how to increase my Cobra range

I changed out of my newbie Sidewinder to move up to a Cobra. But lost a ton of range with 2.97 now as opposed to more than 7 (I think - that's how little I know) How do I start to increase the range on the Cobra, or any other ship when making these sorts of changes?

Is there a shipyard where you are? You'll want to buy a bigger FSD to start.

The Frame Shift Drive (FSD) is the key to how far the ship will jump. The higher the grade (A is best) the better. It is also affected by weight, so if you can keep other modules fairly light, that gives you greater jump range on the same FSD.

D-rated modules are lightest, so you can replace the Life Support and the Sensors to D-rating.

Buy a higher class FSD via outfitting at a station that provides the service. Class A through E. Not all stations selling every class.

Not sure what’s going on here. I think you’re saying you don’t yet understand the basics?

When you buy a new ship it comes with the worst parts. You’ve got to upgrade them to increase range. It’s best to wait till you not only have the money for the ship but at least D rated parts.

E rated - useless
D - lightweight but not powerful
C - balanced
B - heavy duty
A - high quality performance

The better class FSD core internal you pay for and install at any station, the further your range. (Not all stations carry all types though)
But The heavier your ship is the lower the jump range. So upgrade the FSD as much as you can and change everything else to at least D, preferably C.

Does that answer your question or have I misunderstood?

I wonder if the OP's upgraded the FSD on his sidey and then transfered it to his new Cobra?

When you buy a Cobra it comes with a 4E FSD which should give you a range of at least 10Ly.

To create a Cobra with a range of 2.97Ly, you'd need to fit, say, a 2A FSD such as you'd find in an upgraded Sidey.

I'm thinking the OP needs to bung a Class 4 FSD of some kind in there. ;)
