Hardware & Technical Getting a Cyborg F.L.Y. 5, any one else got one?

Just an FYI. I got one of these for my son and within 6 months the thumb buttons started falling off. He tried superglue... Not very effective.

Going to get him a better joystick now.

Superglue is wrong way. U need to use metal screw (1.5-1cm length) and it will be indestructible. Look at my above post - i placed photo of repairde button.

It would not be so bad if it were just ONE button... He had several fall off. I will stick it under my soldering magnifier to see what is really broken.

Use 4 metal screws for broken buttons if you like this joy.
It will be better than original. Maybe it looks like tooth implant, but it really works. You dont loose anything.

My joy was under warranty, madcatz send me spare parts (i dont know what parts, i waiting for package). I think they know that technical solution of buttons is no good. Howewer, repair method with screw works good and i put spare parts for another occasion.

I have one of these sticks and now it doesn't work at all when I want to look around the ship or use the UI panels. This might be the known issue thats currently effecting some sticks so I will wait and see if its been resolved in beta 2 tomorrow. If it hasn't I might just have to bite the bullet and invest in an x52 pro which most of the guys streaming on twitch seem to be using with no problems.

Before you invest in something more, check the setup and see if you have set keys to toggle view modes, and if there are keys to look round the panels. On my FLY5 as well as on my X55 I have to toggle the look round the place mode. And I bound the panel navigation keys separately as well.

What irks most is the overly powerful stick springs and the adjustable bits...

The mainspring means you need a LOT of force (compared to other sticks) to move the stick from centre and this is not what you want under combat conditions requiring small corrections. You could fiddle with the sensitivity settings perhaps or the 'deadzone', but since I don't know enough about that and shouldn't have to at this price level of gaming, I don't see why I should have to [redacted] about there... Everything else works out of the box well enough.

I found this too. I have an old MS Sidewinder which I did and do love, but it lacks a Z axis for yaw and has no PoV hat which is also a real let down. That's why I bought a Cyborg F.L.Y 5, but I find flying much more difficult now due to the BILSTIEN coil spring that seems to be installed in this thing. I might just try the cable tie idea, this might help.

I actually searched around for a thread on this stick precisely so I could find out if anyone had found a solution to the stiff spring. I noticed, once the handle is removed from the spring section, there are a couple of tiny screws that look like they hold the stick mount and connector in place. Has anyone attempted to remove this to get the spring out? I'm thinking, once removed, it could be shortened with the aid of some wire cutters...

Saitek/MadCatz, if you're reading this. I would like to request removable springs on all your sticks if you're going to insist on putting ex-F1 suspension springs them. Thanks.

P.S. In an earlier post, someone mentioned they like the lights on the X52. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the stick represented in the game is actually based on the X52. Complete with dual PoV hats (with lights in the hats too) and the little red flip cover switch. Headlook mode next time you're in game and have a squiz!

I just upgraded from this flightstick to a T-Flight HOTAS X, and I couldn't be happier. The stick is horrifically uncomfortable to use. You'd think that the multiple adjustment settings on the stick would help with that, but all they manage to accomplish is introduce a bunch of weak points in the stick where it ends up wobbling.

After a few months I ended up having to death-grip the damn thing just to keep it from flopping around. The dual throttles are nice, very smooth movement on them, but when you unlock them to use them independently, you'll quickly discover that they have differing levels of resistance.

Oh, and it's a MASSIVE dust magnet. All those nooks and crannies will be filled with crap before you know it, and thanks to the material it's made out of, you'll have a hell of a time cleaning it out. The buttons on the stick are mushy and don't provide any tactile feedback when you're pressing them. The buttons on the base are the exact opposite, they have a cheap plastic clicking sensation when you press them in. Feels like I'm always on the verge of breaking the damn thing.

The actual joystick mechanism is prone to malfunctions as well. The resistance on the main spring is way too high considering how light the entire thing is,so you'll end up toppling the stick unless you apply a constant downward force to it. I ended up buying a replacement because the stick suddenly decided that if it stops halfway between dead-center and the restrictor, it'll need 5x the force to get it moving again.

It's not an AWFUL flight stick, but at that price you might as well get a T-Flight instead.

I am very impressed about MadCatz UK service.

I asked them - where i can buy replacement button - and in response i have got brand new fly 5 under warranty.

It is very rare, that high quality customer service in Poland.
Very thanx to MadCatz UK.

Repaired switch for mascatz FLY 5

Hi, Could you re-upload a picture of your repaired joystick. I have sw2 broken and wanted to know how you fixed it with a screw.

Thanks Orangepeel.

i have taken my fly5 back due to the roll axis getting stuck in a roll, now have another faulty saitek/madcatz controller, will never be buying another saitek product, no matter how well theyre advertised

I have this same joystick FLY 5, top button (2) broke when I was playing Star Wars Battlefront 3. Tried every kind of glue with no luck. First I tought about screwing button back to joystick with small thin screw, but I didn't like to ruin button touch with any screws stciking out from button. I used cheap thin electric wire to fix it, just drill 1 - 1,5 mm hole through button joint from side to side and attach it back to joyscitk with wire, no screws or anything needed and result is almost unnoticeable and better than new.

I have one of these sticks, used it for about a year as a casual trader/explorer without any issues. Even though it felt a little flimsy and cheap I really wasn't sure that I would need (or could justify) anything more fancy. I just upgraded to an X52 on a whim and I am really enjoying the extra buttons and the more precise throttle control. I actually feel like I am piloting a craft now, where before I definitely felt like I was playing a game. Having said that, from my own experience I reckon the FLY5 is a great stick if you are on a budget. There may be better options out there but it did the job well for me and it still works perfectly.
