Please give me an idiots guide to which faction I should choose

Pledge allegiance to no one.
Make money.
Do anything you wanna do.
Make more money.
Be truly independent.
Make even more money.
Have no political conscience.
Make mega money.
All States are control.
Be a hippy in space.
Tune in, turn on, drop out.
Make super mega money.

Man I gotta stop drinking. Repeat after me, 'this is not real life'.

Sorry, I thought I was clear by starting out with "I may be entirely off track, but this is my own understanding". Also, I figured it would be easier to draw parallels to today's political systems than to use complicated ideological terminology. I had no intention of offense or to derail the thread.

I thought your post was rather good - I'd disagree here and there, but another interesting approach and not offensive at all.

Anyway - I wouldn't base my choice on their ideology or if it's related to my rl convictions, but just purely on what I think will be the most enjoyable to me.

I mainly plan to explore, so not going to get involved into too many conflicts between the factions myself, but I will sell my exploration data to the empire most likely.

Reasons? Well - I love the imperial aesthethics better, I like the fact that very few things are illegal in the empire [ref: Newsletter 22] and I think engaging in the slavery business could be a lot of fun from a gameplay perspective.

Moreover, be it Star Wars, Star Trek, Wing Commander, Eve or whatever SciFi using similar setups, I always end up sympathizing with the empires.

Go Alliance, because they're a whole bunch of factions mixed. You can find your own space in there.
Why would you do that?

The Alliance seems like the least dirty option at the moment, but I suspect it may be that they have very few rules at all, and some truly despicable worlds and mini-empires are members without anybody much raising a stink about it.

I was planning to go for the Federation or the Alliance...but the Empire has some pretty solid arguments...

Since every car i ever owned was black, my motorcycles were black and about 90% of the clothes in my wardrobe are black... this cockpit hurts my eyes ;)

Interesting - I haven't privately worn anything that's not black in 25 years, my furniture and my appartments walls are black and I dislike apple, but I can't wait to see the imperial clippers cockpits curves using the rift.

Well - maybe it's because I play for escapism (but on the other hand, I would probably pay another 13 € to have a black clipper interior ;)).

well, it could have been pink ;)

Empire ftw! Steal your enemies cargo and capture them as well. After that just sell them as slaves HAHAHA!

I was under the impression that Imperials, despite supporting slavery, had much more decency than slave traders, and had quite strict laws that precisely define what a slave is, and what a slave isn't.

I don't think you'll be able to do that. Better go independant.

If you can buy all faction ships aftermarket (secondhand, don't know if it is a thing)... why join a faction? Don't be a square, be a freebooter !

you're taking this way to serious :)

Nah, I think the RP aspect is really cool. Personally I've never taken a mission to help the fedscum. They seem like everything I dislike about my own country while pretending to uphold the values I cherish. Plus, haven't you seen the missions for murdering civilians? Interesting that they're never for killing civies in Fed space huh?

For myself, the independent systems will be my refuge, though I doubt I'll give allegiance to any faction. But I'll hide out in Alliance space after scourging the Federal systems, and pirating the Imperials :) Although I might give the Imperials some slack, their honest about what they are, and they have style!

The role playing and lore really fill out the sandbox universe for me. Don't knock it till you try it :)

I'm sure we'll find that there is something seriously wrong with the Alliance as well. Either that or they are very weak, with little to offer.

yeah you're probably right. We know there is some in fighting and rivalry within the alliance and i don't think they are as cohesive ororganised as the feds or imps. what that will mean in gameplay terms i dont know.
i'm expecting indie systems to be more marginal around fed and imp space rather than a core of territory as with the feds and imps, could easily be wrong about that though.

Indeed. It is important to remember that without participants, there will be no story worth writing home about. So we have to create our own saga, or there will be a rather dull tale of passivity in the end. :D

In RL terms.

The Federation is America

The Empire is China

The Alliance is the European Union.

Culturally, politically and Ideologically speaking.

Choose your poison.

You could of gather a group of guys around you and set up your own
and take over the others

if player reaction in game can decide the raise or fall of those set up by
ED then the code should work also for you ,
could be interesting to find out

I like Empire. Their ships look like they are made by Apple.

You want what? BIGGER engines?? - Sorry, that hull is sealed for life.

What do you mean, you don't like that pale grey on white HUD? ALL Empire ships have that particularly cool combination...:cool:

You want FIXED lasers:eek: All Empire weapons are gimballed as a design choice. For your information, they are far easier to aim. No, I'll grant you they aren't as powerful - but they're much easier to use.

Right, one Empire Sidewinder 6, that'll be 10,000,000 credits, please.

Okay. We'll see you next year when you trade in: the all-new Empire Eaglet will be available, some time in Jobsuary. Yes, from Earth, that's where the Empire store happens to be situated. Oh, and remember, you can't voyage beyond Empire space. Why not? Why would you want to? It's just Empire policy, don't worry about it...

Fly safe, commander
