TrackIR-5. Worth it?

Save the cash and get an EDTracker. @£10 if you search around for parts yourself.
Put away a small bit of cash each week/month for the next foreseeable future, then when the Rift is out in its consumer version grab that.
Not only then will you have better head tracking, you'll have the full virtual experience.

This is fair enough, and frankly for £10 theres not much too loose. however personally i'd still go for track ir, mostly because i have about 10 games that support it out of the box.
Sorry, I'm a little late to the party, but to answer the original question - "Is it worth it"... it's a resounding YES.
I bought mine in 2000 or 2001. It is a TrackIR 3 Pro.
It's still working today. I use it with Elite Dangerous.
So, while the price might seem steep right now when you buy it, it just "works" for games that support it.
You may have to fiddle with response curves in the beginning so you don't get a stiff neck holding your head rock-steady so your screen doesn't shake when you make unconscious movements when you play games, but eventually you'll get used to it and either ignore the screen movements due to unconscious head movements, or you learn not to hold your stead rock-steady and yet have a steady forward view (with deadzones in the curves and all that).

Another thumbs up from me - it works really well with the supplied clip strapped (securely!) to my head set.

I'm investing in Edtracker simply because it was designed and made by people who play Elite Dangerous.
Also because of the ridiculous price of Irtracker, £150 v's £30 I know which one I'm taking!

Or £35, you can buy the LED bracket from trackir, a ps3 camera - remove the IR lense and use a bit of freeware, and you have a ghetto TrackIR setup!
I am on my second TiR, a 3 Pro and a 5. Coming from a flight sim background not using TiR would be impossible. ED has a lot of combat sim about it and lends itself to Trackir really well.
Yes, it is expensive but it adds another dimension to the game which is easy to get used to but try and go back to without it.

TrackIR is mandatory when you would really be into Sims.
I've got an Track IR 3 as i played LockOn and now for Elite an TrackIR 5.
(Shocked how small it is now.) Still using my old Eurofighter cap
i got from on the 50th Luftwaffe Anniversary Airday for the Tracking Clip.
After i tweaked the curves a bit to get rid of the axis centering it felt great and very natural.
Its the next best thing to Occulus Rift in terms of immersion i think.
You feel so much more as in the Game. And the Benefits for Combat are priceless.
For Elite, i would go for this over a hotas in the beginning, if i had at least a Controller.
I got mine a little cheaper, as it was a Test Model. And don't regret it.
If i had an Webcam, i maybe had tried cheaper solutions first, but since i had non,
i was not willing to spend money on that, only to see me buying an TrackIR later anyway
when i where disappointed by those hobby projects.
If you can afford it somehow, buy it.
