Well, I went through with the save wipe.

Now, ignoring the many bugs that currently exist, I would like to focus on the new player experience. It's safe to say that I may be one of the most experienced players to have gone through today's new player experience. This gives me an interesting perspective.

First, CMDR creation. There's a lot more to it now. First, you choose a name. And you also have to choose which body type to use. Male/female. You then choose a starter package. Once you've chosen your starter package, you are asked to name your ship, and newly introduced today, you can give your ship a custom ID during CMDR creation as well. You then choose which system to start in. Random Federal System is no more. You either start in Asellus Primus, LHS 3447 or whatever the new district is called. Then, and this is the interesting part, you are only given the option to choose Open to begin your career. (I'm curious to see how that's handled on consoles, where you have to pay for online access)

Next, the new modules. They work admirably. Automatic take-off is a breeze, and the learning curve to use the new SC assist is minimal. Very well done IMO.

Missions. Missions in the new district are very basic. Biggest amount of cargo I see to be moved is 6t, and the other missions are all easily completed in a Sidewinder. Mining missions included.

Outfitting and shipyard. The only five ships I've seen on sale are the Sidewinder, Eagle, Hauler, Adder & Viper Mk III. Outfitting, I've only seen up to D-rated modules. Oh, and there seems to be no FSDIs available in any of the district stations. So those guys who made suggestions about wiping save and never leaving the district? Well technically, if you're clever, you can play forever in the District. But to get that FSDI needed to gank n00bs? You have to lock yourself out of the District, meaning you can't gank those n00bs. Well played FD, I applaud this. Too many people got exploded within minutes, forever damaging their view of the game. A more secure starter zone was direly needed, and this zone has done it, at least from a PvP perspective. You can still get interdicted by NPCs in these systems.

In all, I'm thoroughly impressed by the new new player experience. FD did do a good job on this, at least.

Have you tried leaving the starter zone prior to ranking up, buying an interdictor, then going back to the zone? Just asking...

you should still be able to gank in a RES nav beacon or station....but that does limit a huge gank opportunity.

the one "oversight" I see is that pvp wins do not increase rank of any kind. that means you could potentially hang out in noobland indefinitely doing nothing buy ganking and never get kicked out. sure you'd have to do it in a e rated sidewinder but an experienced pilot could still wreak some serious havoc especially against new players. the solution would of course be have pvp kills increase your combat rank like any other kills.

Not really, you can buy a 1E interdictor for peanuts
Indeed, but as far as I can tell, you literally cannot buy one within the new district. I suppose you could buy a 1E... But certainly, the way credits are earned in this game, it'll be impossible to get your ship barely above stock and still retain access.

I would be utterly shocked if there is anyone petty and stupid enough to start a new game, then use this extremely limited system, with no interdictor, just to gank noobs.
Noob ganking was already a rare thing to happen before this update.

By the way, great job Unikorn. You should actually try to gank some noobs to see how hard it is. Don't kill them but at least fire some shots.

I will also say this: In this current stage of the game, where there are an ever-increasing number of module types, I think the two extra slots for small ships were essential.

Once a new CMDR is comfortable, he has the option to remove those flight aids, and swap them out for more specific utility such as limpets, or refineries. And honestly, on various Discords and other communities, I heard this a lot: "The Sidewinder doesn't have enough slots." TBH I completely agree with that sentiment, in regards to the four slot model. The new six slot is a formidable ship, however. Now all ships can be outfitted to perform at least one role in its fullest capacity. This is a good thing.

I WISH you were right but my noob experience would disagree. I didn't spend a lot of time in Open (it was usually by accident) but there was no shortage of gankers (most of them I suspect were only slightly more experienced than I was) and many of them would then post about how they were killing noobs as a sort of tantrum because they were dissatisfied with the game for one reason or another.

I would also posit that there are far worse people on the internet than we'd both like to believe. Tolls gonna troll.

I myself have 4 accounts (well my wife is using one of them)....accounts are cheap. And some people will do anything for attention.

I was surprised at how many options the wife had when we started her CMDR a few days ago.

Might just clear her save, and have her give the new system a go lol.

My first impression on a reset save is positive.
Stations very busy so just had auto-undock sit me in a queue for 5mins until I got a trespass warning. So taking control back was easy and a quick exit. Mightn't be quite as simple for a real new player though. Of course it might be less crowded after a couple of days.

You almost convince me that actually care about the new player experience! Almost... It does sound like some actual thought went into it imo. Which is an achievement in itself given that don't exactly seem to care about Ganking or even seal clubbing for that matter. If they did, the C&P system would be somewhat more effective than it is! Maybe thought this was an easy out with minimal coding required.

Fascinating!
