Why is this NOT the way it is?

I talked to one of the astronomers last night looking at stars in a viewing session out in the countryside. He said the nearist star getting there at light speed would take 40 years or more. I did meet an astronomer that has played ED and we sold a few astronomers on playing the game but I really need a big wide telescope soon. weve just had one member take pics of the ISS with his camera. really

So what happens to some poor Commander who is out exploring on the edge of nothingness exploring. There may be no suitable planets for him to land on (if he has Horizons that is, if not, well he is well and truly screwed). So his only solution is to log off whilst in space - correct? Now with the OP's 'brilliant' idea, that Commander will have to log back on regularly to refuel. So what if the Commander can't log back in, for some real life reason they have to go away, or just can't log back on. Or they do manage to log back in only to find they are in a system with a non-scoopable star and don't have sufficient fuel to jump out of the system.

I can see how the OP's idea would work in the bubble, but not everyone plays in the bubble to they!

That's the gist of the whole thread: get rid of everybody who can't dedicate time for the game each and every day. You have any duties outside of that and can't bother for the game on a permanent basis -> get lost, give your money to another game.

no, that is the gist of nothing, and this is just nonsense. realism has nothing to do with grind and mindless gameplay. there is enough of that, in spades actually, in elite, and realism is next to zero.

OP despite it being a terrible idea, you can still do it yourself, by just leaving your self logged in when you got to bed/work/out etc.

That way you can have all that risk and thrills and whatever else this does for you, without all the rest of us having to have it.

Carry on.

So 45 people in the UK doing a cimmunity goal all log off in the station where you get the mission/hand in the resource.
Then the US comes on line, and no-one can take part.......

Scrub that..... excellent idea OP.

already mentioned this... read entire thread before replying... I think that's a rule.?.

This game isn't close to being a simulation of life. A galaxy simulation, yes, but not a space life simulation. It's not even a space flight simulation.

Realism often does not equal a fun game. I don't want to have to worry or stress about something happening to my ship(s) in game, while I'm at work, and unable to do anything about it until my next day off.

There are plenty of things in this game that can be made more realistic, and fun.
But some whacky persistent CMDR nonsense is not one of them.

Sounds to me like you just want another way to troll CMDRs.
once again... convenience as an arguement

I wouldn't mind re-instancing people that pad hog, so that disappearing into the station for hours on end would eventually bump you to a quieter instance to prevent traffic blockages for players who are actually awake and playing, but moving people to another game mode entirely seems a bit pushy for very little effect. That seems like it'd make a lot of outgame annoyances such as having to reset your mode every time you blow out the timer.
this is also a terrific idea

Now, Now, - I just reread the entire thread .... again.
No mention of CGs, there was some inference in the Jameson post on page 1, but inference only.

Your making it up to be super annoying now, glad I used the sarcasm. pretty sure trolling from a false accont is a rule as well.

Have a great night.

Simple: Overhead

The more there is to keep track of the more bandwidth that gets consumed. Since this isn't a garbage pay-to-play game, they want to keep the overhead at a minimum.

So sorry to everyone who wants to prove their courage and might be blowing up offline ships, but this isn't the game for you.

Too right. This is a game, not a job.

The BGS serves as the persistent world, it keeps moving when you're offline.

I see no good reason for FD to waste resources on CMDRs who aren't even online.
Even more, I see no valid reason why players need to be available to respond to dangers 24/7, in a video game about flying space ships.
Again, I'm here to play a game, not sign up for voluntary on-demand work, like some sort of on-call fireman.

I think ED is a decent sci-fi world (and interactive astronomical) simulator. Lots of sci-fi fans continue enjoying ED for this reason. Haven't seen this level of realstic-seeming interstellar background achieved anywhere else in a game.

No, not at all, and yes.
+1 for lolz
