How do you play ED?

I jump on for a week or so post big update then drop it for months at a time.

Playing in intervalls is what I do too. Also after a longer break, NPC ships seem to get way better until I realize it's only me who has put on rust :D

Luckily the game has enough variety to be played in continous gameplay loops. When I am trhough with all the new stuff I can gladly go back to some activity I haven't been doing for some time. At this time it is basic bountyhunting. After fighting Thargoid Scouts and Interceptors going after the full variety of human ships is a real blessing for me.

One thing I never do is to set goals within the Game. I set 'Stepping Stones'. For example, within 6 months of starting I got an Anaconda. For some people this was a major objective and, once they had achieved it, had nothing else to do. I used (and continue to use) "The Helping Hand" to help me move on within the Game (she can help increase my finances through trade, my combat experience (at RES sites), and (every so often) help me to get new Players off to a better start through use of the Trade Dividends). She has helped increase the enjoyment of the Game for me, so has added to the Game (rather than ending it).

I recently got back after an Exploration run. I did earn a few credits (OK, more than a few hundred million credits! :D ), and I have spotted a Stellar Enigma that I should try to investigate further. However, I probably will do something else for a while, so that exploring doesn't wind me up.

My main account mostly explores these days, although when I get back to the bubble ,another 150 jumps or so, I would like to try my hand at Thargoid combat, so will re-equip my T10 for the job - no doubt eat through the 10 rebuys budgeted quite quickly.
My alt lives in the bubble doing anything that seems interesting at the time...

The game has plenty to do for me, and with 2 accounts I can enjoy that choice :)

#4. The ADD Method. I just do whatever catches my interest.

I used to #3 a lot, but once I’d done those things, I started to #4 and never stopped.

I generally pin my game play around my favored factions. I will grab up the chores I'm interested in, pick the appropriate ship and head off. In most cases something will pique my interest and send me off in whatever direction that notion points me.

I willingly trade and mine for my factions, but I consider my character as a combat focused Commander. And, all of this is done with my own RP/Character perspective in mind.

One of the main reasons I enjoy ED so much is (IMO at least) there is no right or wrong way to play it. You as the Commander, are solely responsible for your actions, how you play, what you do in game. This got me thinking, just how do others play the game? I know it won't be the same as my way and suspect everyone plays the game a little differently from everyone else. So do you/have you:
  • Found that one activity you enjoy and focus on that and that alone?
  • Role play your Commander, you have defined a set of rules and follow them, even it is detrimental to your safety?
  • Set yourself a series of goals, and totally focus your efforts on achieving those goals (i.e. decide to reach a certain rank and all you do is related to getting that rank)?
  • You never really have a plan or a goal, you just do whatever grabs your interest at that given time?
  • You read about some Commander doing 'something' in the game and decide then and there that you will try that as well, even if you have never thought of doing that task before?
  • Want to try, or at least, attempt to try everything in the game, no matter how inane, silly or grindy that thing is?
Over the course of the last 2 years, all of the above. Currently I'd say I'm at the "whatever grabs your interest" phase, which has been contributing to the efforts of the way more focused folks with some station repair runs. I rarely stay focused on any one thing for more than a week or two though, as there always seems to be something else to do next.

I play the Space Cowboy, I go anywhere for a buck. Trading and exploring. My plan is double Elite in a Cobra. Mark III, just as a nod to the original which I played. Its taking a while, I just don't have much game time.

Now that I bought a beautiful Cobra MK III and that I can travel way further and to many places then before, I think I'm definitely going to help damaged / stations in repair...these people need help!

I'm taking a break atm too - before that, I am what money can buy!
I will hunt down bad people, I will ferry your biowaste, I will haul people to see pretty stars and I will knock out power generators on planet, if the price is right. I went mining, made lots of cash, happy days. Now I'm waiting for 2020, hoping it will bring something good.
I did fire it up yesterday and mined some more VOpals because I wanted to catch up watching The Walking Dead while doing something mind numbing.

I do whatever I like.
Mostly it's this:
You never really have a plan or a goal, you just do whatever grabs your interest at that given time?
Which in itself is a problem, as I often find myself doing stuff leftover from the last days and having lost interest, so I do something else.
And on the next day I regret that decision and do something entirely different again

Fwiw I do not recommend the T10 as a bug hunter (even though it was marketed as such...), I tried before and it was awful. A key ingredient for bug hunting is straightline speed (min 480-500m/s), which the T10 doesn't have (and it's also too slow to move around, unlike your targets, both big and small), plus it's a bullet magnet due to its size.

I'm using a Challenger but can recommend Krait Mk2 or the Cutter if you must (I personally prefer smaller ships as the repair costs won't outweigh the bonds, although many in my squadron use the Cutter due to its shield/armour capabilities, and speed, at least vs interceptors).

Back OT, I arrived in Colonia last night. Decided not to move my fleet as it's just too expensive (plus I'd have to move it back to the bubble eventually), so apart from my explorer Phantom I have to start from scratch buying and building ships, and make do with the inferior module/ship selection available.

Have to say my recent sense of boredom has vanished completely, again. Built a mediocre almost non-engineered Krait Mk2 combat ship last night, and popped a few smaller ships in a High RES. Nothing spectacular (apart from the background!), but I had more fun than burning through tons of NPCs with my A-rated and heavily engineered Corvette. Will probably get more into different types of engineering bits which I haven't tried before - now that the engineers are all close together I'm more happy to experiment a bit more. Happy days.

Thanks Obiw :)
Although I have a Cutter...
The T10 is a slug it's true, I could tank out a Krait II, or even have a play with the Challenger - not flown or equipped one yet, but that is what the fun is about. My consideration with the T10 was my lack of combat skills as it wil hull tank quite nicely, and with Guardian reinforcements would reduce caustic damage.
I'll have a play with a Challenger though, thanks for the suggestion.

No worries. Not sure if it's really that great objectively speaking but I picked the Challenger because I wanted to try the Alliance ships at the time, then compared the 3, and the Challenger has great hull potential and the hardpoints work well with different configurations depending on who you target (scouts vs interceptors). With Guardian HRP/MRP's as you say you can pretty much ignore caustic damage and still achieve about 3500-4000 hull points which is plenty for a Cyclops at least.

Wish i could play more. Since Dec 2018 i have rarely been in the game. Not playing anything else (Except maybe Long Dark on my laptop). Need an ED Injection.

Hopefully the burnout will burn out soon.

Slightly off topic but since I am the OP I think I may be allowed ;) but what are your thoughts of the Clipper as a bug hunter. I have one sitting there that I really don't have a role for except for fun flying, would it work as a Thargoid Thumper?

I don't like the way it looks and the risk of getting laughed out of an AX CZ by a flower ship because my vessel looks like Donald Duck would be too much to bear;)

Only briefly owned a Clipper, and had the same problem as you - any role I tried to assign to it, another ship could do better, plus it shouldn't be a large pad ship. But you could always try I guess - if you have Guardian gear unlocked, it's pretty easy to build a ship on the fly without wasting too many mats on engineering.
