Kinda peeved right now

So here's the deal, due to work/upcoming wedding haven't had as much time to test as I would like, in fact I only just earned enough cash to upgrade to an eagle and fit it out with matching pulse lasers (the cheapest ones out) before I got disconnected the other nigh.

I just logged in today (orbiting freeport) requested docking countless times only to be denied every time.

Then I notice some cargo just floating around so I thought why not go and grab it.

Well no sooner than I deploy the cargo scoop, my shields go offline and I am destroyed - I get a message telling me that I was destroyed by Cmdr I forget his name but began with [redacted]

I am peeved for 2 reasons

1) and I know this seems like I'm crying but I had only just upgraded to that ship/loadout at an approximate cost of around 20,000 credits, and had 1000 credits to my name which means I'm stuck now back at the free sidewinder and I have to do all that work again (I'm not a power gamer and it has taken me from start of beta until now to be able to afford the eagle)

2) and more importantly - why did I get insta killed? what kind of weapon can just take down my shields and blow me out of the sky and not even warn me that I am under attack????

4xCannons - will be nerfed soon. To make up your loss quickly, go around Unidentified signal Sources and look for Gold to scoop and then sell it on black market in Freeport. Just a word of warning, if you see ships jumping in, run - sometimes Gold is free, sometimes it's a trap (you can still scoop up to 2 cannisters if you're quick.

Each ton of gold is over 4k on the black market so you should be able to make money fairly quickly :)

You'll have to do all that work again anyways, probably as soon as next week, as there will most likely be a wipe when Beta 2 drops. Also, and I'm new, but I believe when your scoop is out your shields are weakened. I've seen a couple of streams where that happened with the scoop deployed.

Sadly you are a victim of an other player that dump cargo in space to attract. And he is hiding from your radar scan by going silent. And when you think its free stuff floating in space he will attack you whit those Uber cannons that rip a ship apart in no time.

Only thing I can suggest is to stay away from Freeport.

And congratulation to the wedding :) Hope it will be a memory for life :)

Ok first, you will lose your ship, just accept it because its going to happen over and over. Its just par for the course.

Second, you're clearly doing something wrong if its taken you this long to afford an Eagle! I started playing two days ago, and have clocked up like 5 hours, but I have a Hauler and about c35k in the bank.

As mentioned above, scooping stolen gold from UUS is a very easy way to quickly bankroll your first ship purchase, you can easily make like c20k per 20 mins. Also going straight to an Eagle is going to be a rough introduction to the game, I can say that fairly confidently despite being very new to ED myself because the Eagle is only good for combat and is outclassed by the more popular Viper and Cobra, you're going to be on the losing end of most fights unless you really know what you're doing.

Lastly once you've upgraded from the free Sidewinder always make sure you have the insurance value in your bank account as a minimum float, the insurance cost of replacing your ship when it is destroyed is absurdly generous so its madness not to take advantage.

Play solo, like me. I'm not giving anyone a chance to grief me. I would like to play open, but this kind of stuff would ruin it for me.

NPC's only attack for a reason, I can live with that.

Cannons are misimplemented, as they do way too much damage to shields.

The railguns are just inherently broken and stupid.

You tested how it feels to fly without insurance and get blown up.

The results - back to starter ship.

Next time maybe test it with the insurance :)

Just buy fish at I bootis and sell at aulin and buy something else from Aulin in to sell at I bootis.... I'll let you work out what.

Easy money, no risk. A few runs will get you that eagle back.

I would just like to say, I have never been griefed. And I spend almost all my time in open. Some of that may be due to luck, but some is simply common sense. Like making sure I don't hang about in dangerous areas like right outside Freeport. By knowing when to hide, when to be speedy and when to simply not go somewhere. By being careful and treating the galaxy like a dangerous place.

This is not in defence of griefers. But like I said, I haven't really met any.

How do I know how much I need to insure my ship, I had just over a thousand credits after outfitting, but i needed double that to replace my ship.

How is insurance calculated and where can I find out what I should be putting aside?

I think its roughly 5% of the value of your ship and upgrades. But if you take that as a rule of thumb and double it you can't go wrong (until they change the values anyway).

he wasn't very wise to go to freeport in a eagle un equipt. its a valuable lesson for him to learn . elite and dangerous

You got attacked by one of those miscreants that will cause many to leave the all group forever, or most likely to not even try it. These griefers only care about their own fun, preferably at the cost of others.
It is why I completely stopped doing mp more than a decade ago.

I always said I would start out in the All group, but I am starting to believe that solo is a much more fun option.

Wouldn't have made any difference what loadout I had except to increase insurance costs. I'm not upset about dying, even at the hands of another player I'm upset that I didn't even get the chance to defend myself

Well to be fair an Eagle isn't exactly the most survivable ship, its essentially a lightweight fighter, so if someone gets the drop on you its curtains.

Even a Cobra can be swatted by a plasma accelerator, I guess it comes down to the "bigger fish" trope.
