Looking to take the VR plunge

Done some reading and I think the rift is the way to go, if there's something better, just say.

Can you see a digital representation of your hands? I use a warthog with cougar mfd...I can't imagine you can see any of this, so is everything done by touch?

I had the ps4 vr (until a cat hurled on the control box) and while i found it clunky it did a great job of showing you a digital representation of the controller in your hands, regardless of where you moved it...it was quite impressive.

I just got the Rift, and have loved it so far. The sound from the headset is good, and the view fantastic from the Asp Explorer cockpit. Planets are big... No, your hands don't really do anything unless I assume you use the Touch controllers. There seem to be a default setting for that among the bindings, but I haven't tried it, am happily using the X-56 and the hands have always moved when you move the throttle etc. The headset is comfortable enough, and it doesn't take too much work to fit it for glasses.

Of course, I've had a bit of a malarkey with getting the game set up for VR. Apparently you need to uninstall the old version, then "purchase" and reinstall via the Oculus Store. Before doing that, get the Oculus Partner Key from the Frontier store, and redeem it. I did that after the fact, which means I now purchased the game twice while still only have one account. I have asked Oculus for a refund (for the game), but this means I will be out of commission for up to 5 days while they process the refund and I can go do the whole thing again in hopefully the right order.

Of course I could reinstall the flat version of the game, but it is hard to go back!

If you're playing a game with hands of some sort - yes, you can usually "see" your hands. In Elite, you'll see your in-game hands moving with the flight stick and throttle. You won't see your hands reaching out toward your mfd though, unfortunately. Nearly everything I do in-game, is controllable from HOTAS. Voice Attack is also a great add-on, if you're into that sort of thing.

Yes, you can see your hands when you look at them and they do mimic what you are doing to an extent.

As for recommendations re which one, I have the Rift and have no problems with it but Pimax seems to be the choice of many at the moment.

EDIT: adding a couple more points that just occur to me:
  1. If you have a fleet of ships, try them out as the cockpit experience adds to the character of each ship (the Sidewinder is cramped :))
  2. When SRV driving, going slow is the best approach to avoid motion sickness
  3. Don't play with hangover. I am fortunate that my bathroom was only a few metres away
  4. The VR experience is just breathtaking in this game (IMO)
  5. VoiceAttack is recommended - actually I would argue a necessity ;)

So im guessing that you cant see the buttons on the hotas, meaning you'd best memorize everything, it's location, and how to reach it without seeing it, would that be a correct assumption?

Sysmon...what's this malarkey?? You literally stopped me in my tracks, i was just about to confirm purchase. I play thru steam, is that a problem?

You do not need to buy the game again from the Oculus store. I have 3 copies, all work in VR and none came from there.

Huh interesting. Mine would not start up in VR, saw no options for running it in VR until I bought the Oculus Store version.

Nah, but prepare for some fudging the first hour to get it started. I use a WMR set, and had to install a Steam WMR app to connect my headset to steam. With the Rift there are some other hoops. In any case, you can play through steam wont need to repurchase. :)

If your main focus is Elite, then you don't really need room-scale VR. It is fun for games that make use of walk-able space though.

Ohhh hell, sometimes i wonder what i use for a brain...as soon as i read that it made perfect sense. And fuuhhhkkk all that walking around vr stuff, at least for now...this is strictly for elite. So could i just get the vive pro hmd and be fine?

If you're looking at the Vive Pro, be aware that it does not include the lighthouses and controllers. You need to either purchase them separately or purchase the "Starter Kit". I have the Vive(not pro), and really enjoy it. However, If I were going to recommend an HMD for use with Elite, I'd probably suggest something else, just because of the price of the Vive or Vive Pro. YMMV

Edit:
NOTE You need the lighthouses for the Vive HMD to function.

Yeah, just checked amazon and the vive pro starter is twice as much as the rift...and that's significant. What do the lighthouses do?

As the Pimax 5k becomes more and more available (thru ebay and so), there is actually no reason to use anything else. Believe me, once you seen the Pimax field of view, anything else is just disappointing 😎
