Exploration to me means planning, kitting out and then travelling, dealing with any problems and dangers on the way. I see ED as space exploration. Space Engine is great but it is more like a "Google Universe" ie an interactive atlas of space.

I'm inclined to agree, but Elite needs way more of the 'problems and dangers' when it comes to exploration as well.

Elite should be more "Survival" oriented exploration game.
I would love exploration to be more demanding gaming experence than just a test of endurance.

Yep, this is pretty much the standard issue with 'exploration' for many people in ED.
They actually don't want any exploration but space survial, tinkering all day with excel sheets like the space accountants they really are.
I can't be bothered with that kind of dullness.

Maybe the next version of Elite released in the distant future could use Space Engine, unless we have something better by then.

That's because Elite is about flying a spaceship. It should include spaceship flying (tinkering and repairing) mechanics.
Space Engine is perfect for those who don't want to be bothered with that kind of stuff.

Don't get me wrong, I still like to fly/maintain a space ship but for other purposes than exploration.
And the ED supercruise mode is by far the dullest mode to fly your ship, at least in my book.

Looks like they even have comets and black hole accretion discs. Elite has too, they just have been invisible since release.
