The engineer that requires mining 500 tons of ore

Selene Jean, totally worth the minimal effort. I had long mined 500+ tons long before I had the invite to see her. Spend an afternoon mining for profit and you’ll be set.

It's a preference. So, likewise.

DANGER: Anti-semantic rhetoric detected.

C’mon guys, let’s not... I read “Can’t be bothered to mine” the same as everyone else - it’s not something this person wants to do, but realizes they have to to complete the unlock.

I suspect this is someone who just wants to play pew-pew, probably gold-mined stacked missions into the billions range, hated that the whole time, unless they were 17 Draconis mission stacks, and just wants to get on with it.

That’s ok too. Frontier got paid, anything else isn’t our business. They asked, we answered. Trying to convince them the other 99% of the game is fun too is like trying to convince an aardvark to have a salad.

When OP figures out that in two hours in Hyades Sector DB-X d1-112 2 using an Anaconda or T9, he can get 200million credits and unlock both Selene and bill Turner, I think his interest in mining might perk up a bit.

The trip to see Petra Olmanova in the Asura system in the colonia bubble is a lot more pleasant imo than mining 500 tons of anything and she does armor and hull reinforcements.

I think the trick is to do it as-and-when, rather than as a single task. Do it as a single task and yes, it won’t be a great experience.

I did experiment with mining, i think i got a couple of tons of water and some mineral or metal that escapes me atm and called it a job well done. Havent felt the need to repeat it.

Have you tried the new Explodey Core thing? It’s sort of fun.

It's like people just wanted to have the goodies but put no effort into it, as already posited...

Not necessarily, I didn't unlock her either simply because I never ever mined before and it doesn't attract me in the least.
I wouldn't even know where to start or which ship to use.
Do you need a strong defensive ship or is a Dropship enough or a Cobra mk4.
With the new mining all I see is a multitude of mining equipment, lasers, blasters, prospectors, refineries, ugh, and for someone never been interested in mining like me it just seems not worth the effort.
But then again someone else thinks traveling 5000ly is a drag for unlocking an engineer while for me it's just a walk in my own backyard.

What was that David Braben quote about mining asteriods? That no one will have to do it unless FD need to get people hooked on grind to sell store trinkets? How did that go?

While core mining is great fun, the old fasioned mining can be pretty good to, if only for the mats - and there is something relaxing about mining with a laser...
I'm one of those who also had the 500 ton requirement done in normal gameplay before 'needing' the engineer unlock, well before core mining hit us.
I do appreciate that for others the prospect of mining is about as interesting as a visit to the dentist :)

Does it literally have to be ONLY ore? Does stuff from ice fields count like water and the like?
Yes it counts, and it's fine if you're just going to dump the stuff, or concentrate on high value stuff like Void Opals, but seeing you'll need 10 units of Painite to complete the unlock you will have to spend some time mining in a metallic ring anyway.
