It's time for an Anaconda competitor

Looking at our shipyard we already have several good competitors (few examples below):
Dolphin and DB-X are both good small ships for exploration, even if the dolphin is more passenger-oriented.
Same for ASP-X and Krait Phantom in the medium class.
The Krait MKII and the Python are both good mutlirole Medium Ships
Federal Corvette and Imperial Cutter are the natural competitors as "end-game" ships.

I think what is really missing now in the shipyard is a competitor for the Anaconda, so a good multi-role/explorer large ship.
That is something I would be interested to see in one of these small patches for 2019.

I’m not against this, I like taking huge ships exploring...

The problem with large ships is the supercruise handling, if it handles like a dog many CMDRs simply won’t use it...

Rather than having the proposed ship directly compete with the Anaconda and its multi role capabilities I’d rather see a large explorer that looks and handles beautifully but with minimal combat potential...

Something like a T7 with a major face lift...
...or a Clipper with a huge FSD. 👍

Thing is, with an FSD booster and some choice engineering pretty much any ship can be made an explorer.

I've done a 5k ly (so not too long but just wanted to check as proof of concept) in a T-10, fitted with all bells and whistles, which still jumped almost 50ly. It's currently fitted as an armed miner.

As for large multiroles - any of the large pad ships can be fitted (except the T7) for any role, so not sure if another large multirole ship is really needed.

Personally I'd rather see a medium Imperial ship as that isn't catered for at all right now - and I'm not all that eager on Gutamayas generally.

Why?

One big explorer is quite enough - Anaconda will be hard to best in terms of jump range and internals, but the SC handling serves her right.
Then there is the Orca - with more than decent jump range and nice internals and SC handling.

In the medium department there is the:
  • Phantom with good range and good internals
  • Asp X with quite similar jump range but somehow cramped internals - although it compensates with superb SC handling, way better than both Phantom and DBX
  • then comes the rest of the gang, Krait MK2 can get around 50ly with a fighter bay, Python the same but without fighterbay, both with their ups and downs
In the small department:
  • DBX is the jump range master, but its internals are quite a letdown and the SC handling is not really like a small ship should have
  • Dolphin can get like 57-60ly with decent internals and nice SC handling
  • below 50ly we have hauler, icourier, cobra mk3, viper mk4
Edit: As large explorers - you can also count the Beluga, Cutter and Clipper, with about 50+ ly jump range with nice, bad and respectively very nice SC handling

I agree... A competitor ship doesn't need to have the same stats. In this case it could be more agile and have more space for thrusters and sacrifice some hard point instead.

If FDev dared they would rather nerf the Anaconda yesterday, but the community is too used to the way she is now.
It was Sandy who said that the Annie was overpowered, but they could not change her anymore at this stage of development.

The Anaconda will therefore stay a one of a kind. There will be no direct competitors.
I personally would not mind if the Annie was given a more realistic mass at the cost of a little bit of jump range.

Nothing will ever rival the Conda as a multi-purpose ship. The Devs would have to intentionally make an unbalanced ship in order to compete thanks to the Anaconda's Magic Hull and they are not going to do that. But the Anaconda has its own issues and flaws as well. Its far from perfect.
