Can the forum moderators please dowse this place in vinegar?

Whilst everyone has a right to point out flaws and issues with the game, otherwise how will the developers know these problems exist, I do think people should think first about how they go about conveying them.

A well reasoned post with facts is more likely to be read thoroughly and acted upon than posts with comments like "The developers are incompetent", "The developers don't what they are doing" etc. Just think about how you want to be treated when spoken to when writing a post pointing out a problem with the game.

Yep, as soon as people asking "why don't they talk to us" say things like "they should grow thicker skins" or "they clearly don't play their own game" they've answered their own question.

This one is hilarious :ROFLMAO:

I'm a little bit of a dev myself, and if I was told I could make up for my perceive lack of engagement by talking to my customers, I would flip them a 🐦 instead.
Devs working in the gaming industry don't build what they want, nor what their customers want. Yet they do take the blame for everything that makes it to production. No wonder they are behind closed doors and you never see them around here.
Sorry, couldn't resist :p :

Well that's why they have community managers. Thing is, if you look at http://www.elitedevtracker.com and filter for twitter you'll either get praise for the game or completely unrelated posts. If you filter for the forums you'll usually get 5-7 posts per week, even when the forums are burning.
Don't get me wrong, I am sure the CM team is doing a pretty good job at the stuff they are being told to do, like creating live streams and hype the game in social media. They also seem like very nice people. I'd just wish they would communicate more about the actual game (and the problems that come with it).

Live streams = Talking heads selling vapour-ware. How anyone can come onto a live stream and talk about the future when the past is so histocially dismal in their failure to fix transient bugs and deliver what they promised. The most farcial part of it is... Some people here believe it...

Reason I ask them to do that is I am getting fed up of all the salt and want something to neutralise it. Yes this might sound like a click-baity title, but it is genuinely frustrating to come in here and see nothing but vitriol and salt.

You only have to put a small hardcore group of poisonous, insulting, persistent, salty forum whiners on ignore and the forum becomes a completely different experience.
There is only a handful (or perhaps two) that keep whining and complaining in ways that are utterly destructive, negative and insulting, and add nothing to the forums.
You won't miss anything if you put these poisoners on ignore. You will recognize them quite easily if you visit here regularly.

Seems like the best response to the last criticism would be to have somebody from FDev on a livestream who can play the game competently.

I've always though it'd make livestreams a more informative experience if they could reliably demonstrate the things they're talking about and it'd allow Will to make a better job of presenting the streams and interviewing the guests.
At the end of the day, if there's somebody who works as, say, a coder who is a competent ED player, having to pay them a couple of hours overtime in order to participate in a stream shouldn't be a big deal for a company who, apparently, think it's worthwhile to employ people like Will and Sally in a full-time role.

Perhaps we need 'having a moan' and 'not having a moan' sub-forums within DD.

Also, and more seriously, I think the point about age groups is a valid one. And not just because most of us are a different generation with a different mindset. So many folk here have other things to be getting on with, family, work, general responsibilities, established hobbies, whatever. Hell, I'm writing this whilst I'm supposedly at work, because a bunch of image files are processing and I can't do anything until they're done. A few hours here and there to play a game can be a big deal, far more so than for a kid who spends 10 hours a day in front of the screen spending his parents' money, and how many of us want to blow that few hours watching a stream about new updates?

So yeah, if FD would consider just talking to us a bit more, it would help. And then we can get back to our few hours.

Oh, my process has ticked past 50%, best start thinking about doing work again.

I suppose it depends on your interptetation of competent? Some would insist it was a 'dyed-in-the-wool' PvP'er, others a trader, others yet a PP/BGS player, or even an explorer, forgive any other 'disciplines I may have missed.
It is way too easy to criticise those who do not do things in a way we do, so to be able to fulfil such a role may be a little difficult :)

Im ashamed to admit this has bothered me as well over the years.. but that's not entirely true.

Steve Kirby can play well, I think designer Adam and Dav can as well (the rest of em scream we're only here because we're getting paid can't wait to get to the pub).

Nah, that's a straw-man.

Somebody who's a competent ED player will be familiar enough with every aspect of the game to avoid making rookie errors, at least.

If FDev don't have somebody (or, hopefully, multiple somebodies) on the staff who meet that standard, I'd say the whole "don't play their own game" thing IS actually a valid criticism and concern.

So - a straw-man because I questioned something?
Thanks :)

That might be true - and, to be fair, if I was sat on a couch attempting to play ED with a gamepad, I'd probably be hopeless at it - but doesn't that just highlight the need to have somebody who's both capable and equipped to play the game competently involved in livestreams, even if they're off-screen somewhere, just quietly doing their thing?

No.

A straw-man because you tried to refute the suggestion that a competent ED player should be involved by suggesting that a competent person might no BE a competent person and that being competent is a subjective thing.

Incorrect - my comment indicated that there are too many interpretations over competent with regard to the way any individual player considers play. I did not disagree with the concept, which is excellent :)
