Sharing Ships Between CMDRs

Right off the top, I know that we cannot share actual ships between CMDRs, but I'm curious if I'm the only one who "shares" a ship or two between my main and alt CMDR via roleplay. I have two CMDR accounts, specifically because I did not want one CMDR to have "all the ships" (especially those requiring a superpower allegiance), but there are a couple of ships that I really love in specific roles, like my Type-7 Explorer. Since my two CMDRs are "related", I thought it would be kinda fun to "share" a ship or two between them. Basically this means building the same ship twice, one for each account, and then only one CMDR gets to use it at any given time.

I know it may sound corny for those who don't roleplay, but I kinda like it! It would be cool if someday we could actually lone our ships to other CMDRs, though I suppose this would break the balance of the game. Perhaps we could lone ships between our own CMDRs linked to the same Frontier account? In the meantime, what I'm doing works fine.

So does anyone else "share ships" in this fashion?

Never heard of this. Each of your CMDRs has the same ship in their fleet? This allows you the RP mechanism that they share a "family" fleet so to speak? Just trying to understand.

Not every ship, just the ones I really, really like. My Type 7 Eureka Maru is the main ship I'm "sharing" right now, for exploration and cargo runs. The build is not exactly the same across the two CMDRs (I have different engineers unlocked for each), but close.

There are other ships that I purposefully want to keep separate. Duck's big "battleship" is the Conda, whereas Jenny flies a Cutter instead. Jenny tends to prefer the posh Imperial ships, and Duck flies more of the "duck tape" ships. It helps keep each CMDR unique, yet also have a couple of common ships, which I just pretend is the same ship.

ps - I really wish I could multicrew with myself, as this would add to the "family feel". Someday, when I get a PS5, I'll use my old PS4 specifically for this purpose!

Maybe not sharing the ships exactly, but all 3 of my Cmdrs have some ships with the same build e.g.
Adder scavenger
Dolphin explorer
FDS miner

The only differences are the engineering levels - 13A is the oldest account and has better access (for now)

Interesting. How do you keep the ships' locations in sync? If you fly the Maru to station XYZ with one CMDR, do you fly to the same station with the other CMDR then use ship transfer to move the doppelganger Maru to the same location? Or do you just tend to operate both CMDRs out of the same home station, and return to it at the end of every mission so all the ship clones are in the same place?

I've never really considered an RP relationship between my two CMDRs; one is now more or less a permanent explorer so is nearly always thousands of light-years from civilisation, while the other has only ever left the bubble long enough to unlock access to Palin. They may have crossed paths at Shinrarta or Svass, I guess. Or at one of the Engineer bases.

Thinking about it, this would be a lovely QOL feature for FD to add: allow people with multiple accounts to link them, and have one of their unused avatars appear as a holo-me on the deck of the active account's ship. This wouldn't be "proper" multicrew, so would not provide extra pips. But it would be a nice little cosmetic thank-you to those players who bought second or third accounts in lieu of the oft-mentioned but never delivered multiple save slots, and who don't want to go to the hassle and expense of multi-boxing.

My two commanders definitely know each other, and they've cooperated a couple of times in spite of the fact that one's spending most of his time exploring. I was kind of happy when they ended up in the same place for the first time, and tracked their meetings from then on.

I've never thought about "sharing ships"; that's a neat idea, though since only one has unlocked Professor Palin the two clone ships couldn't be identical. And then there are cosmetics: one of these guys really likes fins on his spaceships :). But I might try it in future.

While it's not uncommon for us to share the same home system, I don't worry about this aspect too much (especially since ship transfer is a thing). The only "syncing" I do is that if one CMDR is out exploring in the Maru, then the other can't use it. But as long as the ship is docked somewhere, then it's available to whoever needs it. I have a Dolphin and a anti-Xeno Vulture that I'm considering doing the same with.

In other words, if the two CMDRs own the same ship, then I'm looking at have them "share" that ship. There are a number of ships that are exclusive to one CMDR or the other (Duck doesn't fly Imperial and Jenny mostly does). Another fun aspect of this is that these ships share names, so if a CMDR in Open one day sees Jenny in the Maru and another day sees Duck in a similarly-configured Maru, it might give them something to wonder about :D

It's very modest / basic loadout, tried and true for me. The size 4 is a fixed LR beam with thermal vent, the size 3s are turreted focused burst, one with that scramble effect, the two mediums are seeker missiles, and the smalls are turreted MCs with corrosive and emissive effects. Oh and of course I've got a fighter with fixed beams, which ironically dishes out more DPS than my size 4 beam!
