New disciplinary action for my Kids, mining rocks in the SRV

I haven't even tried my crater buggy yet, just started about a week ago. Watched youtube vids about searching the alien sites with it but didn't even know it could mine hmmm.
A lot to learn in this game isn't there.
Just tried some mining and went to a station to sell what I had processed only to find I didn't know how to get it out of the ship, I went into panel 4 to the refinery and it had stuff in it so I went to the right of the line (Thinking it would put it cargo) but dumped it I guess IDK. haha sooner or later I'll figure this out.

SRV "mining" isn't like traditional space mining, it's basically "micro material gathering", often for elements. (Used for synthesis and engineering)
All you do is shoot rocks, or geological/biological thingies for materials to scoop up.

To get in the SRV (assuming you have one), land on any planet, and open the roles panel (the "down" panel), select your SRV, and deploy.
To get back in your ship, drive under the holographic square until the "board" light appears, then go to the roles panel again, and select "board" . :)
You can use the roles panel to dismiss and recall your ship too.

Have you tried going to a Geological site?
1) you can reliably get G4 elements from needle crystals (except selenium)
2) it's more fun.

You can also visit the distant biological sites (about 1600ly away, then 180kls from entry), that contain almost pure G4 elements, which you can fill up in no time.
Combined with trading down your current stock of G4 elements (bar Selenium) before you set off, you can basically max out everything in a few hours.

No I haven't, it's on the list of things to do though. I've mined the brain plant things and Crystalline shards but that was a long time ago. Right now I'm spending the majority of my ED time in AX combat zones in My Krait Mk II, however I took a break from that over the weekend to farm more Guardian mats to eventually get an AX SLF fighter. So I ended up spending the majority of the weekend in the SRV, then I flew back to mine Selenium and Cadmium on Monday, tedious.

I try to break up the monotony by jumping the SRV and trying to get the most hang time, basically stunting. I usually just run into Meteorites that way, plus It's more fun than using the scanner and meticulously scanning everything. I run in to more meteorites basically just screwing off in the SRV than I do the old fashioned way.

Even after trying to make it fun, 3 days in the SRV is still long enough to make me want to sentence my kids to the space version of Ft Leavenworth and blast rocks. But it sounds like I need to visit a Geological site instead, it would speed things up and probably be a lot more interesting, thank you.

Well I'm currently into day #6 (7? I've lost track of time) of the First Great Planetary Expedition so I'm likely to be driving for around a month and I have to say I absolutely love the SRV and think driving it is one of the best things in the game. I'm probably weird tho! 🤪

I totally want to Evel Kneival that canyon in your sig right now. Yes the physics are very well done, I agree, and once planets are more populated with things to do and see, I think it will get better.

My only real gripe with the SRV is how it spins out a lot on low g world's, and that most of the stuff to do on planets, is on low g world's. Lol

The SRV drives so much better on 0.5+g.

You can sell it from the station UI.

SRV prospecting isn't mining per se.
It's looking for materials which are used mainly for engineering, not to sell.

You have to sell them in the Commodity Market under Starport Services

Off topic, but I'll answer this point: Your refinery stores partially refined stuff. When the stuff hits 100% it becomes one ton of cargo in the cargo hold. So your refinery can easily hold a lot of 'less than 100%' stuff until you either find some more, or you dump it, or you get shot down.

When your cargo bay is full, the mined cargo then begins to fill up the refinery until it too is full. When you sell your cargo, as it empties, the refinery makes the 100% stuff available to sell also, as it is transferred to the cargo hold.

I hope this helps you.

Now ..... back on topic .... the SRV is great, whatever you want to do with it, from shooting rocks, to driving the entire circumference of a planet. It's the closest thing we have to walking alone on a planet surface at present ..... until Legs.

Yes, but quality of life wise, the new detailed surface scanning makes this far more approachable than before. Which indeed, was really quite brutal.

I like the SRV as well however I wish they had more than one model. It doesn't make sense to me that when you buy an SRV hanger you get a selection to actually add an SRV to it as if you would want just the hanger in your ship. It should come with the SRVs and since there's only one model why do they ask you to pick which one you want?

The lack of control on the SRV on low-gravity planets seems to be worse as you start approaching your target. It's much better to drive the SRV backwards than forward which doesn't really make a lot of sense. Just a smallest amount of throttle sometimes causes the back end to come completely around and no matter what you do it seems as if SRV itself is refusing to go towards your target.

Also, for a low-gravity planet the SRV has an unusually difficult time climbing steep gradient. Because of that there seems to be a contradiction. The contradiction is that although the SRV has control issues based on the lack of gravity it seems to have full gravitational effect where climbing is concerned. It doesn't seem any easier to climb a steep gradient on a low-G planet than it does on a high-G planet. For that reason I'm not sure why the difficulty exist in the first place. Is there a torque to weight ratio problem on the SRV at certain angles? If so shouldn't that change on lower G planets so that the SRV on a zero-g planet should have zero problem climbing a gradient as it's not technically putting any more weight on the SRV? The thrusters on the wheel should still be forcing the SRV into the surface not towards the core of the planet. No?

Could someone please provide the system that has the geological site with so many G4 materials?

Thanks

I just scanned my home system and went to a landable planet, opened the DSS and fired a few probes to get it 100% mapped and instantly found 20 geological sites. I flew from site to site collecting Selenium, Vandium, Polonium and so on. I think they are everywhere really.
----

So I had an idea over the weekend regarding the SRV. Why can't engineer it too? What if we could have better weapons, better tires/traction, even Tank treads maybe, how about a long range scanner, and increased cargo capacity?

I love Elite, I do, in fact, I love most of the activities in this game, but guys, seriously, mining rocks planet side in the SRV is an absolute snooze fest. I have literally woken up many times with my SRV at a standstill with no idea how long I've been asleep.

I stopped doing the general SRV grinding after I found how much easier it was to go to the geological POI's and collect mats there.

Once you unlock an engineer and you upgrade any module to G5, you should be able to buy the mats required to upgrade that module each and every time you want to. Having you go back over and over again to upgrade more modules using the exact same game play and mechanics is tedious and boring. I get the initial need to work for it, but the sheer number of hours spent trying to find materials to upgrade yet another ship almost makes you not want another ship. Instead you should want another ship, you should want to upgrade all the modules and experiment with everything without spending so much time farming mats. There are so many ways to farm credits that it makes no sense that you cannot buy mats after your initiation into the engineering world and G5 level.

So much good in this post. YES! I have no interest in new ships because I can't engineer the ones I have because I won't drive that accursed buggy and shoot at rocks. NO.

I remember how much fun and anticipation I had before engineers, as I'd buy each new tier of ship till I got my anaconda. Once engineers came out, it was over. I think I managed to engineer one FSD on maybe my python and maybe a few weapons on some ship before I gave up. I have the cash in the bank to buy the new ships that have been released since I left but I have zero interest in doing so because it's just more tedious work to engineer them.

I know about finding geological sites but there are only a few needle crystals at any given site. Those have G4 mats. Selenium is still dropping as G2 mat from crystalline fragments or shards or whatever they are called, but they are G4 mats.

Someone said there's a planet that has mostly G4 mats, so heavy needle crystal formations. Seems odd but I guess anything is possible. I just wanted to know where it was. I swear I'll replant seeds before I leave.
