[Light- Hearted] What was your best rebuy to date?

Don't remember the specifics, but it involved:

  • getting destroyed by station security
  • boosting inside the station
  • trying to get out again
  • getting scanned
  • being stuck in the toaster rack
  • carrying illicit cargo
  • forgetting to request docking permission
Not necessarily in that order.
Forgetting to request docking permission.

Yah, I'm now very good at flipping a 180 with T9 in a burning station. :ROFLMAO:

I still have no ideas why this happened, so answers on a postcard.

Lifted off from a planetary outpost. and was just banking for the escape vector when I spotted a skimmer. Being relatively new to the game, and never having seen a skimmer before, I decided to take a closer look. As my Challenger has no downward looking glass in the canopy, I rolled inverted and carefully accelerated over the top of the skimmer to get a decent view of it.

Next thing I know I'm being knocked sideways toward a cliff face. My shields have gone. My HUD is out. The canopy glass is shattered. I have no control whatsoever. All I can see is the canyon wall getting bigger and bigger at an alarming rate and before I can even glance at the message screen to try and make head or tail of what was going on the screen goes black and I wake up in prison somewhere wondering wth just happened.....

No warning, nothing. To this day I believe I was instafragged by a skimmer equipped with an experimental null field cannon (see Jack Campbell's 'Lost Fleet' for details)

What that sounds like is that you bumped the skimmer - they are a little neurotic and class this as an attack so the whole outpost starts firing on you

This started a while back to solve players taking "kill x Skimmers" missions. The method was to simply sit next to an outpost firing dumbfire missiles at skimmers to complete the mission. After one of the updates FDEV changed things so an assault on a skimmer made the whole outpost fire at you...

fun fact - this also brought in the hilarious and quite famous outpost insta-death skimmer bug

not sure it was the same update but occasionally skimmers would spawn a couple of kms above planetary bases then start falling. You'd be just starting to get your landing approach right when you'd get hit from above by a skimmer, the station would recognise that as you attacking its skimmers so would blow the crap out of you within a couple of seconds.

Last time I caught a rebuy was out at Beagle Point (of all places).

Long story short my hand controller failed, bought a new (different) one, redid the bindings and failed to notice I had somehow set the landing override pitch control to 'reversed'.

So .. coming in to land on a high G planet I lowered the landing gear and immediately lost control, pancaked upside down on the surface, rattled around like that for a while and eventually blew up.

When I finally figured out what had happened I burst out laughing while simultaneously cursing under my breath.

Breached canopy vulture back from a cz, interdicted by the same faction I helped, I crash in the exclusion zone of the planet and asphyxiate 1 ls away from the station.

Smuggling with a shieldless asp FA Off doing the Isinona manoeuver. 10 m away from the pad, my first PvP encounter decided to squash me against the concrete with a corvette.

But if there can only be one, it's gonna be against the Gnosis turrets, trying to shoot an ethereal tharghoid which cunningly camouflaged in front of the station.

When I first bought a Cutter I wanted to try some PvP (when I still cared about it, before engineers) So I tricked it out, but I was so excited that I forgot to set up the priorities (I was about 2k hours in at that point, so fairly experienced and I've never forgotten about this before)
So I found a couple of guys, interdicted one, deployed weapons... and my whole ship shut down. Therefore I have been swiftly "dispatched" back to base.

We had a good laugh about it with the other guy, though.

Oh gosh, I forgot another glorious one. Pretty sure I've told it in another thread but it definitely belongs here.

Scene: I have splurged on a used DK2, and after playing around with it briefly, decide to take my Anaconda complete with a Competent SLF pilot out into a Level 6 signal source to try out combat in VR. Sounded like a good idea at the time.

Additional notes: I'm not yet using Voice Attack. I use a T16000 stick / FCS throttle.

The combatants: Deadly Anaconda and three deadly Pythons. I'm just into Dangerous myself and am definitely not all that Dangerous.

Battle isn't going well. My initial tactic of going after the Annie was not a good idea, and I was paying no heed to its fighter. No problem--I have shield cells, and about a ring and a half of shields. Time to fire one off and adjust my strategy. Let's see, the button for that in in the middle of the second row on the right side of the base of the 16000 stick as I blindly feel around on the stick with my throttle hand. Ah, here it is--and I press it resolutely.

I immediately see the silent running message as my shields drop and heat rockets. WHAT DID I JUST DO? Hmm, oh, that's right, silent running was bound to the button below shield cell, and I was off a row. Fantastic!

Extra bonus: I also had no armor nor any hull enhancement modules on this "battle" wagon. Hard to tell I'd made most of my riches trading up to that point, eh?

I think I lasted about eight seconds after I hit silent running, if that. Shamefully head to the rebuy screen, then to the crew page to make sure my active pilot is still active ....oh that's right, they're dead. :(

....

Fairly early on I ended up with a broken canopy and a severely damaged hull in a ring during a Bounty Hunting CG the nearest place to go was an outpost, everything went well didn’t mess up the approach to much and was almost centred over the assigned landing pad when I breathed my last. Light seconds! I was within meters if I had slammed it down I might of survived, if the hull didn’t fail.

Forgotten all about that one until now.

oh listen to this one I just remembered from perusing this thread, back when horizons landed I was 10,000lyrs away headed for the centre in my python with a 16lyr jump range.. yep, I had no idea back then, and had to turn back.. Land on planets! gottta get me some of that!
so, headed back and first place I could get an SRV I got one and got going again...16lyr jump range and all!

Made it to Sag A roamed about a bit then headed to Colonia...

After a lengthy session and being within 3,000Lyrs of Colonia, I decided to stop for the night on a metal rich planet, by this time my belief that I might find something of significance whilst traversing the planet in my SRV was so .. immersive .. I thought, might as well get some high level mats whilst doing it.

When I landed I noted that the SRV bay needed repairs, good thing I bought the (new for me) AFMU!

started repairs and then made my fatal mistake.....

I attempted to deploy the SRV whilst it was being repaired...... it didn't like that and promptly showed me the error of my ways with a rebuy screen which took me back to where I first purchased the SRV that ultimately killed me, and all those. first. discovered. systems...... I could not play Elite for quite a while after that..

Not a rebuy but close call.

I do not boos inside the stations. Just don't. Heard way too many stories of it ending bad. So imagine this, one day, me in FDL, slightly DD thrusters, light build so rather fast. Taking off, noticing I'm on the very end of the station, what is more - totally empty station. No ship at all. You know what heppened next, right?

"Hmm, maybe I can try to boost away this one more time? What wrong may happen?"

Aligned with mailslot, full throttle, boost WHOOOMCH....

T-9 arose from it's pad, preparing to depart.
Beluga majectically squeezed it's fat curves through mailslot, inbound.

Wildly avoided T-9, bounded off of Beluga, shields out, hull dropped to 15-ish % in an instant, on top got fined for reckless flying.
