Mining can ...

Thought I’d try the new mining stuff today ... would like to unlock Selene Jean (not for anything she does but for the next engineers in the chain ...) and figured some void opals might be nice.

Kitted my Krait MkII out with all the relevant gear, found some ice rings, located a Void Opal Hotspot ... and then it all went to **** ...

Firstly, it appears you can’t actually drop out of supercruise cleanly at the hotspots so you have to just “smash” into the rings and then fly the 50-100km you now are away from anything useful.

Once you’re there? Mechanics are screwed. Wave scanner highlighted a load of yellow/orange asteroids but NOT ONE actually had a core of anything, never mind the void opals this was apparently a “hotspot” for. Spent 3 hours searching and mining materials from anything with a medium or higher content rating.

Result?
  • Zero cores found / zero fissures detected
  • 35/500 tons mined for Ms Jean
  • No profit whatsoever
  • So frustrated with the game

I can make more money and have more fun doing basic combat missions. Heck, just running “dull” cargo delivery or passenger missions is less irritating.

Sold all the mining stuff and doubt I’m bother again. Shame, was hoping for so much more ...

Practice makes perfect can easily crack out 50-100 mill of Void opals around an hour.

Mining in general for other commodities is pretty rewarding in terms of credits and well balanced.

  • If you come in slowly at a shallow angle you won't be anywhere near that far from the ring when you drop.
  • Even in a 'hotspot' Void Opal roids are rare, otherwise profits would just be stupid. I often only find one every twenty minutes or so, but that one can net twenty million in profit... Plus of course you can't just log out and back in in the middle of an expedition, unless you can deal with the Log In Pirate.
  • VOs have nothing to do with Selene Jean. If you just want to get that unlock done, go mine Painite, then sell your mining gear, or you'll only have to go out again. :)

There are tutorials for mining. Check them out. Then you'll know what you're doing and won't be frustrated how things don't do what you want them to.

the guides on r/eliteminers on reddit are your friend

as noted, the entire hotspot is active not just the center. not all glowing rocks are core rocks, you need to learn to differentiate by appearance (this is detailed in one of the guides there)

mining is ez pz once you get the hang of it, which doesn't take long

You need to practice mate. Its easy once you get into the swing of it, and pretty much better than printing money.

At the risk of sounding flippant, practise what exactly? I can understand needing to practise the whole seismic charge placement, manoeuvring into the right positions to use the abrasion blasters, etc but I didn’t even get the RNG to be “allowed” to start practising that stuff.

Am I missing something? All I did was:

1. Probe rings
2. Fly to hot spot
3. Use pulse scanner
4. Fire prospector limpet at yellow/orange rocks
5. Discover no core, no fissures
6. Repeat steps 3 - 5

Am I missing something? Is the RNG really that harsh? Even pirate spawn rates on the old 100+ massacre missions were never this bad!!

One of the issues in the game (a major flaw imo) is that there's little to nothing in game to guide a player to doing any of this the correct way. It takes a group of people who monetize how-to videos on YT in order to complete the loop. Of course there are reddit posts and all the sub forum comments and tutorials, but in the game itself, you'd be really hard pressed to ever even get anywhere near the pipeline of core mining.

The game needs a tutorial with an AI mentor for each career choice. If you choose to mine, you should be able to initiate a mentor who can advise loadouts and give some examples of finding hotspots and how to determine the core rocks. Of course they cannot reveal everything, so just to get the player in the right direction, outfitted properly and not feeling like the last one in on the joke every time.

Watched / read various guides beforehand. Flew following a steady line of yellow/orange asteroids around the outside of the hotspot to try and avoid the centre where other folks may have been. Nothing. Not a single rock with a core. Don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t expecting to instantly make a fortune (and, tbh, I don’t need to as I already have plenty of assets) but I thought I would at least find SOMETHING in that kinda time.

Read a few more things since. As far as I can tell the only explanation is the “invisible” depletion ... I could try flying somewhere more “obscure” - assuming I can work out where that would be - but genuinely don’t see the point right now.

If you can't get the hang of course, follow the guide on there for lazer mining the double overlapping painite ring at HIP something-or-other. The Cr/Hr is similar, just more boring but probably more predictable if you're having trouble finding cores.

I guess you couldve just been really unlucky, unlikely though i think. The ‘roids with a core look markedly different and after practice you rarely have to waste a prospecting limpet.
When i first started i used to use night vision as it allowed me to see the telltale signs easier. If you are unsure if it is glowing brightly enough, it has no core. They are REALLY bright.
I normally do AX combat but if i get below half a billion creds i have a session mining and really enjoy the change of pace. Chill like a heatsink and also get ridiculously rich extremely fast.
Good luck CMDR keep at it and i am sure that soon you will be a pro👍

As others have said, it's just a matter of gaining experience - you certainly can't make more money from combat mission. For VOs, look for very bright yellow/orange medium sized asteroids that have a kind of knobbly appearance (like a walnut). I usually find my first core within 5 minutes of looking.

Technically heatsinks heat up, the ship chills.

Returning you to your normally scheduled programming.

Nah - if you take a bunch of prospectors then you should be seeing the patterns by the time you've emptied a Medium ship just by shooting the stuff that the PWS lights up. The YT tutorials can give you a shortcut but they aren't required.

Seems the OP isn't paying attention to what is happening and isn't learning anything. I guess they should head back to something less challenging*

* not that mining is challenging

(Plus - if they're doing core mining for Selene then .. they're doing it wrong ;) )

Are using a prospector limpet?
