FDL Dirty Drives 5A vs 5B

I have two drives in storage, both G5 DD. One is 5A and the other 5B. On the FDL the 5B gets 510m/s boost and better thruster performance on turns. It also runs cooler than the 5A. The 5A only gets about 440m/s boost even though it's G5 rated (I am sure it is, even though my pinned blueprint disappeared yesterday as soon as I pinned a BP from The Dweller for PD).

Question:
Is it possible my 5B drive is grandfathered from the old days and has a good roll vs the 5A drive? I couldn't believe I dropped so much in performance swapping to a higher grade drive that's also DD G5. I am not sure what special effect it has.

I can post the specs unless someone can say that it's not uncommon for rolled G5 DDs to have that much better performance than contemporary G5 drives of a higher grade.

510m/s from a 5B drive is certainly possible nowadays, depending on how heavy the FDL is.

I have no idea how you're only getting 440m/s from the 5A, though. Possibilities I can think of:
- it's actually a 4A
- it's actually a 5A Reinforced
- it's an incredibly bad legacy mod on the 5A

A set of DD5 Drag Drives will get a ~500 ton FDL to ~560m/s and will result in better acceleration and rotational performance than any drives that provide a lower speed.

Current drive BPs are significantly better than almost anything that could be rolled under the old system. Even if you have a one in a million legacy roll with a 141% optimal multiplier and a +5% to optimal mass, new DD5 Drag Drives will be faster in almost all circumstances.

Looks like I have only 113% optimal mass on the 5A. The 5B is at 135% so not a "god" roll. I'm not even sure how/why I ever engineered a B rated drive. It's possible I already stole the original 5A DD G5 for another build and engineered this one just enough to be serviceable. I usually use the remote engineering function to see what level I have the modules engineered to since keeping up with the specs is a bit cumbersome. There's probably some obvious spec that I am missing though, that tells me exactly what level of engineering I have without using the remote engineer tab. It sucks when your BP vanishes.

Thanks for the input.

You can even select "modifications" from the menu to the right when you select the module in outfitting, that shows you the engineering details.

Power or integrity.

The number of nut icons on the picture of the module in outfitting?

I typically won't engineer anything short of A rated modules but when Engineering first was introduced I did catch myself engineering some trash modules before I realized it.

I only see one "nut" symbol in "outfitting" however the remote engineering tab shows the level I have at least started engineering to, but as I said the BP vanished. I since went back to Prof Palin and it gave the option to "unpin" it as if it was still pinned, but I looked at several ships and the "engines" BP did not show up. I unpinned and repinned and now it's there.

I just wiped the 5A drive and started over on it. All good now to G5.

I have seen the details but didn't see the level and I am not "up to speed" (pun) on the different numerical values for each level.

Ahh, I see what you're asking for. You want to see where the progress bar is at within the level at which you have engineered it up to because it's not yet max for that grade and you don't know what is best for that grade. My bad!
Huh, I don't know how to see that either without the blueprint being select either at the engineer or remote engineering...hopefully someone here can offer advice if there is a way.

What I'd do is click my ship name in EDMC to open it automatically in Coriolis and then I could look there at the engineering details of the module (it shows where the ship is at and lists what is "best" for the grade).

Sort of. I would like to see a number inside the "nut" symbol in the "stored" or "outfitting" selection tabs. Instead of having 5 nuts, have 1 with the number 5. Without the BP knowing where I am withing a specific level is futile. I would like to be able to look at stored modules and see engineering levels so I can pick the one I want. I know there's a lot of information there that I simply haven't mentally parsed properly though, so no need to dumb it down of me. I can just learn the ropes more.

Fyi, "converting" the module will save you mats as opposed to "wiping" the modification and starting over.
You'll typically start at ~G4 for a legacy G5, and may see an improvement without doing anything else.
