encoded farming

So i've hit a stonewall farming encoded data for engineering. Read numerous threads and watched an assload of videos. There are no more famine systems, so distribution centers are out of the question, sitting outside a station with a wake scanner doesnt yield much, scanning piles of ships only gives maybe 3 pieces of data per 20 ships scanned...
I guess the question is, what is currently the best way to farm encoded data?

Bug Killer Anaconda - gives G5 encoded and rare raw materials
Jameson' Crashed Cobra - G5 encoded (also g4 and some g3/g2)
Get allied with factions at a base and do missions that pay in G5 materials (Modified Embedded Firmware, Biotech Conductors, Exquisite Focus Crystals)
First one is encoded, the last two are manufactured.

But scanning wakes and ships at a busy station also works

Get some G5 materials then visit the material traders and trade down.

Jameson's Cobra. Station-based wake scanning works well with a little engineering. Ship scanning you can do literally all the time for zero cost. Encoded Emission USS. And lots of other options.

Oooo. Never tried that. How does it work?
I wouldn't bother, never find the payout worth the effort.

Fire recon limpets at the data points on the installation. Mostly they are marked private, so you will get a bounty from the local security (who will try and kill you) unless you know how to avoid that. Fun gameplay the first 2 or three times.

Ah, right. Cheers. Might try it just for gits and shiggles though.

I have an iCourier set up for that. Good shields, fast and agile for going around the installation. I use a size 3 recon limpet controller as they're faster to hack the node. You need to scan the hackable system, then select the sub system before sending off the limpet. Once the hack is done, you get a small bounty and system security will be alerted, which only is a problem in high security as they turn up almost immediately. Lower security offers you enough time to hack most if not all the ports on the installation. Yields a random scattering of encoded materials. Oh, and installation guns will fire on you but they are not as powerful as, say on a megaship. You can use the installation itself to hide behind so rarely more than one turret will fire at you. It's definitely more interesting than a re-log fest.

It works, seriously - check second spoiler - that's me going from 45 DWE to 100 during that CG

It's one of those things I wish I'd known about sooner when starting out, both the general SC ship scan and wake scanning on your way in and out of stations....although I'm lazy and only tend to do it on the way out when they're right in front of me. A full batch of DWEs is impressive going, that CG was a wake fest though - I thought I'd try and kill a few pirates but never really found many so scanned stuff before eventually giving in and kitted out as a miner (with all the duff kit that was available out there:) )

One of the ways fdev could provide more content would be allow for some kind of turreted scanner view so you could scan all the ships in a system as you fly, collecting data as you go - rather than being limited to the ones in front of you.

Sounds good, but you just know we'd have to throttle down before using the scanner. ;)

I use a small, fast ship equipped with a long range wake scanner at busy stations. Jameson Memorial (if elite) or Ray Gateway (can trade data on the spot) work best for me.

Do it for an hour while listening to some music and you should get a nice haul.

Similar, but I have my scanner Eng'd for Fast Scan.

If you have space, it's often worth bringing 2 recon limpets - some of the nodes have two points, and being able to hack them in parallel speeds things up a lot.

Unauthorised installations (no security response) or installations owned by Anarchy factions are obviously much more convenient to hack, as you only then need to worry about the installation's own guns.
