Improve the mining lance! And add gimballed to all mining gear.

But see that would be different. If mining lances actually MINED differently the whole discussion would be moot because they would be a different MINING tool, which would be fine! Mining mechanics need to be more than just rudimentary HP bars for asteroids but that's a deeper discussion by itself; the mining lance as is just doesn't serve much purpose; if you want a weapon there are far superior weapons but if you just want it to mine it gives you literally nothing over a regular mining laser. Gimballing them would just be kind of superfluous as things stand.

Of course, the way turrets and multicrew currently work, even having them turreted is kind of superfluous too, but I guess that's another discussion entirely...

I agree with the gist of this post.

Currently turreted Seismic Charge launchers and Abrasion blasters are about as good as fixed mounts.
They only work in multi-crew, and since most people don't really bother with MC, they're about as useful as Hamburgers to a Hindu, or a bikini to an eskimo....

Not sure why turreted mining tools don't work the same way when you target a fissure or deposit, like how a turreted laser tracks a bogie.

Because they aren't turrets. The game just calls them that because multicrew functionality was added to them. Confusing but that's what FDev went with.
