New worshipper of Docking Computer

Yup, that's me. There. I said it.

In the other topic I asked the question about fastest method to get from Colonia back to the Bubble. One CMDR suggested that after I Suicidewinder I pick Hauler to get to home system as it's the cheapest ship that giver reasonable jump range. And so I did that. Upon resurrection in a Freewinder I picked Hauler instead of my primary taxi choice - Adder.

First what moment was when instead of usual "Launch" I had "Auto Launch". Since there was no option I pressed that and Hauler self took off. Woot? Then I took medium trip of 16 jumps from starte system to Cubeo. Upon arrival I asked for landing permission and noted "Slow down to auto land". So I throttled back and...

OH MY <censored> <censored> IN THE <censored> <censored> AND ALL SAINTS! It landed all by itself. Magic! Witchcraft! I love it!

So when I switched to my Krait I installed DC for testing purpose. AND I LOVE IT! Really. Previously I treated DC as a lazy way for CMDRs to avoid real skill needed to land. Now, after 2 years behind the wheel I got tricked into DC and it looks like I'll stay with it. I planned on trying it with big ships but seing how it performs I may have it on most on my ships.

I officially turned to the Dark Side. Now I need to find that CMDR who suggested Hauler. Haven't decided what to do with him, strangle for tricking me into DC or thank for showing me how wonderful module it is. For it was truly devious plan.

Well played sir. Well played indeed.

Just make sure you don't trust it too much; be present at the PC when it is doing its thing or you may regret it.

I'm a fan myself on ships where I can spare the module slot but earlier today it got my Cutter stuck in the mail slot during the auto launch. It was so stuck that I couldn't get unstuck when I took manual control and had to quickly exit to menu before I got shot at by station defenses. O.O That's the only time (so far) that the undock has failed me though.

Docking on the other hand has yet to cause me more than one (minor) issue....I sometimes get up to use the bathroom while autodock does it's thing, but never in my "big" ships like the Cutter, Beluga and T9. Better safe than sorry.

It makes navigation around star ports simple. Especially when you are flying an asteroid. So far the traffic controller has had to pay 500 credits when my t10 scraped a tower in front of the pad.

I have never had an issue with the docking computer, never had it crash my ship or get me a fine in some collision. Additionally after over 100 jumps with the supercruise assist module I have never had it not automatically dethrottle my ship upon completing a jump. These modules are lifesavers, they are not the Dark Side. There's nothing evil about using them, and they certainly won't corrupt you to your very core. Now if you'll excuse me I must find a way to silence the screams of the damned odd noises coming from the cargo bay.

Supercruise Assist is not so good for explorers as it forces you to throttle down at every jump, this slows you down immeasurably. It's useful in system once at the destination, so I normally switch it off until I need it.

I would suggest using shields with the ADC, especially with Asteroid Bases. Funny stuff happens otherwise. ;)
LOL, that's the one time I had an issue with the docking side of the ADC. Approaching asteroid base, engage DC, it proceeds to try to enter the asteroid from the side opposite the mail slot.

I normally don't actually engage it until I am already inside a station, but for the asteroid base it was my first one, so I didn't know where the heck to go to get in. Clearly....neither did my docking computer.

I am shocked ! 🤨😝

Please tell me that this is a choice?

Launching and boosting out of the mail slot; get my old blood moving and starts my game.
Yes, the new and amazing ADC is a removable piece of kit. After the update it comes standard with new ship purchases, but you can immediately sell it and free up the new standard C1 optional slot it comes in instead.

So is the old DC still available?

I only have one on my Clipper and only use that to enjoy the view, by changing camera and basking in it beauty, as the DC does its stuff.

I completely disagree with this as I'm primarily an explorer myself. The assist makes it virtually impossible to accidentally bake yourself on jump, a danger on long trips or late night sessions. It does not "slow you down immeasurably" in anyway, by default you have no speed on entry to a new system, you quickly gain speed from that point and then must aim yourself away from the star's exclusion zone to begin scooping. With the assist you simply don't gain speed a second after entering the new system automatically. You're free to throttle up at will and will gain speed at the exact same rate as if you'd just jumped in without assist, the only difference is that you make the conscious effort to start that procedure each time you complete a jump.

Worrying about lost seconds between jumps is only a factor if you're racing to a destination and not actually exploring the systems you pass through. Jump, honk while scooping then jumping again is the least exploration one can do and still be considered exploring at all. However, if your aim is to arrive, refuel and then do a full sweep of the system, mapping and all, then there is clearly no rush. In that scenario you are carrying orders of magnitude more exploration data to worry about losing, having the assist to keep you from accidentally burning all the data to a crisp when jumping is worth so much more than the cost of the module or the slot it occupies.

I don't know about you, but sometimes I stay up far too late playing ED. I've dozed off at the controls. I've woken up to find my hull down to 30%, and the module panel looking like some lunatic went at it with a welding torch. I've limped to the nearest station only to realize my sensors were fried to the point of not being able to target the station to even start docking procedures, with a burnt out AFMU and a cracked canopy wondering which would kill me first, running out of fuel or a fleck of paint shattering the glass in front of me. I'd nearly forgotten that rebooting the entire ship could restore a percent or two of functionality to otherwise destroyed modules, and was ultimately able to dock and repair, but only just barely. That mess is no longer a worry with the assist module. While it makes for a funny story, I don't actually want those things to happen.

I like the various autopilot modules just fine; I’d even be in favor of adding more of them to the game; however the decision to haphazardly toss in more slots to every ship and pack them in for free, does not sit well with me and I think foreshadows a major decline in the game’s ongoing development.

You can disable that function in your right panel under ship controls if you don't want to throttle down.
