me a warning, then I check the reviews themselves, that actually bother to use.. sentences. But usually it is a mtx ridden skinner's box that gets scalding scores on there.

Metro Exodus went EpicStore-exclusive, fans didn't like that, so they left negative Steam reviews of the prior Metro titles in the series.
So what? It's pretty pointless to buy an incomplete series on a digital store, if you don't own these games already.

It would also advise people against buying Mass Effect 1 and 2 on Steam, because it's incomplete, and would suggest to get the completely trilogy on Origin instead.

Why aren't publishers consequential and pull their whole catalog from Steam?

Games are continuously on sale and get updated. So later reviews are just as valid as early ones.

I put hundreds of hours into early Minecraft alphas and betas and still give the current version a thumbs down, because the current content sucks.

Anybody who buys it now, gets to experience the current version and that is what is relevant for current purchasers. Not the fun I had with a derpy alpha, when the concept was still new.

It's is also completely valid to downvote old games still on sale, which where the hype of their days, but didn't stand the test of time. Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines has a dedicated nostalgia fanbase. But it's pure abandonware, completely broken on modern computers and not worth playing content-wise. And especially not worth the 20 bucks they still ask for it. Reviews have to reflect that. On Steam they don't.

If someone leaves negative review after playing lets say 400h - it always makes me think that "wow he played a lot, he must know what he is talking about". Therefore I most likely will pay attention to those reviews.

also, if more than one well reasoned review mentions a problem area then it's pretty certain that it's an actual issue and not some troll review bombing (whatever the hell that is (actually I know, but I wish I didn't, darn millenials)).

Fallout 4. It is at the same time a huge brilliant game and an awful pile of buggy rubbish. It fails at being a fallout game and the DLC regimen is exploitative and a rip off. Playing that game, wondering the wasteland gives you a list of things you dont like about it and its along long list. It deserves a bad review, from a certain point of view, and yet if you add mods it would be easy to rack up 1000 hours and still be annoyed at its failings. Besthesda cant take credit for those mods, infact they deserve another bad review for trying to monetize the mod scene. Will steam delete that bad review?

They arnt reviews anymore, just another form of advertising.

All Negative Nigels need rehabilitating into Positive Percies - this would have been Moses' 11th commandment if he had a bigger iPad at the time.

It put a lot of hours into No Man's Sky NEXT and left a positive review. If they now turn it into a shoddy MMO, I'm going to change that, because it informs future buyers.

This is how game developers view them: Praise own our products and diss the competition. Nobody has the customer in mind here.

YouTube let's plays where you can actually see a game being played are my preferred 'review'. There are some entertaining content creators who make informative reviews, too, but you need to see a game being played to really judge it.
If you want spoil the content, watching on YouTube serves its purpose. I jumped into Horizons blind and boy, was that a bland experience. I took the risk again with No Man's Sky and got rewarded.

I could have watched both extensively on YouTube and maybe bought neither.

I occasionally read the reviews on Steam but mostly just glance at the overall review score. The 'overwhelmingly positive' rating certainly persuaded me to buy Dishonored recently whereas I might just have ignored it even though it was on sale...

The Steam reviews are like most things on t'internet...I ignore the ones that seem to have difficulty spelling their own names or think that adding a few Z's or inappropriate capital letters in their gamertag makes them seem all cool and badboi like ;)
