new fss and surface scanner/galaxy map rant

I really love elite in vr, its how i play it and i cant go back.
Ever since the new exploration update i find i hate the way things happen now when you get to a new system.
I give a honk ( after many nights finding how to do it) and unlike before, no orbit lines appear, and unless you scan them in fss, they don't show on your system screen.
The surface scanner also looks better in non vr as it keeps you in the cockpit.
The new surface scanner is way more complicated then before and a lot more time consuming, at least before all you needed to do was get close enough and the scan happened.
For Gods sake frontier give some detailed instruction on control setups, it took a while, and going to a lot of sites, to finally figure out how the damn thing worked. There are bits and pieces everywhere, it seems not one single site has all the complete steps to get it up and running. The biggest one is hud mode change. I followed everyone's instructions and did the remapping of controls and I'm sitting there going what is hud mode change?

1 button was all that was needed before to do what now takes 12 for the fss and 8 for the surface scan.
As someone out around Sagittarius a , this has turned into a big time sink. i used to go in system give a honk to have look at the system map and decide if it was worth sight seeing.

I have no idea whats going to happen when i finally do go in system again.
When you honk in there will it give you all available stations or do i have to scan the out of everything to find out where i am?

The only saving grace it it will show you what type of planet is there, and if it's worth the trip to do a surface scan.

Well the galaxy map, what can i say, can we all agree in vr its a mess? Trying to find anything is a chore.
I put in Sagittarius a in search and nothing happened.....whats that all about.

On the plus side i did hit my first black hole, got a feeling they got to work on how that looks.

Thanks for listening.

Well I play the Game in VR. and Have been for about three years now, and I have no issues at all...Yes I had to set things up ( Keybindings and use Voice attack with the HCS voice packs). But once things are setup right..it's perfect, The only problem I have (And it's Not really a problem) is if i need to go to a browser to look something up i have to take off the head set. I'm not really sure what your problems are, What head set are you using? and do you have voice attack? If you need help with setting up Voice attack , drop by my Team speak Server maybe i can help you figure things out. Here is the info for the Teamspeak server: casualcrew.ts3ip.com any username and there is no password.

Hope to see you soon.

I really want an in-game keyboard, or am I missing something? How do other VR players type into the galaxy map search box or type in mesages in the comms window?
Also a joystick binding for screenshots would be good.

Hi,
just ranting i know I'll get used to it, I've gotten used to everything else they've thrown at use for the past 4 or 5 years.

I'll probably take you up on the voice attack as i have it but never really got it set up right.( or at all).

I havnt actually played the game after the new scanning system was implemented, i thought it takes you out of the cockpit too much. I may have to load it up today and see if i still feel the same.

I use my real keyboard. If it's not close enough to use the Oculus Dash virtual keyboard works as well, but is super awkward to use in game.

Agreed, re: screenshot keybinding.

For the most part: Touch type, Oculus Dash etc. I do have a virtual keyboard app I knocked up which is navigatable via a HOTAS hat but you need either Oculus Dash or OVRDrop to display it within Elite. It requires 6 binds in total, 1 to enable / disable it (and return focus to Elite), 4 for key navigation and 1 for pressing keys. Other than the 'Enable / Disable' bind any of the others can be buttons you already use in Elite.

It works reasonably well but by design only outputs to the Elite Dangerous client (so it will not send key outputs to Chrome, Firefox, etc). I'm happy to share it but it is a .exe which I know some people have (understandably) reservations about.

Also a joystick binding for screenshots would be good.

Does your HOTAS software not allow you to bind a key press to your equipment? Agreed that an actual in-game keybind would be better, but you should in most cases be able to configure a "Button X = keypress 'F12'" type of thing.

The idea is systems that have been discovered, (ie the whole bubble plus every discovered system outside the bubble that has been submitted to Cartographics) will show the planets stations etc on your nav panel even after a honk when you arrive. So anywhere there's a station it will be there without going in to FSS.

i have a thrustmaster warthog and every button is mapped and remapped depending on what i'm doing Ie: scanning, hud change , combat, srv..... it can get a little complicated if take a break from elite for a while.

I use a modded Hog - I tend to use the same binds for the more "standard" controls across sims to keep life simple, but as with yourself my setup for Elite is very complex, with layer changes based on certain in game configurations and 'shift buttons' used for changing other buttons to kick off macros etc. For example, lowering my gear with kill the throttle axis and move it to an anolgue thumbstick actually modded into the hog throttle and change the curves on my pedals toe breaks (used for vertical thrust) for more precise control while docking.

With all the buttons / switches / layers available on the Warthog and excellent tools available to program the beast you surely should be able to add a simple F12 press somewhere in your config :)

To be honest it never really dawned on me to map it. That and f10 for screen shots.

When i think about it is seems weird i never mapped it.
