Help building a fighter

I am looking at building a fighter ship, so I can start doing combat missions. I have over 170 million creds to spend, so I don't think money is a problem.

For pure fighting you can't go wrong with a Vulture. Really comes alive with engineering though. For a good combat ship that can also do other things then the Cobra is your ship.

Edit: For medium class ship I'd go with the Chief as well. Challenger and Chief are two of my favorite ships. My A rated Chief with reactive armor comes out to about 100mil.

For small class I'd still go Cobra.

I'll take the hate, FDL is meh. Vulture is good, but lacks hardpoints. For me the Chieftain is the combat ship to have these days. Two small efficient beams. One small multi cannon, high capacity mag with corrosive special.
medium multi cannon over charged with auto loader special. Two large efficient burst lasers. It's a true balance between time to kill shields and time to kill hull. You can stack Guardian shield boosters, which even with 6C bi-weaves and two resistance augmented shield booster will five you 1176 Mj of very fast charging shields. Of course that a G5 engineered ship.

Do you have any actual combat experience? If no, don't burn your cash. Get a cheap ship like the Eagle or Viper. Go learn to fight in them. Learning combat means you make mistakes, which usually are paid by rebuy. So learn with low rebuy.

Might I suggest a Viper Mk IV?

If you're starting out on combat you'll probably die a few times. My Viper is mostly parked these day but I sometimes take it out for a spin to a Hi-RES or Haz-RES or CZ. Mine is worth 10m (A-grade, plus Eng), so the insurance cost if I lose it isn't that great. With your 170m it's easily affordable. Mines got 2x C1 Beam Lasers and 2x C2 Multi-Cannon, and a bunch of other bells & whistles. Somewhat engineered (more to do) but top speed 332 (boost 420), FSD jump range 27Ly, shields 322, armour 825, 8T cargo space.

It's small and nimble enough that it doesn't become an insta-target in a CZ the way a bigger ship will.

Or, as others say, the FDL. I also found the Cobra Mk III and the Asp-X (when rigged for combat) to be very acceptable. I never got to grips with the Vulture and sold it a long time ago (felt too 'fragile' for me, and not enough 'pop' on offense). My fully kitted FDL is worth 107m. My Python (general all-rounder, excellent ship incl combat) is worth 183m (A-grade) but that would clear out your bank balance.

Mainly PvE. I have the Vultre, built with some specs I found online, but when I pull out my weapons, I lose all power lol. I’m getting bored of flying to Sag A, and exploring systems. Need to change it up.

Buy both vipers and practice. See which you like better. They fly different but are both cheap, fun and deadly. If after trying both, you find you prefer viper 3, than vulture or fdl is probably your style. If you like viper 4 better, krait or python is probably what you will like. Get some vipers, get reckless, fight to the death and rebuy without worry. Once you have battled your heart out for a few days, mine opals for $$$,$$$,$$$ and consider my suggestion.

The way I have my FDL set up is my core internals are pretty much all A rated and for hardpoints 2 Gimballed Beam Laser, 2 Gimballed Multicannons and Heat seaking Missles on the huge spot. Its a pretty nice and easy build to use for combat.

My 2 cents is to not buy too big of a combat ship (170 mill is not a lot of credits when you start putting A-modules on a ship). The FAS and FDL are both in my fleet as dedicated combat ships and they work great; however, you can't equip them with an SLF hanger. The Krait Mk-II is (imho) the best ship for combat with a SLF. I had a FGS for over a year and liked it a lot until the Krait Mk-II hit the streets.

With that said, I would suggest you do more work on the Vulture. Its an awesome combat ship for the price (thus a reasonable buy back cost). Or go with a Viper for practice.

Take your Cr170m and use it to build a mining ship and then....y'know.

Depends what you mean by a "fighting ship" really.
I wouldn't go looking for trouble in anything smaller/cheaper than, say, a Python or FdL and ships like that are likely to cost north of Cr150m and you're likely to need rebuys too.

Great advice. 170mil is not enough if you're interested in "easy" PvE flying a conda or T10.

Imperial Courier is the ship for small combat ship fun. I can take out NPC Corvettes with my iCourier.
There again I could probablydo that with my Keelback! ;)

I do these with my FDL once in a while to mix it up but mostly I use my PvE vette because it gets it done so much faster. The next best thing to that is the conda, but you will need 400-500mil credits to set it up properly. You can do the job with any of the med/small ships mentioned in this thread for a lot less if that is a deciding factor for you.
