Proposal Discussion Sliding scale for exclusive skins, especially in Beta

Like many others, I'm disappointed by Frontier's decision to price the wireframe Cobra skin at £10. I know that they won't have done this deliberately to fleece the people who have paid most (in both time and money!) to play Elite and its sequels over the last 30 years, who this paint job will appeal most to, but even the appearance that this is the case has left a bad taste in fans' mouths.

May I suggest, instead, a sliding scale for such items which recognises the backing which people have already given to Elite: Dangerous. e.g. Something like -

£2 for Alpha backers
£3 for Premium Beta backers
£5 for Beta backers
£10 for people who've pre-ordered the finished game

. The 10 quid is steep for nostalgia... But it will keep the skin rare. All the more special for those who end up getting it

Yep, I also expect that they are testing the limits of pricing to see how far people are ready to go (or not). Much better to "betatest" this before full commercial release...

As for the skin...I'm thinking about it...it's a bit rich, I agree, but I still might have to splash out for it in the end...we just have to see how it feels when the deadline closes in at the end of the 10 days. :D

Anything we pay over the price of the full gam is a donation in support of development of the game. We have not bought any further rights, other than the rewards specifically offered by FD, and are not entitled to preferential treatment :).

I agree 100% with the O/P.

Vanity items represent a good (and generally fair) way to boost Fd's coffers, but - IMO - the price of £10 for ONE ship is completely OTT.

I missed the kickstarter but was happy to pay £150 for the premium beta, not because I wanted early access but because I'm really keen to support the development of the game I've been waiting so long for.

A graduated price for this skin would to me reflect FD's recognition of this and thus make it a two-way process.

My two penn'orth. :(

They're just skins. If you like them and can afford them, buy them. If you can't don't. I'm not going to point and laugh and say "DeLorean's Mum can't buy him fancy skins." ;)

I don't see the need for a steep price and a time limited offer. Either of them alone would keep it rare, but together they just look like a cash grab (not saying it is intended as such, but that is how cash grab usually look like when companies do them).

God, that other space game can now be used to justify all of the worst excesses of man can't it? :) Objectively £10 is a ludicrous amount of money for a skin. Subjectively, my heart overruled my head and I bought the thing, so now I'm part of the problem... :( and :) and :S all at once.

#conflicted.

Why would you feel bad after/before spending money on a skin? What does it matter? I am confused.

If the revenue is used to help develop ED, then the cause is just; is it not? I mean, free skins were never part of the agreement in the first place. It's not like we're friends with the devs, even if they're all nice guys and gals (which they are, imo), and they should give us free stuff. The agreement is that we'll give them money and they will give us ED.

Maybe the feeling is that they owe us because of all the money, support, feedback and love they're getting from us. If you're a committed supporter then it sometimes almost feels like you're part of the team. And in a way, this is true. Our testing, feedback and love are essential for making ED the amazing game it will become. But they don't owe us anything, except the final game.

So, if you like the skin; buy it and support ED. If you don't want to spend money, don't buy it. But don't feel bad about just a little skin, because ED is still being developed; that's the important part. And they still love us too, I'm sure :)

I'm amazed that people are making such a huge deal over this. Some are going as far as saying things like "I'm never playing this game again" Really? Lol. It's just a skin. The only time you'll ever see it is in your hangar. It doesn't affect game play at all. No one is forcing you to buy it. Would you be happier if it simply didn't exist?

To the backers that are whining about having spent tons of money on alpha and premium beta access that are saying it should be free or cost less because they already spent tons of money: You paid to get the game funded and released and guess what? it's actually coming out! You should be happy about it. Against all odds this game is finally getting made and it's brilliant! As a bonus incentive FD gave you early access along with several other goodies. But they never said anything about all future content being free or discounted to backers. Here have a look at their kickstarter page:

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1461411552/elite-dangerous

Does it say anything about discounts on future items? Nope!

I'm all for paying for cosmetic vanity items. This will help fund the game further and give the dev more intensives to continue working on the game for years to come without having us pay a monthly fee. Would you rather pay £9.99 a month (WOW subscription) just to play the game or play for free after the initial purchase and then spend that £9.99 on optional vanity items?

Oh and one last thing... I'm just going to put this right here to put things in perspective:

How does having a different opinion from you, which I have stated calmly and clearly, constitute 'whining'?

Your insulting tone suggests you may be a troll - or should I just put it down to plain ignorance?

[edit] I've just had a quick look at your previous posts and I note that this is the second time you've complained about whining on the forums - enough with the whining about whining, already!

I want stuff for free because I think I need stuff.

-you do not HAVE to buy the skin, what do you want next? discount on t-shirts?
