I love RP games and I role play most of the ones I play, even if they're not RP games or have no RP elements (I role played GTA IV once ).

I do the same thing; I roleplayed a miner in Skyrim for 70 hours before thinking up a way to get involved in the main story.

I've always wanted an MMO where RPing is pretty much the main selling point and the gameplay encourages RPing (even the mundane jobs). Ultima Online came pretty close for me with it's Seers and IGMs (dedicated personnel to craft stories and play important lore characters; I remember being part of an intricate story line that spanned months, all orchestrated by paid staff members to create an unique story).

And eventhough Elite is not an MMO in the traditional sense of the term, it does lend itself well to RP, so I'll be very much interested in playing with a group of likeminded people.

Just one burning question though:

-Ironman mode or normal? I'm leaning towards Ironman mode, specially if you will be able to survive by ejecting in an escape pod and pray someone picks up your distress signal. Also I'm thinking of bringing back the way I RP'ed in Dayz; creating a new character from scratch each death. Since your background wasn't that important in that game (most of it is irrelevant due to everything going to hell) I just made a few character-archetypes, with a certain set characteristics and act accordingly; making up and adding to their story as I progressed. When I died, I just picked one of my char-archetypes and make up a paragraph of basic backstory that might explain some of his traits and go back out in to the world again. Elite in Ironman seems to lend itself perfectly for that style.

So ideally I would like a nice bunch of rp'ers in Ironman, but I'm willing to comprimise if that's not where the majority of RPers will flock. I'll keep an eye out on how this'll develop and work on some chartypes and possible backgrounds that'll fit the Elite universe. Still have a lot to learn though, I came late to the Elite party and knew nothing about it's universe, until a couple of weeks ago. Although I'm incorporating some lore in my VA pack, so I'm quickly catching up.

Joe is the 34th century version of such stereotypes as: Arthur Daley, Flash Harry, Del Boy and Lonely (You have to go back it bit for that one. Lonely is from the British TV series 'Callan') If you are into musicals or Victor Hugo he is Monsieur Thenardier.

He's a wide boy, a spiv, a chancer. He's a coward, a sycophant and a bit creepy. He's a copper's nark, a petty crook and a fence. He's in his fifties, he smells bad and he drinks too much. He is a survivor of a post apocalyptic world. How he survived isn't important but if it had to involve hiding under a pile of recently dead bodies... he would provide his own bodies.

There is another side to him though which might one day let him squeeze through the Pearly Gates... providing St Peter looks the other way for just a second.

Joe is a character I created in the game Fallen Earth and had such great fun with that I thought I would recreate him here and see what will become of him.

I'm not really planning on being in game much in Beta (RL issues which should take me up to Saturnalia) but once Gamma kicks off, well, that's when the fun should start I think.

Edited to add: Joe is ostensibly a citizen of The Empire. At least that's where his birth is registered and is currently what his papers confirm. And although he professes not to have any politics he is even less trusting of anyone who isn't.

Thanks for your comments guys.

I have changed the rules slightly, so now you have to post your Commander's bio here prior to asking to join the group. I will also post my Commander bio here :)

The group is available for joining now! In the next few days I will maybe create a nice banner for us and pimp up the first post, so that it looks more eye candy :)

How would I go about this as private group is red and not selecteable?

Sorry about that, should be OK now!

Thanks, I didn't post any updates to Shallowgrave Tales in a while, as I have no readers pretty much plus not so much time to play. I may come back after Beta 2 comes out, as there will be more content and hence more material for the stories.

Nice, thanks for your suggestions! I didn't actually think about which mode we should play. I'm leaning towards Ironman, but I think it may be too harsh and the need to create a new Commander each time may be too much, as Elite can be quite unforgiving game. Also, I'm really attached to Mathias Shallowgrave, as he is a character from one of my SF stories I wrote a while back and I really wouldn't like him to die haha! So I'm torn really.

We can decide closer to the release date when we have more people. We can organise a poll or something.

Mathias Shallowgrave

Mathias Shallowgrave

space vagabond, warm-hearted smuggler and rebel opportunist

Background

Mathias Shallowgrave is a shady character. His name is most likely an alias, one of the many he’s been using – however that’s uncertain. Not much is known about his past apart from a few facts. He comes from one of the independent worlds and he used to be a trader, but has abandoned this profession over 15 years ago, after his family died in an accident during one of the many clashes between Federation and Empire over an independent system they were living in at the time.

After the incident Mathias grew a passionate hatred towards both the Empire and Federation as political formations. He has also become a quiet and introverted person as he struggled to deal with his loss. He's a lone wolf without any clear purpose, cruising the galaxy and looking for opportunities ever since.

Shallowgrave is a careless man that is fond of taking risky jobs, quite often being on the wrong side of the law. He isn't an evil person by any means however; quite the opposite in fact: he has a good heart and believes in karma. He's reluctant in showing his feelings due to the events of the past though.

He’s been doing many different things in an ongoing attempt to fill the emptiness he has felt since losing his family and all he cared about in life. It would have seemed that he’s constantly chasing something, but even Mathias himself is not quite sure what it is.

Recent events

Mathias Shallowgrave made a deal with a group of pirates a few months ago. He was supposed to steal an advanced weapon prototype plans from one of the corporations contracted by the Federation military. High risk – high reward errand, Shallowgrave’s favourite type. Unfortunately things didn’t go so well and Mathias was forced to run for his life from the top secret facility where the research was conducted. He barely made it, but he managed to escape in a ship registered under a false ID.

If that wasn’t enough, when the pirates found out about the mission failure, they decided to assassinate Shallowgrave in fear he may have compromised their base location to the Feds. They managed to track him down in one of the no man’s land empty systems and a deadly dogfight took place. Even though Mathias managed to destroy all the enemy ships, his own vessel was damaged beyond repair and he had no other choice, but to use the the escape capsule.

He was rescued by a big trading vessel that mis-jumped into the empty system Mathias was drifting in after his escape capsule ran out of fuel. When they finally arrived at the nearest starport in a nearby system, Shallowgrave discovered that all his accounts were hacked into and all the credits he’s amassed over the past years were gone. The main suspect was his recent pirate lord employer, but Mathias was never able to find out for sure.

He had no other choice but to wait those few months for things to go quiet and then loan a basic Sidewinder ship from the Pilots Federation to start anew. He was rescued by a big trading vessel that have mis-jumped into the empty system Mathias was drifting in after his escape capsule ran out of fuel. When they finally arrived at the nearest starport in a nearby system, he discovered that all his accounts were hacked into and all the credits and assets he’s amassed over the past years were gone. The main suspect was his recent pirate lord employer, but Mathias was never able to find out for sure.He wasn't a stupid man though. He's had an old Eagle class fighter docked deep within the Federal sectors in the case of emergency like this one. Shallowgrave waited a few months until his trail ran cold and then spent the last of his credits to book a passage to LT 15449 A system, where his Eagle was docked.

Left with nothing more than a 100 Credits and the ship he was forced to start anew yet again.

So i mostly use DaHunn for in game names, i can understand that this can be game braking. Do you have a problem with my alias or should i change it to another one?

Will consider this, as I did RP Frontier back in the days :p

But actually, you could accept criminals into the role playing group. Same as with someone that wants to play a benevolent mercenary. I would think that they would balance themselves out. Maybe if you took in one criminal per five crime fighters.

it is quite hard making up a nice bio. Dont want to be a benevolent hero, nor a average Joe. Hmmmm have to think harder....

Don't just create a character because it sounds good. Think of something that is interesting to you. I created Joe because I found the fictional characters I quoted as source material absolutely fascinating. I wanted to see what it would perhaps be like to live that way, on the edges of civilised society. Joe's first foray was into the post apoc world of Fallen Earth where he thrived in the dog eat dog society. Now I want to see how well he does in a high tech frontier society that is contained in ED.

DaHunn is actually OK I think :) It reminds me of Dutch "Von" or Scottish "Mac". It doesn't sound silly to me.

I don't think this is a good idea. I like RP and freedom, but to not to the point where it becomes a burden and kills joy and fun :)

ok thx. It has something to do with my real name. Atilla

Atilla the Hun came in to my mind. so kind of stuck with DaHunn. Been using it for a long time now... see my About me page...:D

Commander Aran,

Freelancer and champion of the underdog, dabbles in most areas but refuses contacts against innocents.
Tries to keep to the law but has a habit of stealing pirate cargos so a bit of smuggling is needed now and then.
Of the three main powers he is firmly on the side of the alliance and although he holds the federation no ill will he disposes slavery and this often puts him at odds with the empire

[ooc]
Hi all, with regards to ironman although i can see the point made for it i think it would cause issues.
I know its only beta and issues will be fixed but my ship has been destroyed so many time when it has not been my fault that i would not want to risk it

I hope so, I don't want my Open Online Elite becoming a tea party; I like some danger along the road, but maybe it's a good idea to set up some sort of rules of engagement so the PvP isn't completely without consent of the victim.

For instance saying something like "You're in the wrong place commander, better turn back now or face the consequences." before engaging.

it is quite hard making up a nice bio. Dont want to be a benevolent hero, nor a average Joe. Hmmmm have to think harder....

I know the feeling, when I started out RPing back in UO I used to unknowingly make my characters Mary Sue's and polarised stereotypes. A thing that helped me was giving my characters quirks and bad traits for every 2 good traits; and when I have the traits down, I craft a personality around it and then think of a background that might help explain this personality (what caused him to have his bad and good traits).

Although I think in Elite it's not too bad to play an average joe, but I can see you'll want an interesting angle, so your stories don't become as dull as being an accountant.

Haha, I actually figured out that your nickname comes from The Hun :) But obviously didn't know it's your real name! Nice one actually :)

I'm interested in rp-ing online. Haven't really had the chance since SWG. Lastlan Lucavi was my character there too, a smuggler, bounty hunter and merc loosely affiliated with the Empire. I'll be retreading him here I think. Bio to come soon!

Thank you, Commander! Looking forward to have you onboard :)

"So you want to know the skin on Commander Lastlan Lucavi, huh? Well, it's your cred and your time, pal. Here's the GalNet version: Lastlan Lucavi, born in Imperial space, spent some time as a combat pilot in an Eagle during those border skirmishes twelve years ago. Good pilot, but a lousy soldier. Discharged on disciplinary grounds and narrowly escaped a sentence in the Imperial Naval clink. The charges? Petty theft, gambling, dealing illegal intoxicants, corruption of a minor and disgracing the uniform. They basically threw the book at him. Hells, they threw the whole danged librarium. Lucavi drifted from bum job to bum job until he won a dinged-up Sidewinder in a game of chance. He registered with the Pilots Federation and never looked back."

"Whaddya mean 'and the rest'?! That's all I got. I deal in facts, not rumors. How a pilot makes his cred is his own damned business... unless you got a lot more money on you. No? Didn't think so. Last info broker who ratted this guy out ended up having a nasty accident. He 'accidentally' got shivved in the kidneys with no witnesses. No, I ain't saying it was Lucavi, and I ain't sayin' that it wasn't. Now if you don't mind, I gotta appointment at the red light zone."
