Product Update - Planet Coaster is coming to Steam

So what FD is saying, is that I will be forced to install and use Steam just to play PC? No other game I play, I play through Steam. I will be giving some serious thought as to whether I will be asking for a refund and uninstalling this game. Too bad, because I kind of like it.

I don't like it if everything is concentrated.
Some people don't like it when everything is separate. It's impossible to please all the people all the time; in this case, Frontier have received a lot of feedback about Steam support. It makes sense to build on a platform like Steamworks which is mature and stable.

Well i didn't read what went wrong at RCTW in detail, but there had been some issues with pulled UGC if i remember corretly. It was still in the saved games, but couldn't be build anymore.
Correct, and it's a valid concern. My feeling though is that if you've imported a blueprint into your game you'll be able to continue using it (and re-export it as another blueprint if the original was removed). Certainly something to test very well when Alpha 3 rolls around... :)

Sorry it is $5,- not Euros.

I am Ok with Steam in general, only wanted give something to think about. I would have stood by the old launcher, while Frontier is also talking about Origin etc.

I don't know if this still a topic, but some here have a better overview then me.

You are wrong there. You can review at Steam when you bought a Minimum of €5,- (I think it was) at Steam directly. I tried to review Parkitect and i am not allowed to. At least that is the message i got.

When you haven't spend money in Steam you have a so called limited Steam account. You can't do some other important stuff either, like uploading something to the workshop. More info here: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=3330-IAGK-7663&l

I do think that some publishers have different deals in the way Steam rules are applied. If someone only would own Planet Coaster it would become an issue when sharing blueprints (because those work through the Steam workshop).

Valve is a big company and i expressed some concerns here about it in the past, but nothing to really worry about except for the bad support if you need some specific help. The bad support however is more related to the big customer base they have, because for the big companies it is all the same and difficult to serve all those customers. Try to get quick support from Microsoft or Google or Apple. For now i have a lot of games in Steam and haven't had any serious issues, except for some downtime when servers are down.

You can still install and download the mod/blueprints files you need from other websites. Of course you have to manually place the files in the correct location, but with all games i own that use the workshop it should be possible.

Only three things which worries me a bit about Steam:
1. Too much power in one hand.
2. Seems, when i look at RCTW, if a blueprint/ UGC is pulled from the workshop it is gone.
Correct me please if i am wrong there.
3. I cannot review there, because i haven't bought something at Steam yet. All my keys come from outside. (Either game was bought in store with DVD or i got it because it was implemented into Steam)

2. Like Kenneth already said, if you already have it, you can still use it. It's basically a download, once you have it, you have it.
Personally i always copy items to another drive as well. In a worst case i have to format my computer and the item will be gone from the workshop. When you created a backup you can use it forever.

That's correct. They chose to use Steamworks for their sharing features, presumably because it's mature, stable and well-regarded. But unfortunately to play a game with Steamworks integration you need to have a Steam account (and presumably Steam). Personally I don't see the problem in installing Steam for a single game; it's not really any different than having the Frontier Launchpad installed.

If you like the game then what's the difference between launching it through steam and launching it through the Frontier launchpad?

So if i want to use in full i have to buy something i don't want. Frontier should adress that. Because all who haven't had a Steam Account yet will have this problem.
So Frontier has to ask Valve to regard those keys as bought at Steam. Otherwise there will be some problems for them to deal with.

I guess that is mostly why parkitect has parkitectnexus.

Why do you have to buy? Im pretty sure creating a Steam account is free.

Well isn't that what is said here?:

Another benefit of announcing Steam integration early is that the community features that debut in Planet Coaster’s Alpha 3 build on Steamworks functionality so we can prioritise and test the Steam support as early as possible.

Yes. But as Janitor says.

The account is limited unless you buy for $5,- directly from Steam. You cannot make reviews for example.

Steam is free, there are no additional costs to downloading and installing steam. We'll be providing keys to people who have bought the game.
