Newbie : Pretty lonely in space

Howdy folks. Ive been playing i guess like a month or so now. getting the hang of things and earned enough money trading to buy my first python. But whats nagging at me is I never meet anyone. I mean literally never. not one person ever since i started playing. I know space is big and all, but i gotta say im shocked at how few people are around. I guess im wishing for more player interaction to spice the game up, but then i read on some threads that no one plays online anymore, they all just play in solo so i guess i came to the party too late.

You're in Open, correct? What part of space do you frequent?

As far as I am aware Open is still the most popular mode, but the bubble is pretty big. Unless you are near certain places of interest, you'll only rarely come across other CMDRs.

You might be surprised at how many CMDR's you've encountered and just didn't notice.

Open the comms panel and take a look at the 2nd, or maybe 3rd, tab to the left. It will show you who you've run across.

I have to go in there about once a week and clear, what usually, is a very long list that runs 20 to 50 long, out.

My home system is within 30 LY of Sol.

according to my comms panel I haven't run into another player since board flipping was nerfed.

OKAY... It is the 4th tab from the left on the comms panel - the one that looks like a clock - that shows contacts. Just checked mine. Over the past week just playing for an hour or two a day I'v run into 49 commanders. Had zero interaction with any of them.

I believe that is all about location. I hang out within 30LY of Sol. I Don't ever go there but...

Agree, I have only been playing for about two weeks and I see them in the comms as well. Not looking for anyone myself still trying to find descent place to mine or I just suck at it- not sure yet lol.

Best way to find good mining sites for what you are looking for is here: eddb.io
Great tool!

True, with that said I am still trying to figure out the "Goal" of of the game other than being ELITE in all catagories. So I guess I am looking to have enough to buy the right ship to reach the things needed for the engineers wants- Meta alloy as an example is so far away I can't reach it at the moment. I was hoping that mining the right stuff would yield enough to buy the bigger ships, currently I use the T7 to take Boom deliveries to bases for 5-7mil per run with multipart deliveries to the same system but different basses and then return the items(from a different system) back to the first place of what they needed before I left(Like a tri-run). The T7 is also my mining ship with lots of cargo space after everything else you need. Mining is part of the game so I want to be good at it.
My problem is time to research all the aspects of the game, as an example I no idea what the synthesis in panel 4 is? lol see what I mean- no time.

Based on your location and time window of your play session OP, it can vary where how many other players are around in open. Some suggestion to come across other players could be travelling to the popular lore systems mentioned in the codex, or powerplay headquarter systems. You could also try joining a hosted multi-crew session where you can often find other players in your p2p time and location range to add to your friendly contacts. Then the game will message you if they are online and what mode they are playing in. The average number of active players in the game as a whole is still decent compared to the entire ED history where the DW2 Jan. launch was the largest combined concurrent player count activity as well as a larger effort than many other mmo games. It could be a cyclical low now, but it's only cyclical and will resurge as usual especially with the April 23rd update.

Welcome to the club, War Eagle.
Goals? IMO with the exception of Power Play there are really no fixed/formal goals in ED. You get to decide what you want to do, how to do it and then do it.

Some may call doing missions goals. They may have a point. For me, missions are a means to an end and a way to go places and do things you might not otherwise do. Maybe they're a micro goal.

For most the goal is getting the best ship and/or maybe all the ships they can. There are a ton of ways to accomplish that - how you do it is up to you.

For many their primary goal is achieving Elite status in Exploration, Trading or Combat or getting Elite in all 3.

Power Play? Doesn't have a good rep in general but I imagine that it appeals to some and has it's attractions. I'd bet 95% of ED players have tried it and 80% of those dropped it - or else they're just not talking about it.

Point is: be cognizant that any goal short or long term you set in ED is going to involve some grind. Some don't mind it, some even like it and some hate it.

Good luck to you.

I keep seeing "Powerplay" in the forum but I have no idea what that is unless - in Galaxy view if you click on the second section it shows power of fictional characters vying for power in different parts of the galaxy other that I don't know what that is. I did a search for power play pvp and ...forgot the other one but it really didn't give an answer.

For some, the blackness of space is their calling, so they leave the bubble in search of riches and new vista's. For those new to the game, griefers and gankers ruin their first experience and scare them off to Solo or Private Groups. For others, playing Solo by themselves, they can experience the game without human interruption. Others like the far outback of Colonia and make their home there. There will always be some who play in open who are welcoming to new players, but are busy with their own goals of trading to stop and mentor a new player. For me, I have been playing now for almost five years and have met many new and friendly players in Open, but for tasks like profit, I play in a Private Group. I don't engage in Combat at all because I don't agree with killing for profit or sport, even in a game. If I'm out in the black, far from the bubble, I play open because those I meet are not interested in combat, ganking or griefing, but are fellow explorers out to see the sights. I play in Private Groups for group goals, like Canonn, who's primary goal is dicovering the source of the Thagroid's and peaceful interactions and communications. It's your choice how you play and it's unfortunate Open gets a bad rap here from those who have had a bad experience from other players who are set on ruining another players experience, and for that reason, drives them out of this mode.

The next update will focus on the New User Experience and you might have a better experience with the game once it is released. I know many will now criticize a-lot of what I have said, but it is important that you find your own style of play and try not to be disheartened by those who might ruin your gamplay with their own twisted agenda.

o7 and keep a positive attitude while you learn the game.
I played OGame for years, the large and powerful alliances would do the same thing but they ran into someone who would fight back with me :) I don't let that stuff bother me at all. I stopped at expert in combat because I wanted to try all of the game- I'm already good at that lol. I just would like to find the story of the game so I could understand all of it from the aliens to the political struggles of the factions. I do love the graphics, world generation is awesome and I understand much of the data came from NASA- not sure about that- they really don't know that much haha.

Everybody plays online that is because there is no offline version of the game, Solo Private Group and Open all use the one model of the galaxy but limit the number of players you could meet none in solo etc. A further restriction on potential meetings is that you can only meet players using the same platform to play.

Now there are hundreds of players out on an expedition towards the opposite side of the galaxy, but even when everybody is playing in the main region known as the bubble you won't meet many as there are many more places to be than people, your best chances over than arranging a meeting are engineers bases and other famous locations.

Last time I checked I hadn't encountered another player in weeks.

When the new format Community Goals get under way, it will bring many commanders into one system in Open. But be careful ..... it's dangerous out there 😬

PS4 is crazy-empty this weekend. Even the griefers are nowhere to be found! There were two boring people at Shinrarta and one boring person at Deciat, and that's it...

The game's dead, I tell you, DEAD! Time to practice my Fortnite dances.

I run a squadron that you're more than welcome in. It's a community-focused squadron, with an interest in giving everyone as much freedom to find their own style as possible, whilst also providing a community through weekend open-only operations that everyone contributes too. We're still just getting off the ground, but feel free to hit me up in-game, or on discord using the link in this post:

We welcome anyone and everyone, regardless of playstyle.
