What game files can I delete that will be autogenerated on next startup?

SOLVED
  • Elite Dangerous requires UPNP enabled in router even if you do port forwarding manually
  • If you run VirtualBox on the same system as you play Elite, disable the VirtualBox Host-Only adapter

(Original Post follow)
For some reason, after the April patch, I am having a very long game startup period from when I click Play in the launcher (via Steam) until the game window opens. I've posted about this both here and on the issue tracker but it seems I am alone with the problem. So I'm gonna try to delete everything except the actual game files, which I am going to validate after deleting shaders, logs etc

So i am guessing everything in the Logs and PlanetShaders folders, and probably GpuWorkTable.xml + GraphicsConfiguration.xml ? This should be safe, right? Any other files I should include?

Don't do it ;)

Your logs are small and never read by the game. The configuration files you also should not delete, and if you delete GpuWorkTable.xml you have a longer startup, because it will calculate your Graphics Performance with the next start. I don't think your game will start faster, if you delete files.

yeah i know it wont go faster on the first start after i delete stuff, but im hoping subsequent startups will be faster :)

as it stands after the april update, it takes about a minute to get the game window opening, and then still it takes about 10 seconds until the Frontier logo appears.
After this, its smooth sailing as it always was.

Hm - interesting. I play without Steam, purchased the game at Frontier directly. Starting the Launcher takes several seconds, starting the game around 40 seconds (SSD) until the login screen including the server connection is ready. I just tried it. I do not play at this time - too many bugs, lost motivation - but I think this is a good time. You could switch off the planet generation measurement, this speeds it up a bit, but you need to enable it if you update your driver or your graphic hardware.

So this could be a Steam authorization problem, or something like that, if it takes much longer for you. Also, patch or no patch, it never was faster for me, and never became slower.

nah im talking about a minute from i click the Play button until the anything happens and it actually starts loading.
it used to be just a couple of seconds before the update. im also on SSD.
shader and planet generation takes just a couple of seconds unless ive updated drivers.

can't say im bothered by too many bugs right now, except the FSS reorientation bug, it drives me mad.

maybe i should just uninstall-reinstall

I would suggest a router reset........................….
I would back up control if uninstalling everything unless your gona rebind all from scratch

have you tried just reinstalling the latest gpu driver for your card too? (utilizing the packages clean install option)
just in case try temp disabling firewall anti virus just to rule them out too
also if you have one I would try connecting via a vpn as an alternative means of connection to the servers just as a test

What is a "long time" a long time is not an indication of an interval.

Next Open EDlaunch.exe and logout your machine after that close the launcher completely then reopen it through steam.

If you still have issues after that Verify your file integrity through steam. You might also try defragmenting your hard drive where ED is located, run a virus scan and even Ctrl+Shift+Esc open task manger, got performance, open resource monitor and watch the hard drive usage as ED loads this may assist you in narrowing down what is going on. If your disk usage is peg'd out prior or during to ED load the issue is your hard drive. If thats not the case then watch your memory and cpu usage thats your next possible location of bottleneck as well as if you have too many programs open

From when i click "Play" in the launcher, it takes upwards to a minute until the Elite game window appears. Then maybe another 10 seconds of black screen until the "Frontier" logo appears, and from there it's all normal like it was before.

I've verified game files without errors. Loading game from an SSD and that is in good health.
I've looked at the processes related to Elite in Resource monitor, and it appears that the system is pretty much idle during this minute.

Starting Elite used to be quite fast before, so I am confused as to why this happened after the April update.

Edit: just clean reinstalled Nvidia 430.56 (the hotfix for 430.39 hogging CPU), no difference.

did you try connecting via a vpn too?
Why would that make any difference ?
But anyhow, i might have found an issue.
The network options in Elite thinks my VirtualBox Host-Only address is my local address :/ (im not running Elite inside it, it's for other things)
I tried disabling the VirtualBox adapter, and now Elite launcher refuses to start, LMAO

Edit: Actually doesn't refuse to start, but takes a very long time. Took a minute to start the launcher, and another minute to get the launcher to start Elite
Now Elite has the correct LAN address.

But problem is now "resolved":
I did not have UPNP enabled in my router, I thought since I did port forwarding manually, that would be enough.
Enabling UPNP fixed my startup delay. This was not an issue before the April update.
However, Elite still does not understand that my VirutalBox adapter is not my actual IP adress. Had to disable it.
Think i found a bug right there.
