Flipping Frags and the joy of moving on from Multi-Cannons

So this week I made it my task to finally unlock the Colonia engineers. To sit down and finally sort out the random gallimaufry that is my pinned Blueprints, actually work out what blueprints I use most often and ensure I can get the best spread possible between them.

Some were fairly obvious contenders whilst others had been peripheral at best, or utterly unused beyond unlocking for the likes of The Sarge and Zachariah Nemo, apologies chaps. So after a surprisingly quick series of tasks for the Colonia based engineers and some engineering on my fleet out there I pinned what I needed and headed back to the Bubble to confront the mess I’d left behind.
After some bouncing around in a Cobra MkIII I’d managed to pin everything that I use regularly and was left with just our two friends mentioned above to do something with.

Not being interested in engineered limpets it was G5 Cannons or G3 Rails from the Sarge and either a G2 Plasma Accelerator or G5 Frag Cannons from Zach. Having heard much talk of rails and frags I thought I may as well plump for them and if I don’t like them, well, change them for Cannons (and hope they’re very different from Multis) and a PA.

So, having pinned everything else I sat in Nemo Cyber Party Base in the MkIII Cobra I’d been mooching around in with two C1 frag cannons applying Over Charge to both and deciding whether to put Corrosive Shell, Drag, Screening or which combination to go with. Having read a few posts here and on Reddit I went with Corrosive and Screening and headed to the nearest Res site to see if I could even get these on target.

Dropping in I instantly deploy my hardpoints, the Beams pop up like the headlights on the angriest Mazda MX5 and I hear the whirring of the Frag Cannons as they settle themselves below me. Almost immediately I see a FAS flash past my bow and I get behind him for a scan as I can see he’s taking fire from a Viper and an Eagle, Local Security.....I’m hoping. He’s down to one ring and I’m about to take that away with my Beam laser, my KWS is linked to my primary/beams trigger, but those Security boys have that down whilst I dither. So I boost toward him, God love the Cobra’s boost, and when I’m 300M behind him and he’s in the centre of my vision I give my Frag trigger a tap, then quickly another.

For an instant I’m left wondering what had happened. No great crescendo of noise, no violent rocking of my ship and no supernova of light....just some, some...what was that stuff that left my ship, snow? Was I throwing tiny snowballs at my foe? Then amidst my momentary, dare I say it, disappointment he suddenly exploded. Gone. Just a cloud of useful mats for me to bask in, to roll around in like a cat on the warmed patch of carpet by a sunny window. One, maybe two shots from my frags had taken down a FAS in a way my beloved Multi Cannons never would. My personal meta may just have changed, the fact that it may change to the actual meta is less impressive. The other less than impressive aspect is all the mats collecting I’m now going to have to do to change up the hardpoints on my small and medium ships.

Now to try out the rail guns, the seeker missile pack I bought to learn how to use when I unlock the Pack Hounds in a couple more weeks.....and then there’s that Plasma Accelerator I ignored earlier.

What has become of me?

YEAH BWOI!

All my weapons are Alliance Green so it's

BLOWIE ZOWIE G R E E N all over their FSD.
Yeah.

But here's a thing - they're like Shotties - Ya gotta get in close.

So while yer there why not ram it right in?
Yeah now THAT's what I'm talking about.

Go see Selene Jean - The Alliance Girl that gets you H A R D.
Real Hard.

Full Three Splash of Frags and then smack right into their tail pipe.

Ignore that whiner.
Go cash in every time you re-arm for maximum BGS eff3ectiveness.

I dropped my Kumo Burger laughing so hard reading that.

But, would you get the ultimate frag cannon from uncle Zack, the Pacifier? Three on a Krait is succulence.

I threw up a little at the thought of pledging to Hudson to get the Pacifier.

I’m 200 plus weeks with Fat Eddie the Alliance Prime Minister.*

Better dead than Fed.

Judging by the appearance, you won't have to worry about random warthogs or the curious hyena sniffing you. Also, it's doubtful someone will jump on top of you during an engagement and try to bear hug your hull.

On a more positive note, you should be great at collecting space litter.

What's the name on the hull? "Space Cocklebur"? I'd hate to accidentally step on you while barefoot.

This is for larger sizes but same principle applies:
This may be a bit of a surprise, but frag cannons actually have extremely respectable field endurance if you make sure you're using them correctly. If you multiply the single-shot damage by the total ammunition load, you get the following numbers. This is the total damage you can cause with each weapon system before needing to rearm:

Large FIXED multicannon: 3.925 * 2200 = 8635
Large FIXED frag: 4.57 * 12 * 183 = 10035.72 (the 12x multiplier is because each frag shot launches 12 pellets each doing the listed damage)
Huge FIXED multicannon: 4.625 * 2200 =10175

So a large fixed frag does fairly-nearly as much total damage as a huge fixed multicannon, and considerably more than a large fixed multicannon. Now consider that frags get a big DPS boost from high-capacity modding, while multicannons do not. Furthermore fixed frags are fairly practical to use, while fixed multicannons... not as much. Modded and used correctly, a frag cannon will allow you to substantially more total damage than amulticannon, and you'll probably be killing each target more quickly, too. They take more involved flying to make them work to their best, but why make a point of engaging in combat of you don't want to have to try at all?
