Re: Addiction

Sell that projector set, buy 2 VR sets and take your GF with you on those long journeys. :)

Yeah I thought about VR but I'll wait a few more years before getting to it to let the technology evolve.

Perhaps it'll sound stupid but there is still a lot of "unknown" about long-term risks of VR (eye strain, motion sickness effect on brain, myopia ...) and if I buy one to play Elite I'll definitely play too much :p

Zipline here ... Yes, I guess I am addicted to ED. I only play at weekends, but spend the week (in a corporate job) just waiting for those weekends to arrive, and when they do, I play every opportunity I can! And when I am not playing, I am reading these forums or theory-crafting builds in coriolis or planning my next escapade. When I retire, I will probably play every day ... something to look forward to. :)
Same kind of life style here. Military Monday to Friday. Week nights if I'm lucky and the Mrs wants to watch carp on TV I'll get in some ED time but defo the weekend. Like wise I plan, read, dream ED.. I've never done that before because of a game.. It's so much more than just a game it's actually a way of life now. While not productive in the grand scheme of things but it's a production of pleasure that no other game has given me. I had an acorn electron, a BBC micro, acorn archimedes and elite was awesome back then but faded into oblivion. To fast forward to 2018 when I discovered elite dangerous and that it had already been out for a few years really did give me a slap on the proverbial face and woke me up out of my social coma if spent 20 years + in.. I was surprised when my aging rig played it with fluidity. Bonus. Happy days and wish wish wish I was 10 again but in this time.

Hi,

I'm CMDR Wendake and I'm addicted to ED.

Actuallly, I have never spent so many hours in a game (850h and still flying). Playing pretty much every day.

Spent too much money for this game : HD gaming projector, 80" screen wall for the projector, pimped my PC to run it on 4K with good setting, HOTAS, head tracking...

I also stole a room in our house so I could have a nice & quiet place to play.

My girlfriend now calls me "The Astronaut".
You will have to post a photo of your setup

Technology is already good enough to give you amazing experience, even with crappiest sets (1st gen WMR).
If you are really concerned with long-term risks, you will have to wait for 20-30 years. ;)
Game time is a valid reason, can't dispute that. 🤣

CMDR Chylder here and I have a problem. My problem is that there aren't enough playable hours in my day! Flight sims were some of the first games that I played when I was young and E:D fills a void that I didn't even know was there. I just got back from Colonia and the center and after months in the black it is sooo nice to be back in the bubble. So many things to do! Just waiting for my kombat krait to be delivered back to the bubble and boy, do I miss that ship. I play on xbox one and the only thing I can think that would make it better is if I could use my chat pad to set hot keys, other than that I just love this game

Thanks for gathering round in a circle for today's addiction group.

I'd like to start by introducing myself, I'm PaxtonNewt and I'm addicted to ED.. I first had a taste of ED about 6 months ago and I spend everyday seeking out my next hit of ED. I've not gotten any withdrawal symptoms yet but as with all addiction I'm sure that demon is on its way

Anyone else like to share their story

Hello I am aRJay.

I have been addicted to Elite Dangerous for the last 3 or 4 years.

So far I have only suffered from withdrawal symptoms a few times, the first was when my computer died the latest was when I had to go away for the weekend, now though I can go nearly a full day and a half without playing before the twitching starts. If I have to go away on holiday again I can just slip the laptop, PSU, HOTAS, headphones etc into my bag, no one will notice, then I'll just have to find free internet or a WiFi hotspot.

I think I started threads like this four years ago... :)

I had a co-worker who locked his entire family out of his TV room every Sunday, all day, just to watch (American rules) football. He ignored all pleas to join the family on weekends.

He didn't last long after shaving a centimeter-square part of his skin down to cranial bone, and refused any medical attention.

We (Elite players) are waaaay past that point of no return. :(

Just my humble opinion, but you're really missing a trick there. Having bought a Rift in August last year, I've not played without it since; can't even imagine going back to a flat screen. IRL I have good sea legs - never even suffered motion sickness, so I play for hours in VR. No eye strain, no motion sickness...

Really, give it a try if you can afford it. I strongly recommend getting into a T9 and looking behind you - the twisting multiple corridors will blow you away. Would love to hear if any other CMDRs recommend any other ships for their 'look behind you' view.

I was away from gaming for many, many years. I played when first doom was released and loved playing wing commander & privateer but had never played early elite games. I finally bought a ps4 for Christmas 2017 to play new doom and the newer wolfenstein series. Found ED immediately but did not buy until October 2018 because all reviews said it was a steep learning curve. It was steep ... but worth it.

I have a stack of PS4 games that I've been enjoying immensely while Elite sits in the "cellophane wrapper". Right now I'm addicted to Lara Croft's pony tail, LOL (even if it does defy gravity while shimmying up ropes).
I too had a problem with lara croft. I got her in a small cave with a nice fire and the light bounced of her curves and before I knew it I was knocking on the desk.. It was then that I had to leave planet earth so ED was my route out of that shameful existence

We are not worthy!!!

I am retired and do play every day - but never enough hours in a day to do everything I want to! I often wonder how I found the time to work. :)
Thanks for the heads up cmdr, I think I'll start managing my better half's expectations now!

Addiction? Ha!
You just need discipline.
No booting up ED until the Tick, then get in as many hours as possible, then an uneasy sleep during the hours of uncertainty and dreaming of what to do after the next Tick.
The next Tic.

What do you do if you've finished watching all of The Tick?
