Advanced gameplay

You mean you haven't 'got it' yet? You still don't get the concept behind the game? Ok then... The game is what YOU make it. There is no next level, no next achievement. The game is your story about how you fit in the wider experience that is the background simulation. The only goals are the ones you set yourself. The game is the backdrop, everything else is down to you. The credits, the ships, the weapons, the missions... all of them are just the tools given to you so that you can write your story.

Thirty years ago I played Elite and I turned those few lines on the screen into a whole alternate universe where I was a guy with a space ship doing my thing. You lucky, lucky bar steward. You have been given so much more. Go forth and do YOUR thing.

awesome

Is there any thread here where someone who is not completely happy with the experience is not mobbed? I can see the point in the OP and to me it seems like a legitimate question raised by hitting the current boundaries. yes, a big sandbox experience will be great but so far we just have a small sandbox with very few toys in it and you do sort of run out of legitimate things to do after a while.

Yes, more features will be added and the sandbox will grow and there will be more things to do but right now, it is limited and that is completely normal for this beta stage.

My suggestion (and way of dealing with that limitation) is to do stupid things and learn how to be a better pilot. The 2 actually go very well together, a lot of skill can be gained by doing stupid things. Quiet a few are taken by the death race idea. Trying to dock smoothly with no flight assist or rotational correction is also fun. Attack a federal ship within a no fire zone and see how many waves of federal and security forces you can get through before you are toast. If we're stuck with the limitations of the game being at a beta stage, beta test your commander :) when all that testing eats away the credits, back to grinding to save up for even more stupid things to do :D

forgot to add. if you get your drop timed just right, you can drop out of supercruise inside a station loitering or stuck inside its walls. great fun :D

I think people are just getting a bit sick of the sheer volume of 'is this it?' threads lately, so unfortunately everybody is getting it.

My view of the "what now?" stages of the game is that I will have my 8 figures of cash, the ship I want, the gear I want, etc...

Then I will start reading the news and current events. The "hand coded" events and faction scenarios that pop up in a broad, regional sense. And I will look for something that triggers my.. [for lack of a more perfect way to say it]
..itch. You know.. something that offends me or my sensibilities enough to go "over there and do something about it"

Lets say "SpaceBabe Corp" has received terrorist threats for its "Charlize Theron" product line of professional copilot/assistant Replica Synth's... because a neighboring system fanatic cult has a thing against Synthetics that happen to be blonde [some "CoalitionForNonBlondes"].

Well, then, THAT is something I'm willing to go over there and fight for!! Thats just not cool, and even If I could never afford a Synthetic as such, I will still step up and demand their right to continue existing! :p

I would go to that system, side with SpaceBabe Co., and find out how my particular skills can help. With an eager gleam in my eye.

And THAT is what that extra money is for: To be able to replace my ship that I may lose in this grueling faction (pvp)conflict, to outfit a Missile Viper for bombardment missions, To buy and outfit additional ships that may be required in other ways, etc.

So you see, the "purpose" of the money is indeed to enable you to do what you want... and it does; you just have to generate the "Purpose", yourself!

PS: if you side with the CFNB... prepare to be unfreinded

isn't that sort of a bad way to welcome new commanders? i mean, i was the one complaining at one stage but that was before understanding the flow and when i see others complaining about something, they are usually fairly new members too. surely some understanding and guidance would be much more helpful then attacking people who are already starting to get disillusioned. the future of this game very much depends on player numbers and a solid community. neither are helped by being hostile towards newcomers and their concerns.

anyway, that's enough from me, i am going to go play elite and i am cashed up so i will probably do a lot of stupid stuff :D

Getting the most expensive ships will probably be one of the last things I do.

How I played the last elite basically, to be honest I cant fully remember but this is the gist.

I started at Sol. Looked at the bulletin board to see what was happening. Some simple taxi mission? Nice that will get me going.

So you want transport to Barnard Star and you'll pay me 200cr? Right, I'll erm take some cargo along the way to make it even more profitable.

Ok, Barnard star, where to next, The Fed army want me to deliver a letter to Altair. And some guy wants a taxi there too, Rightyo, I'll take some cargo too. 3 birds...

A few days later. Got a bit rep now theres an Assassin mission. Not sure I'm ready for that. How about another taxi job till I got some cash for better lasers. You want to go where? Now we are getting into uncharted territory. Ok hop in, a little cash boost.

Woah, what did you say you did again? I got 2 Vipers up my tail that I'm sure have been following me. You wot? Ah great, you are wanted for smuggling, now you tell me. Ah well, full pips to engines.

That was a close shave, but we made it, and I got some cash for a new laser. Lets see whats going down at this spacestation. The armys recruiting again, lets see what I can do to help.

A few weeks later. Look at my shiny new ship, and now I'm building a nice rep as the 'get the job done guy' some interesting opportuninitys have opened up.

But hold on, That system over there looks interesting I think I'll take a look.

A few months playtime later. I been going this way for a long time, Where the hell am I? I Might see if I can make my way back to Sol if I can find it and see if anythings changed. Woah, actually, I'm truly lost now, I think I'll just go this way instead, Hmm whats this..

2 years playtime later. Wow!! I cant believe that just happened, and I just got enough for a Puma Clipper. Got the best 30 crew a man could hope to find, got lots of medals for services, I have respect in most of the local areas and plenty of cash in the bank. This should make getting to Elite a whole lot easier...

5 year later. I really hope a new next gen Elite comes out, ah well, back to this one... Will I ever make Elite? It has still been fun any and a epic journey trying.

I never saw an endgame.

But that was my story.

Most of it is completely hazy.

People should do some research in what they are buying first.

There just simply shouldn't be this amount of people confused with what they bought.

Its hard to keep patients with everyone, Most of the ones that do it in a none ranting way dont get mobbed. Its a slight overreaction if you think this thread is that bad.

Most new members that have been confused but done it in a none ranting way Ive always tried to help, and majority of everyone else has too.

Its only the toys out the pram ranting ones that end up getting messy from what Ive seen.

That's a great story, hazy or not. It's pretty much how I remember Elite.

This might sum up Elite:

He knows not where he's going
For the ocean will decide
It's not the destination...

... it's the glory of the ride.
