Proposal Discussion What are your Joystick settings?

Hello guys,

just started playing the beta yesterday and its already awesome. Needed severel tries just do get docked...

Anyways, i play with aSaitek Cyborg 3D and i want to know of u guys that use a joystick too, how u set up your buttons and axis.

I got the z-axis (twisting the stick) for lateral thrust, but sometimes it seems not to be best ddecision.
What are u using ur z-axis for? Yawn or thrust? Sadly my joystick doenst have too many buttons and i consider buying a hotas. Until then i have to swap between toggle and keyboard.

Hey :)

If your stick has a coolie hat (I think it might) use that for lateral thrust.

And since you already have a joystick, instead of getting a hotas consider
getting a CH Products PRO Throttle instead. You can then get a better stick once your current one breaks down (if ever).

The PRO Throttle alone will probably be cheaper than a complete HOTAS and is also of very high build quality. I have one, alongeside a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro, and that combination works very good.

IIRC ED supports up to three input devices.

see you out there

I've got a Thrustmaster Hotas X, and set the twist handle to Roll. Left-right is Yaw, and the hat (the mini joystick on top) is for lateral thrust (Up/Down/Left/Right).

Since yaw is pretty slow I first had it set on the twist handle (since I thought this would be a unnatural and awkward motion for the wrist). But after I tried, it feels more logical with twist->roll. Roll the handle, roll the ship. I've gotten used to that.

Anyway, as we say in Sweden. "Smaken är som baken". What you prefer is up to you.

I can't tell you exactly how I have the controls set up as I'm not at home, but I use a Thrustmaster T16000M. I use the POV hat on it to look around the cockpit and the button just to the left to scroll through sub-systems, other than the trigger button to fire I use the Keyboard for everything else, including throttle control, thrusters and targeting. Though I do use VA and so most things except thrusters and throttle control is done through that (SC, Landing Gear, Cargo Scoop)

I use the Thrustmaster T Flight Hotas X.

I have the following button setup:

X and Y axes are yaw and pitch, Z axis for roll (feels more logical in space than the traditional setup - also easier to aim).

The stick's hat-switch I use for left-right-up-down thrusters.

The throttle I use for, funnily enough, throttle. There is also another analogue axis on that throttle, which I use for forward and back thrusters.

I headlook using the mouse, with controls for UI elements also mapped to the mouse.

I also have targetting, view centring, speed boost, jump, landing gear, cargo scoop and redirect power various ways set to the other buttons on the stick.

Edit: Also toggling flight assist.

Hi

I've ordered a 16 button Thrustmaster 16000. Only £40 from amazon. Saw a videoa of a guy using it for ED and what makes it so good is that it has 2 banks of 3 buttons each side of the stick. Slave 2 buttons on the left to the 2 main panels you use and the other buttons to cursor movement and select and you're good to go.

I echo using the hat for thruster/strafe. You really need that sort of control sometimes. I could do with another hat for looking around as it really helps if you can keep track of targets. I might map those 4 keys to buttons when the stick arrives.

Another thing I cannot recommend highly enough, both for practicality and fun, is Voice Attack. I can control speed, landing struts, weapon deployment, cargo scoops, radar ranges, power settings and going dark etc with simple speech commands. You can even set it up to get the microsoft voice engine to answer your voice commands with spoken confirmations. It has a macro facility also, for more complex stuff.

(There's someone selling a voice pack for £8 which has a huge range of good female computer voice samples for ED. I have it set up to answer 'wonderful' when I tell the ship 'Stow Weapons'. I'm very easily cracked up. :) )

I find it easiest with the Z-axis turning the ship left and right, moving the stick left and right for rolling and up and down for Yawing. I tried using the Z-axis for thrusters but when it comes to dog-fights you ideally want to use the z-axis for fine-tweaking shots.

I have a Thrustmaster T-Flight and the build quality is pretty damn nice for the price. Don't think mine has 16 buttons but it's still great, I still have to have my keyboard to hand for things like docking etc but there pretty cool once you get use to them. Enjoy!

It better have 16 buttons or I'm never trusting Some Guy On YouTube ever again. :D

Thanks for all the answers. I used my coolie hat for viewing around, but i´ll give the thrusters a try.
I didnt know they got throttle-only-devices. I check that out too, that would be awesome, because iam really satisfied with this joystick.

edit: whao, thats a price for just a throttle...

I've got the Saitek/Madcatz FLY 5.

Twisting the stick rolls me left or right
Pushing forwards makes me pitch down and pulling back pitches up (like a plane)
X Axis is for turning left and right.
Throttle for precidely that - throttle.

I use the POV hat for the thrusters up, down, left and right.

I think that's all you're interested in knowing?

I'm a bit strange because when I play plane games I use the twisting motion for the turning left and right and the x axis for the rolling and have it as above for spaceship games.

I have FLY 5 and hotas X.

Mappings - everything on joy.

I have a Saitek X52 and just bought CH Pro Pedals for it. Yaw is set to the pedals, but I still have to get used to them. But since I had a nice CH system (Stick, Throttle, Pedals) years and years ago (before USB came out and before I left them behind in Germany when I moved to the USA) I think getting used to them will go quick.

I have a Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS as well. Stick and throttle on one base (which can be separated if wanted). It's a great stick, but it's been sold out at Amazon for about a month now. If you can get it at regular price, you'll pay ~US$45.

The stick is my pitch, roll, and yaw. I twist the handle to yaw as that's more natural for me. Plenty of other flight games before ED.

I use my hat switch for power management. Left is more to SYS, up is more to ENG, right is more to WEP, and down is Reset. The main trigger is gun 1 and the button next to the hat is gun 2. The other two buttons on the stick are to select the target in front of me and to move to the next firegroup setting.

The throttle has all my thrusters. Of course, forward/back is throttle forward or reverse. The front of the throttle has a rocker switch which I use for right/left thrusters and two buttons which I use for up/down thruster. The four buttons I reach with my thumb are for boost, select most hostile target, FA On/Off toggle, and HUD Look (with HUD Look pressed down, I then tick my hat switch right or left to get to the side HUD panels).

The last two buttons on the base are currently for stowing my weapons and toggling silent running.

The other important functions are on my keyboard in easy to hit locations. Left CTRL is heat sink, keypad . is Supercruise/Hyperspace, keypad Enter is cargo scoop, and DEL key is landing gear.

As more stuff gets added, like shield manipulation, I'll have to see what would work better. So this is subject to change.

Yeah that's why I bought the one I did! I didn't take into consideration the number of buttons, although it has a lot more than I thought, I mainly bought it for the throttle. It ED automatically picks up the Joystick by name and applys a few default controls and the best part is the throttle control It sticks as where you leave the throttle without having to do any tweaking. I honestly thought it would be a pain to set up the throttle but this was the easiest thing ever, I would really recommend one, even if you don't have a joystick.

Yeah, I'm another one of the heretics using the twist for roll, and the left-right axis for yaw. Nontraditional, but I find it intuitive.

I use the Thrustmas Hotas X too. I've been using the roll on the rocker switch on the throttle (as a long time flight simmer, I couldn't get used to using the joystick to roll). Lateral and vertical thrusters I've assigned to the HAT switch, weapons systems on the joystick (target straight ahead on that weird little forefinger switch on the joystick), and targeting controls set to the throttle buttons.

Works for me, but each to his own. Just go with whatever feels natural.

I use t. Flight hotas x. Left right is roll, twist is yaw. Hat is power distribution. Primary and secondary are the triggers. Top right is select target, front right is cycle load out. Throttle is throttle, 5 and 6 on throttle is vertical thrust, rocker on front of throttle is lateral thrust. Big button near rocker is landing gear (that will change), 7 is deploy and stop weapons, base buttons are left menu and right menu.. Some buttons will change cause I use voice attack and some commands just don't need to be on the sticks.

Well... I use an X65f, but...

X/Y is Pitch/Yaw. Twist is roll.

Split throttle, one side controls thrust, otherside controls vertical but only while landing.

I have vertical and horizontal thrust on rotary hats.

Then every button I ever need to access in flight on my stick or around the throttle. I use a FAOFF hold on my pinky button, with secondary fire on the pinky switch.

Those are my main fight/flight controls.
