As Mr Hendrix said "
They're hoping soon my kind will drop and die
But I'm gonna wave my freak flag high, high
Wave on, wave on

im at work.. im actually at work, right this very second.. im supposed to be doing something else.. but id rather be here looking up mining guides than doing the work I get paid to do.. thank god they don't have key loggers at work or do they... delete delete delete delete... are the delete keys logged too.. if I get fired I can claim benefits.. one of the benefits of getting benefits is I would have more time to benefit from playing ED for more hours and if im asked to provide evidence of all the jobs ive been searching to keep my benefits I can print out screen shots from ED... I searched for courier jobs.. but there were none available in my system.. Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrr im not sure they would be the required job types the DWP would be looking for but what the hell... it would make me laugh. soon I shall be home and shall be reclined in my gaming chair with a nice cup of tea with at least 5 hours of solid ED ahead.. woohoo.. im really considering getting a gaming laptop so I can bring ED to work, mobile phones make for excellent Internet Dongles.

Tell me about it. I'm at work too, thankfully the forums went down this morning so I cud focus on my day job!

I'm in denial about my addiction, I think it's perfectly normal for a 40-something man with a corporate job and two children to play spaceship games late into the night most days. Ya'll are just fine. See you at the next session, beaches. ;)
Just wait until you're in your 50s and have grandchildren. Perfectly normal.

If prison had 23 hours isolation every day I'd insist it be 24 hours providing I can have a gaming laptop, internet, toilet, bed and a hatch to have my food delivered through. What better way to serve a sentence. Now if I can be guaranteed those things which crime does no harm to anyone but carries the longest sentence. I'm just thinking of reducing the amount of time I'm not spending on ED and the environment at a whole could benefit from me not polluting the atmosphere as I drive to and from work. My life outside of a cell with an elite dangerous laptop is eating away at my conscience. Every day I'm not isolated with ED I'm causing this planet irreparable damage.

Sometimes I think that I'm actually one of the 'kids' on this board (49 here).

When you say "when the servers close down", surely that's not a possibility. I can't imagine that a game such as this could ever go offline. Would it not be possible to have each player host their own share of the system.

Hey, Everquest is still going so here's hoping.

Omg when I read back some of the things I wrote I'm thinking a nut house might be more suitable

No good thinking that in the UK... They closed all of the 'loony bins' (apart from the extreme criminal ones) to replace them with 'Care in the Community'... Difficult... I'd stick with the 'Nick' idea :D

Now, only gotta do the Guardian Weapons site another 11 times before I can return to the CG Outpost...

I've never been so profoundly affected by a game before. Granted I've liked lots of games and completed many fps games and racing games but I've never encountered anything like elite dangerous before. We could slow the earth's rotation so we could have extra hours in the day just for ED
Just learn to run on less sleep. I’d regularly get 3 hours sleep before a work day at the height of my addiction. VR helps you ignore day/night cycles, too. My record is 10 hours straight with that thing on my face.

If I win the lottery I'll buy Frontier Development and I'll create a secure server facility deep underground. With a massive underground hotel complex dedicated to elite dangerous buffs

I get the sense you have become slightly worried by the servers comment......

Don't worry when they do close one day many years in the future we will all implode from chronic withdrawal issues so it won't matter!!

Addiction is defined as a maladaptive pattern of substance use leading to clinically significant impairment or distress, as manifested by three (or more) of the following, occurring any time in the same 12-month period:

  • Grinding tolerance, as defined by either of the following:
  • (a) A need for markedly increased amounts of exploration, trad rank, federation rank, or material gathering to achieve intoxication or the desired effect or
  • (b) Markedly diminished effect with continued use of the same amount of the grind.
  • Withdrawal, as manifested by either of the following:
  • (a) The characteristic withdrawal syndrome for the background simulation game, or
  • (b) The same (or closely related) activity, such as power play is utilized in an effort to relieve or avoid withdrawal symptoms. When you move to Power Play, you are in trouble.
  • The grind is often underway in larger amounts or over a longer period than intended.
  • There is a persistent desire or unsuccessful efforts to cut down or control guardian module gathering.
  • A great deal of time is spent in activities necessary to obtain the module or weapon unlock (such as visiting multiple sites or flying long distances), use the modules or weapons (for example, planning ship builds on coriolis), or programming voice attack or re-working keybinds.
  • Important social, occupational, or recreational activities are given up or reduced because of the grind.
  • The grind is continued despite knowledge of having a persistent physical or psychological problem that is likely to have been caused or exacerbated by long distance exploration in open and a compelling and irrational need to turn in cartographic data in Wyrd.

  • In addition, remission categories are classified into four subtypes: (1) full, (2) early partial, (3) sustained, and (4) sustained partial; on the basis of whether any of the criteria for abuse or dependence have been met and over what time frame. The remission category can also be used for Commanders receiving agonist therapy or for those living in a controlled, ED-free environment.

Brilliant just brilliant

I used to be addicted, but I have developed a tolerance due to the excessive grinding and the slow slide towards casual gameplay with each passing update. But there is no alternative to it yet so...

Well, in defense of our addiction I think part of the reason behind why we play so much is because it can take quite a long time to do things!
Last weekend I decided to go get some meta alloys to unlock the meta alloy HRPs. I located a site with ripe barnacles, then went into outfitting to swap a few modules around to shorten the trip and make some space and also buy an SRV. After a good few jumps I arrived and landed at the site and started shooting barnacles, I needed 16 MAs but the SRV can only carry 2 at a time. So after a few relogs and trips back to the ship I had my 16. I then had to find another station that sold a certain commodity needed for the unlock. I then needed to visit a mat trader to juggle my mats so I had everthing else I needed. I then had to visit a tech broker to unlock and buy the MA HRPs. Finally I had to return to the system I started in to enjoy the limited benefits of the MA HRPs in an AX CZ!
So the above took me 2 hours. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy all the flitting around, its all part of the fun, but it's also a big reason behind why we end up playing for so long.
