Switching modes. I still don't get it.

That is great and all, but can anyone tell me one single incentive besides "meeting people" that would make we want to play in open-online?

For me? PvP for example. I like PvP.
But i can tell you why i want SP from time to time:
Although i like a good fight, i won't be a pirate or bounty hunter. I will fight whoever attacks me or is signaling he wants a fight.
Now there are days where i'm in a very bad mood...those are the days i play SP, i just don't want to see other players then. Most of the people wouldn't like to see me too when i'm in "psycho mode".

I could agree to seperate characters unter one condition:
Only ONE (non ironman) character in multiplayer for everyone.
If I have to be responsible for my killing sprees, pirates shouldnt have the opportunity to switch to their "trading char" to finance their doings and circumvent the faction problems they might have.

Because flying with a friend at your wing makes every single engagement with a hostile "two against...".

Flying on your lonesome makes every single hostile engagement "one against...".

Oh, and for me, "meeting people" is an insanely huge incentive. Others may not feel that way... some of the time, or all of the time. Those people are free to choose whichever way of playing best suits them.

Nope. But then, that's why you have the choice. If playing the game with others is your thing, play open. If not, but you still want the dynamically changing galaxy, play solo. If you want a world that's all about you, or if you just hate needing an internet connection to play (which is reasonable if you have no use for the online features), play offline.

One reason I actually thought would make great sense to play in open-online was to have missions or some type of shared objective which would be much easier when playing in an open-online group. I am not sure if Frontier has anything like this in mind, but I think it would at least offer some incentive for being in open-online. I honestly believe unless something is offered, I will probably stay mostly in solo-online, which would be so weird to me, knowing we could all be in open-online enjoying ourselves trying to accomplish something together. What that "something" is or could be, I have not heard of yet. Currently, I just don't see the incentive versus the risks of being in open-online. It does not make sense to me.

At the moment the biggest risk in "open" is the network, not the players ;)

it is the biggest game design bug ever

I will be happy the day when they fix it and throw out all the modes make it online only, plus maybe a strict offline version with limited features and NO WAY to transfer offline character.

it is gamebreaking cheating and exploiting

like i said, then "multiple chars" have to go too...for the same reasons.

I believe there was some talk about group missions in one of the interviews David Braben gave recently (might've been the EGX one, or possibly the Lave Radio interview - check them out), but I don't remember any concrete info on it other than it being something they were considering.

Seriously, you've got to lighten up a bit. Find some joy in all of this. There's plenty to be found. This whole project is for entertainment and enjoyment, after all.

How exactly is it cheating if everyone has the same options? This isn't call of duty... This is an open ended simulator. If I want to do trade runs in my Type 9 without the risk of being rammed by some noob then that it is my choice to use solo online.

Once again, take a look at GTAV, switching to solo and open works perfectly

but it is not realistic it is gamey and game is giving chicken out options, is breaking everything making multiplay worth less.

don't like a sitution just flip a switch, problem solved?

bad! Please delete this feature, Fronter

make the game cool

Cant see what all the fuss is over the play modes - who cares?

Isn't it suppose to be 'Blaze your own trail!'

I was a little worried about open play online, I'm not a fighter and I know I would be killed over and over again - or so I thought!

David Braben said recently (at EGX?) that it would be very unlikely if a player would meet another in a galaxy as big as ED. This cheered me up - so I will attempt online open.

I like the feeling of being out there 'alone', much the same feeling I got from original elite.

Anyway ED is designed so players can play the way they want - so lets do it - rather than saying this way or that way are better. Or more alarmingly being dictated to how I play me game!

I take it you are under 15...

Sorry to say that I'm happy with the direction that FD have chosen and the only constructive comment I can make is to suggest you read any of the many threads there are on the topic already.

+1 i too like the modes and the switching. It is 1 of the reasons I backed.

1) I. Like the idea of all online but a lot of games with them turn out in ways I personally do not like (trying to be diplomatic)... So this way allows me to play in all but if I am just not I. The mood sometimes I can drop down to solo.

2) some of my mates will only really play all online, others predominantly solo but we would all like to play together sometimes. This system uniquely allows us all to get our way.

Does it have issues? Yes, is it perfect for all? No but there is not any system that is .... But this system IS great for people!e like me.

I think a large problem. Stems from the fact that some people can't get over that this game is not at its core a competitive game so there is not no reason to get angry if someone gets a perceived advantage from trading solo.

Ultimately IMO don't let it worry you if you "get" it or not. Lots of games have mechanics that I do not like..... Like any game its about weighing up pros and con's and seeing if you can live with them.

It really gets my goat when people come in demanding changes which many of us love, changes which have been clear fro.m the get go and may have even been core reasons why we backed the KS in the 1st place. If you think a feature is a blocker to you enjoying the game then don't buy it. Simples.

yet they have 3 modes of getting rid of other players?what for?

I think they don't know how this game will be best to play so they throw in lots of modes in hope people will like one!

If I make a game i would know THIS or THAT is the best how I want people to play the game and concentrate on this instead of having 100 different modes, then all falling apart because of cheats and exploits you know :(

but they have never made an MMO they simply don't know and just trying something hoping for the best

Darn rotten thing; one keep beating on it and it keeps roaring its head.

"make the game cool".... for you or the (poor sob) one in your gunsight that really do not want to deal with those that eschew reasons and bee-line for other players just 'cause.

In any case, it's _not_ just a flip of the switch; it requires login off, doing the switch and login back on. In addition, other restrictions will be put on this as the dev progress (visit and read the DDF archives - it really is an eye opener).

Last, there is no plans to enable on-line and off-line switch, so that option is not even possible.

uhhh...it IS a game.

"Blaze your own trail" does not imply forcing others to travel on your trail... they get to "blaze their own trails" too and enjoy their gameplay in their way, not yours... and that IS cool!
