Remove the Honk

Instead of holding a button for 5 seconds and sitting there.

Suggestion
-Number of bodies and signals reveal automatically when entering system
-FSS bar reveal automatically when entering FSS mod
-FSS mode available while ship throttle is engaged
-No honk sound!

That is all. Please consider. thx

You get a (reasonably) substantial payout for discovering the stars in a system and all you have to do to get it is hold one button down for 5 seconds. I don't think this is too much to ask and would not be in favour of removing it and automatically getting the reward for doing nothing.

There are people out there who don't actually want to discover anything in the system except the main star, yes it seems strange but once you have been on the forums long enough you will see everything. Your suggestion would remove these peoples option to not "honk" the system.

Fine..
But can we at least have an option in the menus to toggle on/off the honk sound? ;)

I would not mind a different sound.
Perhaps a sonar like ping, with a nice echo would be appropriate.

Or FDev might give us the option to choose different sounds.
They could even sell sounds for a dollar per sound at the store. I would definitely buy some.
For example I would like there to be a difference between my Imperial ships and the rest of my ships.

That would work. But it's not very realistic.
The analysis module is not a pulse of any sorts.
It simply analyses light and radio sources.
There is no reason for it to make allot of sound.

LOL, as far as realism is concerned... to me that is not really a convincing argument given the fact that this is a game.
I like hearing a sound, just... the honk makes me cringe a bit everytime I hear it.
In the game we have technology generating sound for us pertaining to events outside the ship.
The sound would just signal the activity that is going on.
Most of the things in the game require suspension of disbelief anyway. Realism has only a limited application in the game.

I don't mind the honk sound, but I wouldn't mind a toggle to automatically trigger the honk upon entry into every star system.

If you do it right you can scoop fuel as well as honk. So No to your idea.

I have to say No. See you are looking at if I don't have to honk and a few thousands jumps to systems you get credit and Elite Exploration. Without even thinking about it. Now, do you see it would make Elite Exploration in Brainless action.

Price is Right "game over, you lose" would be better, when there's only the main star in the system.

What about for stars you can’t scoop from?

And on that line of thought, if FDev had designed the fuel scoop the same way as the Discovery Scanner, you would be required to manually hold a button to fuel scoop when in range of a suitable star.

No one complains about the fuels scoop activating automatically - why should the Honk be any different?

I’ve got news for you - the honk already is.

Let’s put it another way - when out exploring, can you describe a scenario where you wouldn't want to trigger the honk upon entering a system?

Whilst I kinda agree, we could apply this concept to a number of other things that we have to press buttons for:

1. Requesting permission to dock
2. Handing in bounties and UC data
3. Completing missions
4. Flying to distant bodies in SC

I'm not sure the game would necessarily be better if everything that could be automated was automated.

Hmm...not sure I agree with those. There are very definite reasons why we wouldn't want to automate those actions:

  1. Requesting permission to dock
You could still be in the docking catchment zone (7.5km) and not want to dock if:
    1. You are waiting for another ship (e.g. wingman) to undock.
    2. You are trying to smuggle goods in silently.
    3. You are scanning wakes.
  2. Handing in bounties and UC data
These affect your reputation with the controlling faction, and so you definitely want to have control over which faction you choose to sell these to. I may have docked at a station for quick repairs, but don't want to sell them my UC data.
  3. Completing missions
It's been a while since I completed a mission, so apologies if I've got this wrong, but don't you get to choose your reward when you hand in your mission? Again, if you just want to do a quick dock for repairs and undock again, an automatic mission hand-in where you are required to stop and select a reward for each one would be disruptive. Besides, I feel this functionality wholly belongs in the Mission Board.
