Ability to Send Ships to Stations You Aren't Currently At

I know I'm by far not the first to suggest this, but it seems that it would be very much in keeping with the simulation if we had the ability to send a ship to a station we've been to before, but aren't at currently. There are numerous situations in which this would be very useful, and it doesn't seem to me that it would break any important game mechanics. Please consider it!
 
Has been suggested many times. Would be awesome. It would so much change the game. Now you now hurry to your destination, then have a ship or equipment sent after you and have to take a break and do something different than what you planed to do. Which in many cases means "log off, play later".

If you could sent a ship or equipment ahead, you could simply travel a bit slower. Do some exploration, have fun. When you arrive, everything you want is already there. No interruption of your gaming session. It would really be a welcome upgrade.

Why? Go back and think about how this worked before we have ship transfers, and think how it worked back then... you had to fly our desired ship everywhere...

If you pay to ship a ship to X station, then change your mind, sorry.

I think its a great idea. Same goes for modules.
 
I'd love this.
Right now, I usually log off after transferring the ship TO the station I am at.

Usually, it's because I arrive in my stripped down Asp (to minimize travel time) which is not suitable for much.
 
Make it an option only avaliable in Open and have the ship avaliable for free to other commanders once it arrive at a station......gotta add some risk to it right?
 
I would love to see a large transporter carrier arrive and drop them off. And see them being moved into the station

That would be awesome. But it's much more code. I mean, one part is:
  • Go to shipyard, have new option "send ship".
  • When send ship is selected, open the galaxy map, allow people to work through it to a station of their choice. Add the option "send ship to this station" to the menu.

Considering what they did with the trading screen and the galaxy map, i dare to say that they could also implement this. It's along the same line. It is some work to do, but i think a big part of it already is present.

On a carrier to move them, that's a whole new package of things to do.
  • All the codes to have megaships jump into an instance.
  • Registering all ships slated for transfer.
  • Animating the transfer between station and the megaship.
  • Planing and timing the complete trip of the megaship, including making sure that they can be seen in the systems on the way.
  • Some more things which can easily come to mind.

That's all in -addition- to the interface changes. And some of it, at least according to my understanding, may collide with how the instancing of the game works.

So while it would be nice to have, i think that the effort outweights the benefit. I'd rather have FD work on some other things instead, which have more direct impact to gameplay. Thus i'd rather take the "send ships ahead" option, which for reasons stated above would be an awesome improvement, then improve other things and let the ship carriers travel unseen.

Agreed, the core basic functionality of sending a ship ahead is the important thing here, not making the entire transaction visible (especially when owner probably isn't even in or seeing their ship).

I agree. Fly your ship. That is what this game is all about.
Email your vette or fdl to where ever and await for explorers to appear during events or any public event.

This thread needs a bump.

I LOVE flying different ships. I don't dislike the distances involved in the game or the time spent flying to things deep within a system even.

That being said, my combat ships have horrible jump range and aren't fitted with a fuel scoop. After seeking input here, I've taken to using my DBX to get to the system where I plan to participate in combat (or the nearest system with a shipyard in some cases) and then transfer my combat ship once I arrive. This leads to a wait.

i'm actually even okay with the wait, I generally plan ahead and am doing this right before I plan to log out for the day....but I think it would be pretty sweet if I could start the transfer from my origin station rather than upon arrival. Honestly, I find it rather immersion-breaking that I can't.

The game already seems to imply we can't communicate in real time across the vastness of space, so how exactly am I arranging a transfer from a station far away? It makes more sense, to me, to do the arrangements from where the ship being transferred actually is currently. i.e. doing the transfer at the from point rather than the to.
