PvP I Think Someone Tried To Murder Me

The basic idea of station ramming is that the ramming ship gets damaged and at best killed in the process. If that happens while you are over the speed limit, you get the blame and a murder bounty, which will promptly lead to death by station artillery. Being under the speed limit means you're safe though, since then it's automatically assumed that it's not your fault. The fatal thing is that a nudge by someone else, can push you over the speed limit, at which point death by station law occurs again.

GAH, I didn't know that about speeding.

What impact does that have on the person who tried to ram me at the dock?
If they were speeding and rammed me, and I died, wouldn't that get them nooked?

Let's slow this ship down and fly under the moderation team's radar.

*clears throat*

Is there an effective, pro-active way to reduce the chances of getting rammed while docking?
Do any of you have advice/special move/precautions that you take?
Should I buy a shield upgrade?

I got lucky that time.
I cannot depend on that luck.
Try using the radar? It's not just there, to be a play thing, for the cat.

Hint:- Any blips that are heading for the centre of the radar; are really ships, heading for you. :D

As absolutely ridiculous as they may sound that didn't occur to me.
So basically, if you're speeding, you're fair game for a ship ramming.

1: Is that only while speeding or is there a 'hot' period after you slow down?
2: Can you shoot someone who is speeding?

I'm not entirely clear as to the parameters.

I have found that the 100ms speed limit; also prevents damage. What I am saying is; if you hit a solid object at less than 100ms, you survive. Over 100ms, and you risk some real damage. I have learnt this by nose diving into planet landing pads, during rushed illegal delivery missions.

Yes, but usually they're using fast paperplanes for that, which explode when you just sneeze at them.

So two things then:

1: A person may buy an inexpensive ship and ram your paper plane, killing you and themselves, for the LULZ.
2: A person may buy an inexpensive ship, and ram you while you're speeding, thereby killing themselves and giving you a murder count/bounty.

Is the punishment for them in the case of #1 just a 100cr fine for ramming?

case 1 doesn't kill you because his suicideagle doesn't do enough damage for that and the starport doesn't kill you because you don't speed

oh, and while they get a fine they die, too :D

case 2 gives you a murder bounty and for that the starport kills you

There are players that will take advantage of 'you' speeding and therefore 'susceptible' to; being in the wrong when contact is made. There used to be a play. That had a player in a weakened cheap ship hit you and because you were speeding; the station, would destroy your ship. You must have heard about this before now.

Your speed at the point of contact, is the important thing. Not what speed you were doing, 2 seconds before the event.

Okay, so I'm not understanding what happened with the guy who appeared to try and ram me last night.
I was not speeding - in fact, I was slowly drifting towards the dock only barely missing him as he nose dived into it.
I find it unlikely that he just happened to crash on the dock that I was cleared to land upon.

I wouldn't get a speeding ticket or a bounty (my speed was like 10 at most) - so his ship would have had to be built up enough to kill me, but then he'd get zapped by the station for speeding and ramming - (he hit the station awfully hard - I cannot be sure he was speeding though).

Trying to piece together what likely happened there.

Maybe he was trying to ram me at the speed limit, destroy me, losing only his shields, for lols?

He could've tried to ram you to death for lulz (dying in the process) or he could've tried to block you from accessing your pad, making you panic and do something stupid.
Or he could've been a noob doing stupid stuff... Also it's not always clear if someone speeds, so he could've bet on the fact that you are speeding, without being sure.

Okay, that helps.
I'm filling in my friend on this information as well.

As I said before, I'm going to file this under "Null's boys try to gank me, fail miserably in their assassination attempt." and move on with making credits. The reality is that it was probably some anonymous noobcake, but I like a good story.

Maybe, just maybe, you were not connected in any way. Just some crazy fool, attempting to land at the same station, but had come in too hot and your pad, was just the first place they happened to hit the ground.

That is not something that you can relay to your grand puppies. So I would stick with the original 'story', which was, that mass killer Null tried to get you and by excellent flying skills; you survived.

I try to think that it was maybe an accident but a nose dive at that speed - when I've literally encountered no other pilot in open yet (1) - makes me go "hmmmmmm….".

I'm going to add to the story that I was carrying a shipment of infant formula... a donation to a local refugee group.
This story will be a 300 page novel about courage under fire by the time I'm done with it.

I did have a situation at an outpost the other day where an NPC asp scout got stuck upside down against the structure of the outpost after leaving the dock, and this was preventing the pad from freeing up, so me in my python tried shoving him off the station at sub-100 speeds to avoid getting reckless flying fines, which was awkward since after each bump I had to hard-reverse to escape the pad-loitering timer.

Anyway the asp exploded after like the fourth or fifth time but I was okay as I only hit him at like 75.

Cleared the pad though.

There was a thread the other day, about how to achieve high speeds. My recommendation was to nose diving above a planet. There was a lot of posters, discussing the viability of doing this. Maybe, being a small galaxy; you met one of the speed testers. because one issue with performing this manoeuvre , is getting the ship to stop, before you hit the ground.

Pay no heed to the fallable advice in this thread! The best solution is to fly faster. Full boost toward your pad, then use lowering your landing gear as a break, full reverse & down thrusters (4 pips to engines) and slam her down hard. They'll never catch you.

There are (as we all know) people who delight in spoiling the Game for Players. The Suicidewinder is a known issue (it can be any little vessel, but Suicidewinder fits). I remember working at a Community Goal where there was a Spanish person doing just that in a very fragile Eagle (there were Players warning about him; I did as well). He tried ramming me 15 times. As I was always below 95 (just to allow for the possiblity of being pushed over 100) I did not come to the attention of the Authorities. He died 15 times, I did not die once. I did end up reporting him; not for the 'legitimate' exploit, but because he started texting foul language in the open.

That is about what I do when smuggling to a planet. Sound advice.

Once dodged a station rammer by doing a barrel roll. Filed that under, ‘Will Never Happen Again Even If I Try.’

Anyway. Glad to see you’re progressing, Warg! Keep it up.
