I am severely tempted to try out the Type-10 as an exploration ship. What are the Pros and Cons?

Yeah, but it's a damn sexy brick!

Get some practice in. High G planets will be the test so find one in the bubble and try it out.
Zero issues if you run the vert thrusters as analog (Alternate flight control) A 9g planet will feel like a 0.5g moon. You can descend vertically at a minimum rate of 1m/s on any planet.

Basic requirement is at least an analog slider once in Alternate mode. Flight landing override will also achieve the same thing (Landing gear must be down)

I have a guide somewhere on the main forum.

SC maneuverability shouldn't really be an issue these days since the bulk of scanning is done via the FSS. I carry a fighter to check out anomalies etc.

I just can also chime in: I wouldn't use it for exploration due to it's handling in supercruise.

Sure it can carry a lot of stuff and you can get acceptable jump range even. But no matter if you just want to cover distance and quickly tour around some stars from jump to jump or if you find something interesting and want to take a closer look, the ships SC handling would spoil it for me.

I find traveling in this ship a chore. Some other ships, even with lower jump range, seem much more traveling friendly. I use the T10 for AX CZs, where it has some features (mostly: number of hardpoints) which the other big ships can't compete with. But I'd only use it for exploration at gunpoint... :D

The SC handling is no real concern of mine. I usually fly a Conda or Cutter. Its the difference between going from a flying cathedral to a slightly larger cathedral lol

I'm curious, this got me thinking about my fixation on jump range and ships.
what is the reasoning for having long range jumps? I assume to get to those really distant stars naturally but if I wanted to see more stars and travel long distances as well but wasnt worried about doing it fast, would 20 ly be sufficient to carry me across the galaxy?
I went to a few sites after reading this thread and thought about the cockpit views of the various ships. I like the type 9 full rap around view because obviously seeing more of the space around me is going to add to the quality of the experience. am I over thinking it by convincing myself I need super long jump ranges to do exploration? can I do cross galaxy trips in short range ships like 20 ly or less?

Yep, absolutely. You'll have difficulties if you go to areas where the stellar density is low, but otherwise no problem.

The Cutter actually has a much better Yaw and Roll rate (Conda has only better Roll rate) and i find it faster and less tedious avoiding the star after each jump than my Conda.
This thread might come in handy in regards with SC maneuverability.

I've all the respect in the world for the Type-10 explorers, as I've tried and failed with it on more than one occasion for just one reason, SC handling.

I agree with some others here, it is far worse than a Cutter or Conda so far as handling. It's still a fine ship though for plenty of other things, doesn't hurt to build one and try it out, OP.

True Explorers™ don't get ganked, it's the old tourists piled into tour buses (DW2) that get ganked ;)

I've been exploring in a shieldless Type-7 for ages, and nobody has the slightest clue where I am at when I go out.
You were never a boy scout then. :p

Be Prepared. Words to live by. ;)

Yes I was, and we never carried guns on our camping trips 🤔

Now if you or anybody else can actually find, capture, and destroy me when I'm out exploring (I promise to play in Open while my bandwidth allows), then I'll use my Boy Scout talents to catch a crow and eat it.

This. The furthest trip I ever did was "up" and "out". I've hit a stretch there, where I was jumping from one brown dwarf to the next, about 30 LY apart, and no other stars in jump range. But as long as you avoid such off destinations, even 20 LY jump range should to the job. (Mind you, I am not a big explorer. Any real explorer would consider my tours as checking out what's in the backyard. So take my statement with this in mind. )

I'll take the extra equipment and total peace of mind for a loss of 2ly any day, thanks. If it was my ship, I'd ditch the mining gear and take a lot more hull and weapons in order to be able to deal with NPCs, humans and thargoids, despite the remote likelihood of running into either, it's a design philosophy, and one I've spent a lot of time perfecting without sacrificing usability for purpose (in this case jump range), and therefore advice I like to pass on to others. :)

Ha! I had something similar in my first long-ish jaunt out of the bubble in an un-Engineered Cobra III. Ran into a patch of brown dwarves/T-Tauris. Got down to one jump's worth of fuel and finally found a class F in among the sea of un-scoopables. Kinda fun. This was well within the disk as well, nowhere near any of the edges. Think it was out near NGC 7822.
